I really think Overwatch deserves GoTY over Uncharted 4. It's historically unlikely.

If anything, Uncharted 4 should win the trying too hard award.

They took out what was fun about the previous games and replaced it with walking simulator elements.

Uncharted shouldn't even be a nomination. Uncharted 2? Sure. But 4 is not an amazing game.
Yep, only thing amazing about are the graphics. UC is not as great as people want it to be. Some points were absolutely atrocious. The first 7 chapters ruined it for me. I finished it, but I have no desire to replay it.

Mine goes to The Witness. Dared to be different and succeeded.

Overwatch is good, but I wouldn't give it GotY

I can agree here, and I think it's because of why it's divisive. Uncharted 4, fairly unanimously, is regarded as the best playing Uncharted. Certainly has the best graphics of the series, but there's simply a group of gamers that loved the slower paced build up, walking/talking segments, and had a great time with the pacing, while others felt it just wasn't exciting enough.

Exactly, this kind of design isn't going to be 100% loved especially considering it's a bit of a departure from previous Uncharted games. Honestly, the pacing is way more like TLOU than Uncharted. Speaking of that game, the hyperbolic "Citizen Kane of gaming" reaction to it attracts its share of blind hate to it and every future ND or Druckmann game. It's unfair, yes, but so was being held to that regard in the first place. Someone asked why GTA V didn't get as much shit, it's not hard to see why: it was never hyped to be capital A Art.

So you add a game design that wasn't going to be loved by everyone to a history of media hype on the studio that just asks people to either be contrarian or to play the game expecting something way bigger than it can deliver. That's just a dangerous mix.

Don't really understand the hype overwatch got. A boring copy of an altogether better game, but it has waifus in it so nvm.

There has been Such high caliber games this year. Doom deserves all the praise it can get. Then we have civ IV, XCOM 2, blood and wine (my personal goty). So many great titles I haven't even touched yet too.

When are we getting a true tribes remake?

Uncharted 4 was scaled back in scope to focus on the story and character development, it's as close to a movie I have personally seen a game get.The visuals and art style are insane giving off a realistic yet fantastical look of these landscapes lost to time. The acting in Uncharted is also top of the line and the game comes complete with very fun and robust yet underappreciated multiplayer.

Overwatch on the other hand captures that Blizzard magic with its art-style and character personality. The game is so polished that you can almost see a visible shine during gameplay. It fails short in the single player aspect but makes up for it in multiplayer. There are some negative aspects like micro transactions in a fully priced game and special event content lockout for the unfortunate few who didn't get the skin they wanted.

So when you compare the two packages you can see why Uncharted 4 may be the better contender. My personal GOTY is Witcher 3's DLC BLood and Wine.

edit: When it comes to gameplay, Uncharted refined its 3rd person cover system from other games and with the introduction of the hook and rope it really opened the level design. The climbing is divisive but it is a staple of the game and it is more refined then previous entries by making each climbing section more of a puzzle.
Overwatch on the other hand has a very smooth and almost perfect FPS gameplay from a technical aspect. Even thought the more I play Overwatch, the more I see the flaws in it's gameplay because of some fundamental balance issues that Blizzard has tried to address thankfully and will continue in the future.

It's an absolutely incredible game. It excels way beyond the competition on multiple levels.

Multiple levels?

Graphics and?
Shooting and story is by the numbers,
climbing is boring (so 80% of the game),
pacing is attrocious,
puzzles are a joke.

Really don't see it.

Of the games nominated? I'd give it to Doom. Overwatch is pretty overrated in my opinion and Uncharted is a step back (despite graphics) from previous games in the series.

Overwatch to me just seems like a lazy play at moba/shooter crowd and ridiculous pandering with their not sexual at all but super sexualized characters. Don't even get me started on how the game never should've been $60 in the first place.

Graphics, combat, story and characters are all great.
Puzzles were always on the easy side in Uncharted games but then again most games' puzzles are easy these days unless the game is strictly about puzzles (like The Witness).

Yeah! I remember how everyone was saying UC2 didn't deserve GOTY. Things don't change. Maybe we'll get another rap about how people will be tasting Drake's balls.

But is the script or the acting of Oscar caliber? I don't think so. Then what's so good about a game being a movie instead of, you know, being fun?

I'll take Uncharted 4's script and acting over something like 2010 Best Picture Winner, The Hurt Locker.

Personally I don't think the game wasn't fun. It was tons of fun and the combat encounter sections were some of the best in the series when it came to freedom of approach but they may not feel memorable because as I said they were scaled back. There isn't a moving exploding train or a crashing plane section, or a supernatural twist in uncharted 4 like in previous entries so that may hit a sour note with many.

While I agree that Overwatch should be picked over Unchated 4, I (like many) think that Doom far surpasses both to me as game of the year. This is from someone who has put 300 hours into Overwatch.

No game should ever win game of the year without a campaign.

And for that reason Uncharted 4 will win it this year.

This is just the absolute worst logic. You seriously need to re-evaluate your definition of quality if you think having a campaign is the determining factor between a Game of the Year or not.

i never had so much fun with the other Uncharted Games as much as with the fourth one
their approaches in terms of Gameplay were one of the biggest highlights for me

Eh, Uncharted 4 isn't even the best in its own category this year. Inside is the far more interesting interactive narrative experience imo.

I think we've lost sight of the OP's topic anyway, which was how traditionally difficult it seems to be for a MP focused game to win GOTY over a SP game. If Overwatch can't do it, I'm not sure what the fuck can.

It is obvious Overwatch will win the Game Awards, they always picked the wrong game at those awards. The game that truly deserves the win is DOOM, nobody was expecting nothing and blew everyone's mind, not only is a technical masterpiece but it is by far the best solo campaign in an fps in the last decade.

Overwatch is a polished game, but gets old quickly and it is only revered cause it is made by blizzard, is not original or special in any way in my opinion.

Blizzard marketing

I didn't even care about it until the open beta, it was completely off my radar until I actually played it. I didn't watch the CG shorts until after I already bought the game. I didn't even know if I liked it at first, then I played more... and more... and more. My appreciation for the game was a slow build up, I wasn't even sure that it was my GOTY until recently.

Gonna have to go with a big fat NOPE for that one.

Overlooking how Overwatch really doesn't deserve GOTY over Uncharted 4, why on earth is OP putting so much weight behind Spike/Keighley's Game Awards? Why not the GDC Awards, DICE Awards or GAF's GOTY?

I don't play games to marvel at great acting. I play games for gameplay. UC4 is a wannabe movie with boring gameplay.

It wouldn't be outrageous if Overwatch won GOTY. Lots of people on my PSN friends list play it basically non-stop and have been since launch. For an online game to stick like that on console is pretty special and is deserving of recognition.

Personally though UC4 would be my pick. I loved every second of that game.

Its not a twist if it happens at the end of every game lol. I cant remember if its 2 or 3 that ends up in a mysical temple falling apart, but I feel like it was both. Or one of them was super unmemorable. Either way, 2 and 3 blend together so much in my head, and I only played them a year or so ago.

There are numerous games better than overwatch, that's why it won't win.

Hell, it's not even the best multiplayer game this year
