I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

None of the games listed are RimWorld, Farming Simulator 17, or Stephen's Sausage Roll.

So none of them will be my GOTY.

Though if I did have to pick an "NPD" candidate, it would be Hitman.

Overwatch will probably win as many GOTY awards if not more than Uncharted.

If we are talking about the games award show... Who cares really. It's not like they are the only award or that they do anything (other than the show itself) to be more worth it than the other awards.

Doom deserves it more. And Dark Souls 3 is better than all of them

Good lord, had no idea that there was so much UC4 hate on GAF. Wtf people? Have the complainers played? It's not revolutionary by any stretch but it is the best of what it is.

Overwatch as GOTY? I agree with a lot of other people here saying DOOM is the actual GOTY. I get it that a lot of people who never played shooters like it a lot but there are just as many people who do love shooters that don't really like it. If any shooter takes the GOTY though I'm really pulling for DOOM. Amazing game on so many levels.

I'm not sure "hate" is the right word since graphics and core gunplay have been positively received, it's the pacing, tone and writing that have drawn a lot of criticism. I personally feel that ND didn't do enough to evolve the formula and doubled down more on some of the worst aspects of the series.

Let my friend borrow Overwatch, forgot that even existed till this thread. Polished game with some interesting heroes but some terrible map designs and it gets really boring really fast.

Mine would be Civ 6 or HoI4. If I were to pick a game that Jeff Gerstman has heard of it would be a tossup between Doom or Overwatch.

I just want Uncharted 4 to win because it'll really annoy the group of people who show up in every Uncharted 4 thread just to say it's an awful game. Think overall this year has been pretty mediocre though outside of a couple of games (Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls 3, and even they were slightly disappointing), so I couldn't really care what wins.

Thought Overwatch was really boring (only played a little though and I'm not really a MP guy) and Doom just reeks of Wolfenstein and the Gaf hype for that was way different to how I felt about it, so haven't got it yet.

Overwatch is amazing! I think they'll give it the GOTY award.

But I'd choose Uncharted 4 over it. Uncharted 4 is one of the best games I've ever played.

Uncharted is a bland and boring mess of a game with horrible pacing. Should've never be nominated nevermind winning.

The Witness is the clear GoTY (so far) but i'm fine with either Doom or Overwatch.

(or DS3)

OW is a good base for the game.

However it still needs basic features such as a minimap, avatars with ult indicators, huge balance changes to must-pick heroes (Like Reinheart) and generally more content. Half of the games just end up in the storm without any kind of structure, just a swing of momentum.

The support was also poor for the game which highlighted the free post-launch support as the selling point.

GOTY should be reserved for games which deliver on all cylinders.

It's not like critics have something against giving awards to multiplayer games. You just need to remember back to 2013 and 2014 where the industry couldn't stop tripping over themselves to tell you how amazing Titanfall and Evolve were going to be. They basically scooped up every pre-release award imaginable.

You guys are nuts. Obvs. GOTY is Another Metroid 2 Remake
Ok, no more plugging.

Overwatch is real fun though. Most AAA games bore me to tears, but Overwatch is great.

Amazes me how passionately some people dislike Uncharted 4. Overwatch would, of course, be a deserving winner as well -- but U4 was an incredible game.

I don't think is dislike is just a bit "more of the same" at this point, I liked UC4 but I it doesn't feel fresh like 1 or 2.

GOTY awards are almost universally given to story heavy SP games, at least for stuff like the game awards.

Man, you know a GOTY list is good when you would not be disappointed with any of the options winning. Could've had 10 GOTY choices this year, easy.

I'll tell you the secret to your matchmaking issues: You aren't great at the game yet. And neither are most of the people who you end up matched with. So when someone on your team or the other team messes up spectacularly it ends with the other team who did not mess up so badly rolling you. And then you move on to the next game and repeat the "Who can make the bigger mistake" cycle. Once you really get your feet into the ground those one-sided games disappear for the most part and it becomes less about not making mistakes and more about making great plays.

Its doesn't matter what my skill level is in this game if i don't get to play with other people of or at least around the same skill level. I read the official Blizzard thread on how matching making works for Overwatch and the fact that it's doesn't take into account the player's level is a grave error (imo). A player's level may not be a direct indicator of skill, but it is an indicator of experience. A team with an average team level of 20, shouldn't be going against teams with an average of 80. That's the difference between a team that changes chars to counter the team their playing vs a team of DPS and a Mercy (Me).

That not going to be fun for anyone involved and that has been my experience playing ever since the free weekend ended.

Games of people getting steam rolled shouldn't be the normal. It's not going to teach me to be better, it just discouraging (and boring from the winning side.)

Overwatch is the real GAME of the year. I liked UC4 but the gameplay wasn't there. IMO it's Overwatch, then Titanfall 2.

I genuinely think that multiplayer competitive gaming and story based narrative gaming are so different that they can't be compared properly as is typical for works of art in the same medium.

It would be like comparing the new version of Risk (a board game) to a sci-fi novel, or something. The quality of one is almost entirely based upon its rules and balance (gameplay), the other is dependent on having top quality storytelling and presentation. Where's the common ground where you can compare? It seems futile.

I've long thought that for many games, the campaign and multiplayer should be reviewed separately so this is just an extension of that.

Uncharted shouldn't even be a nomination. Uncharted 2? Sure. But 4 is not an amazing game.

Agreed with this.

I think it should be Titanfall 2 to win GOTY. Haven't played enough Overwatch (just the beta) to say if it should or shouldn't win.

But Uncharted 4 definitely should not win.

Because you're saying a cinematic AAA game with great graphics is an example of why games matter. When gameplay is what you should be pointing towards.
You may have misunderstood me but I'm against the same thing, but the majority of the people who post here, the people who review games, the people who buy games tend to think that way.

People are going to be surprised when doom and Titanfall 2 lose to something like UC4, I hope they don't, but there's no giraffe scenes in those games ya know

For me, Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 to a certain extent, had great pacing.

Uncharted 4 was plagued with pacing issues and made the gaming experience extremely off-putting.

I can't understand how Overwatch can be anyone's GOTY.
The game and chars are nice but the matchmaking is so bad.

I've never played an online game with such lopsided matches in both directions so consistently.

At 14 hours in, I'm at the point i'm starting to regret my purchase.

I don't think this is caused by matchmaking - it is caused by the game mechanics. Overwatch is, from a strategic point of view, far more complex than most shooters, and far more similar to MOBAs, where you absolutely get these very lopsided games, particularly at low ranks.

Less experienced and less skilled players are very hard to predict. They don't know the best way to play, nor which characters to use when, nor how to deal with other characters. It's not unusual to have a teammate that is completely useless for a round only to become brilliant the next. Hell, I still occasionally have games where I may as well not be there. They can be a useful teammate one round and a complete waste of space the next. I have, quite a few times now, experienced teams that seemed completely useless one round suddenly become incredibly effective the next. I recently played a Competitive Temple of Anubis game which stretched to six rounds because both teams were good at attacking and both teams were bad at defending. This is a bizarre case where we played six lopsided rounds because the teams were actually quite evenly matched.

Could Overwatch's matchmaking be better? I'm sure it could... but in a game like Overwatch it is incredibly hard to predict how good an individual will be, let alone a team, let alone a specific team against another specific team.

Lopsided games can be irritating. Horrible to be on the losing side, sometimes a bit boring to be on the winning side. Yet, I think they are a consequence of what makes Overwatch so exciting. Plus, for what it's worth, you will find that, as you play more, and as you get better, this issue decreases, and you will get more even matches more frequently.

RimWorld is great, but it isn't a final product. Early access-style games are left out of GOTY discussion for that very reason.

The Witness is easily GOTY, I'll agree with you there.

Uncharted 4 is brilliant though. It's an underrated game. My #2, unless Dark Souls 3 gets better in the last third of the game (currently playing)
