I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

People love games like uncharted. Fancy Resturant.
Mainly cause they don't make games like uncharted.
There's a bunch of multiplayer shooters. It's fast food.

Shouldn't titanfall of cleaned up in 2013 then? Because that game got railed on for being incredible but not having enough. So I'd have to disagree entirely.
2014 but yes, It should have. It was the best game in 2014.

anyone who disagrees is wrong :P

I mean, Overwatch already super popular and making all the money, does Blizzard really need 1 more GOTY?
Everyone is making multiplayer focus game/game as service but single player only narrative game is dying.
Why not use this opportunity to encourage publisher to make more single player game? It can raise awareness.
After demon soul or walking dead win some GOTY, soul genre and telltale series get more popular, gaming get more diverse since.

Do you think that GAF goty has that much weight?

Maybe they will stick an epic single player campaign in Overwatch in the next week or two. Maybe then it will be award worthy and I'll finally look at it.

More like it shows how silly the premise of a single definitive "GOTY" in this industry is.

Instead we are prematurely salty on what a PR show does inbetween it's trailers and reveals.

and another thread where people voice their opinions as a fact.

Uncharted is overrated, Overwatch is overrated, Game X is overrated......

Uncharted aswell Overwatch are among the highest rated games in 2016 - and obviously many people had fun with these game.

on what basis is a game even overrated?

Just because you didn't like it? Is your opinion more worth than the opinion of people who loved these games?

Overwatch should probably win.

Uncharted 4 is great, but it's safe and doesn't really do anything new or interesting (beyond the jaw-dropping technical accomplishments).

I was so bored with DOOM that I quit like 2 hours in. I just don't see what everyone is gushing over.

I haven't played Titanfall 2 or Inside.

I've played almost every one of the legit contenders besides Uncharted 4 and will have played it by the time the games season rolls around

I say titanfall 2 is the best game I've played this year, and I'm a huge Souls fan that platinumed Dark Souls 3.

Awesome Single Player, Memorable missions, fun gameplay mechanics and one of the best multiplayer games of the year.

I couldn't really get into Doom, and Overwatch is just a bunch of console players finally learning about Team Fortress 2 style games.

as awesome as UC4 is I feel there's several games that deserve GOTY over Uncharted 4 and yet I'm fully expecting...

"Our game of the year 2016 is... Uncharted 4!"

i'll be pleasantly surprised if it's not but I'm holding my breath. You think it's a tragedy that Overwatch might not get the nods it deserves? I feel the same way about the amazing games that Firaxis put out this year.

That's not really fair. Someone is stupid because they don't share the same opinion you do on how games should be judged. Yes, value matters. Since I'm more of a single player guy and play a lot less competitive games than I did 5+yrs ago, I'm obviously going to look at stuff like Overwatch, the original Titanfall, and the like differently than single player games.(especially single player games that offer multiplayer/co op)
No, someone is stupid because they have a stupid opinion.

Modes are a dumb way to judge games and a terrible way of evaluating worth. Two of the best games this year, The Witness and Inside have only one mode. I'm not throwing them out in favor of some other game just because they don't have an extra mode.

I'd say snubbing comedies is a more recent trend isn't it? I feel like until at least the 70s off the top of my head comedies did pretty well. But I also don't think that comedies are as good as they used to be on the whole.

From Google:

It has been rare that light comedy films win the Best Picture Oscar. The following have been the only 'comedies' that have won Best Picture: It Happened One Night (1934), You Can't Take It With You (1938), the musical comedy Going My Way (1944), Tom Jones (1963), The Sting (1973), and Annie Hall (1977).

So you're right that it's been a bigger problem the past 3 decades or so, but it was always extremely rare for a comedy to win.

I think the best MP game of the year is obviously Over
cooked
.

For GOTY i'd vote for INSIDE, wonderful game.

Pro-tip: it's an opinion even when people don't write "I think" or "in my opinion".

Especially "X is overrated" cannot not be an opinion. It literally means "I don't think as highly of X as the critical consensus".

Overwatch is easily my GOTY. Would be a shame if Uncharted 4 won. It wasn't anything special. All of the other nominees are more deserving in my eyes.

I think Uncharted 4 is great(story and MP as well) and it's my GOTY, but Overwatch winning would be very cool. It's just such an odd game to win GOTY. It would get attention from those that dismissed it because it's MP only.
Overwatch will definitely win somewhere.

And I'm outta here. These threads always get ugly.

I guess everyone needs to add an IMHO at every post now.

I would definitely agree. Uncharted 4 is kind of a disappointment anyway for its series. I previously said during Overwatch's beta that I wouldn't buy it for full price because of how barebones it was, but I got it anyway and I regret nothing. Unlike Joke Fighter V, Overwatch manages to be a hell of a lot more fun and addicting to play even with the lack on content on launch. For a new IP, it's widely successful, and I think that accounts for much more.

Judging content in a MP game seems weird to me. I've played like 2400 hours of Dota on one map in one mode. I continue to play because it's fun and I like getting better, which I assume is why most people play competitive MP

I mean, Overwatch doesn't really seem that new or interesting either. Just does what it does quite well. I think Uncharted is possibly more unique in that it blends genres in a way that's very rarely seen.

Uncharted was good but it's definitely not one of my best games this year. I enjoyed Ratchet & Clank, Overwatch, and Battlefield 1 more.

Absolutely agreed, but I also love Bloodborne and can see why some people would prefer it over The Witcher 3. However, what I don't understand is why some people act like it was an outrageous call. Both games are close enough that awarding either is not wrong in any universe although I think TW3 is a better game than Bloodborne and a much better game than Uncharted 4 for that matter. Any of them winning anything is not wrong because they're all very very good anyway and that's like opinions man.

This is not DA:I winning over Bayonetta 2, now that was a flat out robbery.

Let's not pretend that Witcher 3 wining over BB is different from DA:I winning over Bayonetta 2

just look at this

http://gotypicks.blogspot.com/

It's always the mainstream and popular game wins and usually on the most popular system(explains why no Nintendo game is dominating any year)

Not saying that Witcher 3 is as bad as DA:I of course lol.

Really? I'm predominately a single-player gamer, and I'd say it was the other way around. With a single-player game, you play through the campaign, which is tailor-made to make you feel like the most important person in the universe, with all these spectacular set-pieces happening around you, then when the credits roll, you move onto the next one. With online multiplayer games (and especially something like Overwatch) you really have to spend time understanding the mechanics, and accept that you're going to have hundreds of humbling deaths before you get the hang of it.

there were enough threads about this the past days where people were trying to sell it as a fact that Game X is shit, overrated.

Hoo boy, that pre-emptive UC4 GOTY salt. I know it infuriates certain Neogaf members to see the game get the praise it deserves, but starting a thread to stamp your feet about the mere possibility it might be named GOTY instead of your favourite game is downright embarassing.

You think Overwatch deserves recognition as GOTY? Fair enough, but I can't see any reason for UC4 to be in the thread title if that was really your intent with this thread in all honesty.

When/if UC4 does clean up them GOTYs though, I'm fully expecting some hilarious nuclear meltdowns from some of you. So don't blow your load too early guys, save some for the main event in a few weeks :)

I feel like there was an interesting thread here about multiplayer vs single-player games when it comes to GOTY, but it's being lost in the "I liked this game more than that game." "Oh yeah? Well I liked that game more than this game!" arguments.

Anyways, I actually think Overwatch has a decent chance at GOTY. Seems to have stayed relevant throughout the year, and gets a ton of love from its fanbase. And after Splatoon and Rocket League, I think critics may be more open to naming a multiplayer game the GOTY.

I know it might not be a popular opinion but I think OverWatch trailers are way better than OverWatch itself.

That's funny because it's another aspect of the game that mirrors Team Fortress 2. I never got around to actually playing that game, but the "Meet the Team" promo skits were amazing.

That's my opinion as well, so I guess we're unpopular. :) I'm still holding out hope that the game/franchise gets some good SP content.

The lore and characters in OW are so good that I really think it'd be a shame if Blizzard never does anything SP-related with the series.

It's weird to care so much about the awards aspect of the game awards not gonna lie.

If it's your GOTY, it's your GOTY. Lord knows blizzard has got the recognition it deserves for this game.

Um...given that they're both single player games, I wouldn't throw them out either. I'm throwing out games like Overwatch and the original Titanfall for being multiplayer only games. Again, it's beyond silly that you feel someone is stupid because they don't share the same opinion. Opinions aren't stupid just because you disagree. That's about as retarded as one can get. Take care

Doom and INSIDE are my games of the year

Overwatch is a Team a Fortress 2 clone

Uncharted 4 was just more Uncharted

What a lazy post, lol.

Just no to what you said about Uncharted and Overwatch. Overwatch does many things differently than TF2 from my experience. You can just throw that statement out there like that.

Uncharted 4 has been the biggest departure from other Uncharted games in terms of music, tone, and pacing, and humor. It has significantly better gameplay mechanics and controls than any other game in the series and arguably has some of the best gun play and controls in the TPS market next to MGS V.

Try actually playing the games next time and you wouldn't be saying this.
