I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

Don't worry about it OP, there's a very strong anti-Sony sentiment in the gaming industry right now so there's no chance of UC4 winning c.f. the Bloodborne and Witcher 3 farce last year.

I don't think Uncharted deserves GOTY. Overwatch is in my top top 5, higher than Uncharted but not GOTY.

This year has been pretty weak for gaming overall. Feels like my GOTY will be something I enjoyed but not loved and became a classic.

I mean, Overwatch doesn't really seem that new or interesting either. Just does what it does quite well. I think Uncharted is possibly more unique in that it blends genres in a way that's very rarely seen.
I think "hero shooters" or whatever you want to call them are still pretty fresh. Sure, Team Fortress exists, but Overwatch is pretty different from it and it's not like TF2 is even an option on consoles.

OP UC4 is the most disliked in the series from everywhere I look on Gaf. I dunno how much that counts everywhere else but I'm sure it's carried through.

Overwatch will win, the fan base it's created in less than a year is massive.

You think Overwatch deserves recognition as GOTY? Fair enough, but I can't see any reason for UC4 to be in the thread title if that was really your intent with this thread in all honesty.

When/if UC4 does clean up them GOTYs though, I'm fully expecting some hilarious nuclear meltdowns from some of you. So don't blow your load too early guys, save some for the main event in a few weeks :)

Are you the new Majestad?

I can't understand how Overwatch can be anyone's GOTY.
The game and chars are nice but the matchmaking is so bad.

I've never played an online game with such lopsided matches in both directions so consistently.

At 14 hours in, I'm at the point i'm starting to regret my purchase.

I loved Uncharted 4, but it sure was antiquated in a lot of ways! I'd much rather see Overwatch celebrated, and I don't even play it. It's clearly made a lot of people happy, and - much like Splatoon last year - further opened up the multiplayer FPS space, which deserves nothing but the highest of praise.

Personally, I'm all about The Witness and DOOM.

Honestly UC4 seems like it was forgotten for a ND game. I never hear about it as much anymore, while i hear plenty about Doom and Overwatch still. Feels like UC4 is on there by assumption.

Good lord, had no idea that there was so much UC4 hate on GAF. Wtf people? Have the complainers played? It's not revolutionary by any stretch but it is the best of what it is.

Overwatch as GOTY? I agree with a lot of other people here saying DOOM is the actual GOTY. I get it that a lot of people who never played shooters like it a lot but there are just as many people who do love shooters that don't really like it. If any shooter takes the GOTY though I'm really pulling for DOOM. Amazing game on so many levels.

Hoo boy, that pre-emptive UC4 GOTY salt. I know it infuriates certain Neogaf members to see the game get the praise it deserves, but starting a thread to stamp your feet about the mere possibility it might be named GOTY instead of your favourite game is downright embarassing.

I tried to come up with a response to this post but I just sat at my computer staring at the words for a long time.

I'll tell you the secret to your matchmaking issues: You aren't great at the game yet. And neither are most of the people who you end up matched with. So when someone on your team or the other team messes up spectacularly it ends with the other team who did not mess up so badly rolling you. And then you move on to the next game and repeat the "Who can make the bigger mistake" cycle. Once you really get your feet into the ground those one-sided games disappear for the most part and it becomes less about not making mistakes and more about making great plays.

I feel like there was an interesting thread here about multiplayer vs single-player games when it comes to GOTY, but it's being lost in the "I liked this game more than that game." "Oh yeah? Well I liked that game more than this game!" arguments.

Anyways, I actually think Overwatch has a decent chance at GOTY. Seems to have stayed relevant throughout the year, and gets a ton of love from its fanbase. And after Splatoon and Rocket League, I think critics may be more open to naming a multiplayer game the GOTY.

I felt like that was inevitable when I made this post but I had hope. I had hope...

A western shooter deserves GOTY over another western shooter. But wait there's another really good western shooter that could cause an upset.

We put so much importance on the opinion of outlets and audiences that heavily favor western RPGs and western shootbang no matter how lackluster they are. This is what I learned after Inquizzzition and Mordor swept.

Is the game really that amazing? I played a few hours on the PC version and while fun I wasn't exactly blown away by it.

I agree, Bayonetta 2 was a much better game than Mordor

Um...given that they're both single player games, I wouldn't throw them out either. I'm throwing out games like Overwatch and the original Titanfall for being multiplayer only games. Again, it's beyond silly that you feel someone is stupid because they don't share the same opinion. Opinions aren't stupid just because you disagree. That's about as retarded as one can get. Take care
So singleplayer only games get a pass, but not multiplayer only games. That makes no sense. One could easily argue that the multiplayer games have equal or more amounts of value than the singleplayer games you're refusing to throw out.

Opinions aren't a golden horse that has to be respected. You have a right to your opinion, and I have a right to think that it's pants-on-head stupid.

Overwatch is great but my experience with it varies depending on who I'm playing with. That's why single-player focused games have traditionally won GOTY - it is about the consistency of the experience.

I'd put Uncharted 4, Doom, Titanfall 2, and XCOM 2 all ahead of Overwatch this year personally.

Let's not pretend that Witcher 3 wining over BB is different from DA:I winning over Bayonetta 2

just look at this

http://gotypicks.blogspot.com/

It's always the mainstream and popular game wins and usually on the most popular system(explains why no Nintendo game is dominating any year)

Not saying that Witcher 3 is as bad as DA:I of course lol.

It is IMO because they're both fantastic games. It's closer to splitting hairs between them, depending on what kind of game you prefer you're going to enjoy one more than the other. And both are on the PS4, which is the dominant gaming platform currently. Bayonetta 2 is a absolutely ridiculously better game than DA:I to the point where it's very plausible to guess it only lost because it's on the Wii U.

That's flat out Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan levels of what the fuckery.

Is overwatches multiplayer such leaps and bounds over U4, Doom, and Titanfall 2's combined single player and multiplayer to win goty? That's really the question you need to ask yourself if you want to give Overwatch GotY.

I liked Uncharted 4 alot, but outside of the incredible visuals, performances its nothing super amazing. Just a really good shooter.

Not saying that Overwatch deserves to win over it, but thats just my feelings towards U4 as a game.

Amazes me how passionately some people dislike Uncharted 4. Overwatch would, of course, be a deserving winner as well -- but U4 was an incredible game.

It wouldn't win in the FPS category let alone GOTY.
I understand people really like it but that's not how it works

Yeah, this is a flaw. It's not like other games where a single player can change the course of a game - if you're not attacking as a team, and each player is just trickling in, you're going to lose 100% of the time. I'm not sure what the solution is, whether education will fix it, or Blizzard need to change something mechanically (maybe some synchronised respawn timers?), but it's a problem. It's absurd when your only chance to win is for the entire team to get wiped out in one go, so you can go back to being in sync and all attacking at the same time.

You can't show overwatch to people who don't play video games and say "you see video games can be important too!"

You can with uc4 tho

Guess who wins

Sheesh. Who's stamping their feet? A handful of users saying they didn't like UC4 as much warrants this kind response from you then?
You're the only one likely to have a meltdown, judging from this post.

The goty award means nothing and is a farce, but if we're considering what the best game released in 2016 is, I think we can do better than U4 or Overwatch.

and another thread where people voice their opinions as a fact.

Uncharted is overrated, Overwatch is overrated, Game X is overrated......

Uncharted aswell Overwatch are among the highest rated games in 2016 - and obviously many people had fun with these game.

on what basis is a game even overrated?

Just because you didn't like it? Is your opinion more worth than the opinion of people who loved these games?

Agreed. This thread is silly and embarrassing.

Despite my interest in continuing play being very minimal right now, I agree. I've played Overwatch in 2016 probably at least twice as much as the next game in the list so far. That isn't to say that length actually equates to better quality or value necessarily, but so much of that time spent was very high bar stuff for me.

It's definitely a contender in my eyes, and I have surely enjoyed it more than my overall takeaway from Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4 is fine, but outside of the graphics and a pretty good story setting a good hook, the actual act of playing that game didn't feel exceptional, IMO. It had me playing a little too much, and that's something I don't say often -- but the level of variety in the actual gameplay seemed to run very dull about 3 hours before I finished the game. I simply got tired of climbing in particular, but the shooting sections with their super scrappy, improvisational nature kind of got samesy and dull for me, too. I'll admit that improvised feeling to the combat is pretty unique to Uncharted but I feel like it's so rewarding of almost every reasonable player action that nothing feels extremely satisfying.

I love Naughty Dog and the Uncharted franchise and still felt Uncharted 4 was easily worth my time, but when it comes to games that actually felt fun to play this year, it gets outclassed by Overwatch, Doom, and Dark Souls III. I'm currently very, very pleased with Titanfall 2 from both single player and multiplayer perspectives as well, and it's become my second-ever Platinum trophy, so it's going to be up there in my consideration.

Been a great year for games, IMO. Not feeling quite as awestruck as I was by Bloodborne and Witcher III last year, but it's still been quite exceptional... I just don't think Uncharted 4 ended up leaving a GOTY contender impression on me.

I think Overwatch would be more than an acceptable choice. Great game, amazing substance, presentation and polish. Clearly well cared for by the developers.

I really hated the shooting mechanics in Shadows of Mordor as well. And all the RPG elements.

This thread is a pretty sad showing for the most part. Almost every post here is either some garbage "Nuh-uh that game suxx my gam is best" or "the only reason that game would win is because -insert critique of industry here-". I'm vaguely surprised some of the people in this thread can even manage to string some words together and have it come out as legible.

More on topic, Overwatch has been a blast to play. I've managed to find time to put around 150 hours into the game since Day 1 and I still find myself enjoying my time. UC4 did some amazing things with graphics and the gameplay was very fun, but I think anyone who thought the pacing and actual delivery of the plot were memorable need to go back and play it again. DOOM has some of the greatest if not best gunplay I have ever felt in a game, but that's about it (not saying that along isn't significant enough to put it in the contention for GotY). I ran through it once and had no desire to really do it again despite enjoying my time with it.

Past all that though, I felt Titanfall 2 played just as, if not better, than Doom. It was by and far the greatest feeling game of the year barring whenever I had to look at server populations. Fast-paced, vertical, and rewarding of both skill and teamplay depending on the mode. Stardew Valley was also an excellent game - developed in full by a single person. Almost no praise whatsoever has been said for it in this thread. People should stop looking at GotY awards as anything actually indicative of quality and look at them for what they are - a measure of financial and cultural success that a game has weighted to critical praise.

And I think Inside deserves GOTY over Overwatch and Uncharted, but it's historically unlikely. The last time (only other time?) an artsy indie game was nominated for GOTY was Journey in 2012 and it lost to fucking Walking Dead (which was an admittedly unusual pick at the time anyway, but still). Either way, it's not something to stress over, I would just love to see an indie game like a Limbo, Journey, or Inside win sometime.

I forgot I even played UC4 this year lol. Entirely forgettable throwaway experience in my mind. I wouldn't put it even close to top 10 for the year.
