I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

I think the fact that Overwatch is a Blizzard title will help it a lot when GOTYs start getting handed out. I mean, Rocket League did shockingly well during last year's award season and it's developer didn't also have some huge, prestigious pedigree.

Well said, I stopped caring when GOTY awards failed to recognize Bloodborne last year.

I don't feel like either UC4 or OW deserves GOTY, but I won't be the one to decide.

But The Witcher 3 was the better game =3

They got it right on the whole.

There is more content in Uncharted 4 than in Overwatch, thats a fact, thus making Uncharted 4 the reasonable contender for the 2016 GOTY

Content is not an indicator of quality and it never will be. Value for money, definitely, but not quality.

I disagree that $40-$60 multiplayer only games should win GOTY. Blizzard has shown their vision for the future with stuff like Hearthstone and Overwatch, and that vision would include less and less single player experiences. I do think something like Titanfall 2 or DOOM that offer a number of modes, single player and multiplayer, should win GOTY. Naughty Dog put everything into Uncharted 4, and it seems the most likely.
Judging games by the number of modes in them seems like a pant-on-head-stupid way to go about things.

I don't understand why either one is on the list when there are much better games that didn't get picked.

The witness comes to mind.

Overwatch is solid but shallow as hell content wise. Two maps and two characters in over 6 months?? What the hell? They sure are hell make sure those loot boxes are ready to go though, would be nice if they put that type of commitment into new maps and characters.

Uncharted is a good game but it's no where near 2 and 3.

And if doom doesn't win, I'll riot in my living room and throw Jell-O everywhere.

Fast forward to 2014 to the first annual Game Awards. Dragon Age Inquisition (jesus christ) wins over Destiny and Super Smash Brothers Wii U. That was just a bad year for gaming.

And you know I would have that exact same reaction if Overwatch wins this year. (And I kind of liked Overwatch for the week it resonated with me)

They got it right on the whole.

Ha-ha-ha, no.

MGSV should have been GOTY. Pure gameplay heaven. Don't like online multiplayer games and I'm sure a good percentage of people never care about them. That's why Overwatch probably won't win this year.

I am a sp gamer most of the time, but this year, my goty goes to OW.
Great game from the start. But the thing that made it even better is the support from Blizzard. New characters (Ana and Sombra), new maps (Eichenwalde, Eco Point Antarctica, Oasis next month), new modes (Revenge of Junkenstein, arcade), the rework of Symmetra.

It is difficult for me to see all the changes they've done and not think it's my goty.

My vote's for DOOM...

... But I have to admit, Overwatch has made the biggest impact this year and possibly for many years. It's become a phenomenon.

The "Overwatch is overrated" backlash was inevitable, and it's not even remotely my favorite game, but I still see it resonating with people like few games released this year.

HAHAHAHA. No. Quantum Break deserves game of the year easily.

what no.

Quantum break is good and highly polished, but its game design is right out the mid 2000's it doesn't feel like its pushing the medium at all.

again uncharted 4 is highly polished and well made but it doesn't feel fresh the gameplay took a back seat and while its a lot better than its predecessor it isn't as enjoyable (to me) as Doom or Overwatch or Thumper or titanfall. I could put so many more games in front on uncharted 4 and QB this year.

overwatch is very good and very polished but I can't see it as GOTY. This year isn't like 2014 where nothing was really that good so Shadow of Mordor won a few gongs

Inside, Titanfall 2, Uncharted 4, Battlefield 1, show we had some very strong releases.

Personally, I'd go for Inside.

While I enjoyed overwatch, uncharted 4, doom, battlefield 1, and titanfall 2 I just kinda feel like none of these games deserve GOTY. I can't really think of a game so far this year that made me feel like "WHOAH... THIS GAME IS INSANE" like witcher 3 or Last of Us or GTA 5 did.

That said they were all good games so I wouldn't really have a problem with any of them winning.

My feelings exactly.

Love Doom. Like Uncharted 4. Love Dark Souls 3. Live Dishonored 2. I hate multiplayer games as a rule. I bought Battlefield 4 and never touched the multi.

I fucking LOVE Overwatch. It has converted me. If it got GotY I would just nod and say "damn right."

No mentions of Dishonored 2? Game is really surpassing my expectations on nearly every front
except PC performance.

edit: beaten

Uncharted 4 is a chore to play. Even hardcore apologists will admit the platforming sections were just boring and clear padding to the game's length. The whole experience could have been a lot tighter, because a whole half of that game is uneventful.

And who is this based on? Again. It's contender for GOTY is reflected in its reviews, sales and acclaim. Every game up there deserves GOTY. Didn't feel like a chore to me at all.

Content is not an indicator of quality and it never will be. Value for money, definitely, but not quality.

Shouldn't titanfall of cleaned up in 2013 then? Because that game got railed on for being incredible but not having enough. So I'd have to disagree entirely.

Not with that trash open world and mission design.

Absolutely agreed, but I also love Bloodborne and can see why some people would prefer it over The Witcher 3. However, what I don't understand is why some people act like it was an outrageous call. Both games are close enough that awarding either is not wrong in any universe although I think TW3 is a better game than Bloodborne and a much better game than Uncharted 4 for that matter. Any of them winning anything is not wrong because they're all very very good anyway and that's like opinions man.

This is not DA:I winning over Bayonetta 2, now that was a flat out robbery.

How people can still be playing and enjoying those same levels over and over again I don't know but I've never really got into the competitive side of gaming. It was good fun for me for a few weeks

Judging games by the number of modes in them seems like a pant-on-head-stupid way to go about things.

That's not really fair. Someone is stupid because they don't share the same opinion you do on how games should be judged. Yes, value matters. Since I'm more of a single player guy and play a lot less competitive games than I did 5+yrs ago, I'm obviously going to look at stuff like Overwatch, the original Titanfall, and the like differently than single player games.(especially single player games that offer multiplayer/co op)

Overwatch is way to shallow in terms of gameplay mechanics and content to be my GOTY.

I enjoy playing it, esp. with friends, but after ~1 hour it just becomes kinda boring to play.

I only played the beta and it was alright but I never bought it. My vote is going to Titanfall 2 this year. UC4 was great but never got into the MP.

The Academy historically favors super pretentious expressions of serious business art-as-movie, so comedies don't win Best Picture. Somewhat similarly, I imagine game journalists are eager to promote games as important works instead of spectacularly fun entertainment with friends, so traditionally you need something single player and narrative-driven.

I'd say snubbing comedies is a more recent trend isn't it? I feel like until at least the 70s off the top of my head comedies did pretty well. But I also don't think that comedies are as good as they used to be on the whole.

I think quality of content is one thing, but value has to also be part of the equation. Overwatch doesn't deserve to win GoTY for the same reasons that SFV shouldn't win it.

why do people think this game should be GOTY? besides opinions, cause we can all disagree or agree in different thingsm but the game being only mp, too casual among other things, i just dont see it.

Haven't really played anything this year that screams "man this deserves GOTY" to me like some past years that had games like Splatoon or The Last of Us. Judging from past games personally wouldn't rate Uncharted 4 over Overwatch even if I haven't played it. I'm sure Uncharted 4 will be this year's GOTY of choice all across the spectrum.

:/

Witness is so incredibly well designed. I mean, just think of the craftsmanship behind making a puzzle game based on one concept, and then seeing that concept creatively pushed in all kinds of twists and turns. The world is hauntingly beautiful, and the discoveries you make are so natural and satisfying to find...

how a game so well crafted like that doesnt get GOTY nomination sucks. We have the big games like Uncharted and Overwatch which I find to be great games, but nowhere near GOTY quality because they play off of typical trope designs (Hero shooter that lifts off of TF2, and refined TPS that has done it all before and tries to mimic the storytelling of a predecessor IP but falls short).

The Witness just isnt popular enough or has crazy ass cosplay fanbase to get the recognition it deserves, but everything about that game feels so special for this industry.

Sorry for going off topic :P
I 100% agree. The Witness is easily my GOTY and one of my favourite games from the last 5 years. I'm waiting to replay it in the hope that I'll forget how to solve some (many?) of the puzzles.

If we are going by overall gameplay? Yea, Overwatch and many other games this year just beats out UC4. UC4 has the same gameplay structure and cinematics it had years before it. OW and DOOM add so much to the gameplay that it's just more fun to play. So yea, I agree with the OP.

After 800 hours on Overwatch I can say that the 40€ for a multiplayer online only game were a worthwhile investment. My GotY for sure.

I mean, Overwatch already super popular and making all the money, does Blizzard really need 1 more GOTY?
Everyone is making multiplayer focus game/game as service but single player only narrative game is dying.
Why not use this opportunity to encourage publisher to make more single player game? It can raise awareness.
After demon soul or walking dead win some GOTY, soul genre and telltale series get more popular, gaming get more diverse since.
