Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

So is there a verdict on this as Baby's first 4k HDR set to use with PS4 Pro?

If I'm going to be stuck with if for a least a few years and it's now or never, is it worth it? Currently I have a 1080p Philips which is just 'fine'.
 
Has anyone found any great settings for the 49"? I'm playing my PS4 Pro on it, and watching movies.

Video games look wonderful but movies have been up and down thus far...
 
My 43" X800D arrived last Sunday, an upgrade from my old Panny 37" IPS 1080p TV I've had for the past 8+ years.

Primarily using it as a computer monitor and mounted on my wall, looks great. I've been reading the feedback on these sets for settings and whatnot, thanks GAF for the tips!

Do you change your TV settings for movies? They are not that hard to calibrate. When i have time i'll post my settings. So i don't use my ps4 pro for streaming. I use the TV apps for that with their own calibration settings.
 
so after reading about the differences in the hdmi ports, what devices are suitable for ports 1 and 4?

I will be hooking the following items to it: gaming pc, ps4 pro, wii u, and in 2017 a Nintendo Switch. How's this look

hdmi 1: Wii U
hdmi 2: PC (i'll be trying 4K mode, but might fall back to 1080p for non-gaming usage)
hdmi 3: PS4 Pro
hdmi 4: Switch

Though I realize I might have to make some alterations if the Switch needs any features on the higher-end ports.

Would love to see what you settled on.

I've been using the PS4 media player to stream from my PC, the Plex app and media apps on the TV were giving me issues - but I do like the idea of that.

I was wondering which video settings do the apps use since they aren't technically an input?

You have it set up right.

4k stuff on port 2/3. 1080p stuff on 1/4.

Also note, even if you run your PC at 1080p, keep it on port 2 or 3 for full 4:4:4 bandwidth. I'm actually not sure if this is the case on this TV, but I know the "weaker" ports on some 4k TVs don't support 4:4:4.

My settings give or take. This are for streaming and movies, as well as playing 4k Movies on my XB1S.

Brightness 48
Contrast 92
Gamma 0
Black Level 56
Black Adjust to Low
Ad Contrast Enhance Medium

Color 50
Hue 0
Color temp Expert 1 (I used to go with neural or cool but i am rpetty happy with the warms of expert 1.

Live Color High (i use high on games too, i just like vibrant a whole lot more than muted. In Uncharted 4 its awesome.

Random Noise Reduction Low

If i know there are a lot of flashing lights in the movie and you get white or black spots from the contrast or black levels i just disable those. Its just nice when you get clear contrast.

But i guess the nature of the games i play with them tend to benefit from it.

the only time i ever switch between movies and game mode are when i use the XB1S to play a 4k movie.

When i use my pc its all games or browsing so i keep it on game mode.

This is why i like using the tv apps, since each app can have its own tv settings and calibration. Some of the Netflix calibrations might be a bit different from the amazon, from hbo now. But not by big numbers. Like Netflx, watching Stranger Things with the high contrast and flashing lights i disable auto contrast and black levels, or i get some splotchyness.

Games stay the same really. They just look good, maybe i would bring back the live color form high to medium or even low. Never turn it off tho. But again, i like vibrant colors so i keep them mostly on high and medium.

Gamma brings the brightness up and black levels. I've tried say TVRatings settings, but its too dark for my living room. These work just well, and the whites are bright and not washed out.

As far as video cards go, i have the GTX 1080. Nice card that supports HDR on Shadow Run 2. Which looks pretty amazing on the TV.

Things to take into consideration. I keep the resolution of the desktop on my pc while usin the TV to 1080p. For navigation ease, and its a friendlier resolution. Once i run any game or 4k content the TV adjusts and renders at 4k. I've had no issues whatsoever.

I also like that i have the streaming apps available on the TV, that means that i can use those instead of switching the calibration of the TV to a specific setting when using it from any of my hardware. So much nicer to have them all setup and not worry about it.

HDMI 1, tho i guess i should change it to either 2 or 3. But those are being used by the Pro and XB1S.

I have yet to notice the banding on the sky of Shadow Run 2 HDR. But maybe i am missing something?

I think 10 bit. But You can check on the tv settings to see if everything has the green checkmark. I forget where its at, somewhere in the settings. I think i keep it at 10.
 
Almost picked a 49" up today, if it had a good BF deal I probably would. But still in doubt. I have a VT20 still, and I fear for regular TV and non-4K broadcast this set will be a downgrade. The VT20 is just ridiculously good. If only it breaks down I'd have an excuse to go 4K lol. Have no Pro yet either, so need to buy that as well.

I am getting sick of bezels though.

It absolutely will be a downgrade for both those things. I have a P55ST50 (2013) and it's black levels can't be beat, and it definitely looks better with regular TV and non-4k broadcast material. If you are looking for a replacement for that, then you may as well wait for OLED to come down in price my man.

Thought as much. I checked the KS8000 as well which seems to be the best reviewed 4K right now. Problem is, its like 2000 euros here. Today was a 200 cashback deal. Still mighty expensive. XD80 costs like 1000.

If I buy a Pro down the line, then an upgrade is inevitable and I might settle for less as gaming is my number one priority. OLED is what i'm eyeing for the near future, but the LG input lag seems to be terrible still.

Was someone from GAF on Bay Area TV News Yesturday, being interviewed while waiting in line for this TV?

I just have a feeling that dude with the shades, that was excited to get this TV, is a Gaffer.

edit- whoops, my bad it was for a 55 inch Sony TV.

No burn in. Like all LED there is a chance of image retention, which is a faint ghosting of an image. Every single LED TV, Smartphone, Tablet can suffer this. But very rare. You won't see it for the life of this television.

Ks7000 is the European equivalent of ks8000 in the us
 
So the 43" version just arrived a couple of hours ago, got it set up and wow, what an upgrade from my previous TV!

Everything looks fantastic, the scaling is phenomenal - HD Sky channels look much better than I expected, even SD are far more watchable than I imagined they would be.

I need to sort out HDR on the PS4 Pro tomorrow, I thought I'd got it set up right (and it does say HDR on the picture menu when playing Ratchet and Clank) but the colours look off in places.

The quick menu when holding the PS button looks really washed out, a much lighter, almost more faded blue than it should be. When I quit R&C the menu looks fine (so presumably HDR is altering the display settings and they aren't quite right).

I need to do more investigation tomorrow, too tired right now so time to watch some TV shows on it. Really happy so far overall!

This will get you close to a calibrated 6500K color temp with a nominally 2.2 gamma. So use these as a starter, if you like.

Don't worry about the XBM quick menu, it SHOULD be washed out when an HDR game is enabled, it is SDR content with no associated HDR metadata.

Currently, content must be mastered in HDR, it's not something that happenes without extra effort, or automatically.

I just rebooted the PS4..gonna try again from scratch.

lol ok well the issue you are describing should be at least fixed by enabling Enhanced HDMI signal, the Pro outputs at 4K 60 Hz and some HDMI inputs can't handle that bit rate.

SETTINGS > EXTERNAL INPUTS > HDMI SIGNAL FORMAT > ENHANCED

i thought it was really light after the one i owned, and the one i previously purchased that i returned. Its also really thin and nice. haha
 
I picked up the 49 inch for my Pro. For that price it's a quality product.

Is there any difference between between HDMI 2 & 3?
3 says ARC next to it but I don't know what it means

ARC means Audio Return Channel.

It basically means that you can input and output audio from that same port. Say if you need to use a sound bar.

Do use 2 and 3 for HDR, and remember to set your HDMI to "Enhanced" in the settings.

Thank you! I used your settings and things look a lot more natural now - in default mode the brightness was much higher.

That's good to know about HDR as well, it sounds like I did have it set up correctly in that case. I wonder if Sony will introduce a "HDR version" of the OS in a future FW update for when it's running HDR content?

I bought this set fully knowing it doesn't support dolby vision (few affordable sets do right now), but I'm curious what other buyers think about this standard and if it will be important a year or two from now or will HDR10 be enough to get you by for maybe 3 or 4 years?

Sony uses it for PS4, MS uses it for XO and soon on OS-level in Windows 10, NVIDIA Gameworks HDR implementation uses it too. I think it's safe to assume both standards will co-exist and neither will vanish. Much like with audio (DTS / Dolby).

Weird. So hdmi 1 is working at 4k 60 with hdr? I thought only 2 and 3 were hdr ??

HDR10 will be the more common one going forward

Display Stream Compression (DSC) is a terrible technology. It causes black screens and input lag.
