Pokémon Sun & Moon |OT| Ultra Beasts and where to find them

Ok I arrived at the second island. Here are some first island impressions.

+POKEMON
+The whole area was well-designed with alternate routes, hidden areas, and teases that make you want to come back when you get the Tauros. There were some nice in-field gimmicks, like the Pokemon attacking you in the grass and the flying shadows on top of the mountain. It was definitely fun to explore, and I like how once you beat the Kahuna, more paths open up so you can traverse it more easily.
+Actually a bit of challenge. Teacher Emily wasn't playing. Totem Raticate was fairly strong (if you don't just nuke him with your level 20 starter), and the Kahuna having access to a Z Power could definitely catch people off guard. Still not blisteringly hard, but there are some moments where you can be taken advantage of if you're not careful.
+Pokefinder is much better here than in the demo. You can just press R at certain spots as opposed to having to go through some confirmation dance, and each spot has a series of different Pokemon so it's worthwhile to use more than once. I do wish you could share pictures on Miiverse, I don't want to save them to my SD card.
+Although the Dex is smaller than XY, there is still a lot of diversity. I didn't expect a Smeargle or Vullaby so early. I also like how patches of grass in one area can have different Pokemon. Past games did something similar to this with taller grass, but now it's much more ingrained.
+Festival Plaza is confusing, but there are some interesting shops and the missions are dumb yet addictive.
+General QoL things like remembering what moves are effective and the Pokeball button are really nice.

-I'm already missing the PSS. I have no idea if my friends are on, and communicating with random people is not as streamlined as it was before. I was getting requests to battle and trade all the time when I started XY, but here not so much.
-HP bar moves so slowly. I shouldn't be able to see each individual point tick down.
-Bring back hordes.

I will also say that the tutorials are not as long as many people claim they are. You can blaze through them pretty quickly, but the constant stream of cutscenes when you get to the city are a bit annoying. You can still head more or less straight to the marina to let you get into Route 2 though.

I'd really like to have a way of knowing which grass is different at a glance though (Tall grass was good for that, you can check the Rotomdex but (like a lot of Rotomdex stuff) its way too many button presses and only works on Pokemon you've already encountered so you have to have some idea the pokemon is on the route in the first place) and a way of knowing when I had seen / caught all pokemon on a route/patch. There's way too much random guessing.

I'm surprised people were weak on the school section

The excessive handholding is a bit much, but navigating through the school itself is fun, chilling with the trainers was great, you get WORK UP and

God I'm really tempted to buy this game. I've always liked Pokemon from a distance but haven't gotten into the ones I've tried. I last played Pokemon X and I could only put in about 6 hours before I got bored mainly because the game felt so un-modern.

I know there are a lot of changes in Sun/Moon with some saying its the best and most modern designed pokemon game to date. I'm tempted but don't want to regret my purchase...

Probably best to wait for a sale if you're unsure. The game does seem to make a lot of smart quality of life improvements, but it does depend what you found 'un-modern' in X.

GAF, which version should I buy: Sun or Moon?

Previous versions I own: Red, Yellow, Crystal, Silver, Diamond, SoulSilver, Black, and Y.

You could just wait for Pokemon Stars on the Switch if it ends up being real. In the mean time, Sun and Moon are really solid games and among the most tonally on point JRPGs of the generation. It's absolutely reverent to its atmosphere and setting.

There's so many little improvements in this game that are really awesome. Press Y shortcut for poke balls, being able to add a caught Pokemon to your full party and send a party member to the PC instead, seeing the effectiveness of moves in battle before you attack, etc. It's nice to see things like that, especially ones that weren't obviously needed before but now already feel essential.

The music is also really good (as usual).

How does the wonder trade fortune work, right when I unlocked the wonder trade I got the furtune and traded yungoos and got that bug fighting ultra beast in return. I noticed the UB pokeball and was like WTF!?

Damn I got lucky... I got a natural Pokerus. I battled some pokemons, went to the Pokemon Center and Joy told me that one of my Pokes has the rus, checked, Greninja, Silvally and my Shiny Marowak have it.

I'm so lucky!!! :D

Can you infect something to trade tonight? I'll give you a starter or Mon of your choice.

I don't understand why you guys are freaking about starter natures and such. They're not going have the right EV/IV's anyway. What's the point?

Thats because you can always breed to get the correct EV/IVs later on, but natures are something that can't be bred down. So having the correct nature from the start makes the process a whole lot easier.

Posted some mostly negative stuff earlier, now I'm ~9 hours in, have completed 3 trials, and want to post some more positive impressions:

-The trials are fantastic. I complained like just a week ago about how I was worried gamefreak could never match BW2's gyms again. The trials feel like they admitted they couldn't top BW2 and decided to go in a completely different direction and by god it's brilliant. It's like we finally have an orange islands game. I can't wait to see what the rest of the trials are.

-I complained all throughout gen 6 about difficulty. No complaints about difficulty in this game (yet), I feel like the game is actually pushing back once again, especially in the totem battles. I've had several resets/black outs at this point. Admittedly, this is with me playing with various restrictions (no items in battle, no grinding, set mode, no Z moves, no affection boosting, etc), but in gen 6 that still wasn't enough so it's an improvement as far as I'm concerned.

- HMs being replaced is a blessing and should be in all future games.

-Holy fuck Wishiwashi. I caught the first one I saw and immediately put it on my team thinking "this has to be this gen's magikarp." I was wrong. It's even better.

-This game is simultaneously super linear and really open feeling. The dumb objective marker constantly on the bottom screen and various arbitrary blockades make it feel like the most linear game in the series. But, the islands are designed in such a way that it feels like you could go a ton of ways, and when you go back to previous areas with new abilities there's a ton of shit to find. I went back to the first island after getting fly and spent like 40 minutes finding new stuff with all my new abilities.

Ayyyyyy Illma acknowledged i won the Kahuna thing without using a Z-move.

I appreciated this detail.

You CAN breed for nature if you want to with the everstone (for instance, ES'd Jolly Ditto + Destiny Knot 5IV Rowlett = Jolly Rowletts). Unless I'm misunderstanding your statement.

Yes you can breed down nature with an everstone. I would honestly tell everyone to just enjoy the game. There are ditto in the game so worry bout that stuff later. Actually try the pokemon you want to use then worry bout postgame when its time.

I agree, just enjoy the new features and new pokemon that this gen has to offer. There is a reason why GF delayed the update to PB to January: for us to enjoy S/M on its own before we get caught up the meta-game and competitive battling aspects of this new generation.

I am sure all of us who are into competitive have our own Dittos from XY/ORAS that we can transfer over to S/M when the update, so going through the meta-game now would do GF injustice if we aren't enjoying the new stuff in S/M.

It's been a while since I played Y but man the intro to this one is really slow. I don't feel like I've seen a lot of new Pokemon so far either.

So I got Moon, but it turns out Alolan Vulpix is exclusive to Sun. Anyone willing to trade me a female one?

I just barely finished the trainer school, so apologies in advance-- I don't really have anything good to offer unfortunately.

I don't know if this was addresed already but I picked up Moon and it's currently 1:25 am, so isn't it supposed to be daytime on the game according to Nintendo with the 12 hour shift?

I haven't followed closely the released since I didn't want to get too spoiled, so maybe I misinterpreted.

So many hours trying to get a Modest Popplio.

Not sure if I should just call it quits and keep this Timid female Popplio.

I hate myself.

I gave up after a few dozen tries. That cutscene was pretty ridiculous.

It was hard enough getting them to be female, so I settled soon as I got a calm one.

I spent 9 hours and 45mins on the first island just hunting methodically for every Pokemon I could find.

This game is fantastic, and there was a scene in the cemetery too if you go back later, damn this dialogue is great and heavy too.

Uh, I got into a trainer battle using a gastly and it mean looked my munchlax. Neither can damage the other party. What to do?

Keep using moves until one of you run out of all your PP, at which point the one without PP will struggle and that does damage regardless of type.
