Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Yea. Same thing i said after everyone kept telling me that its only good for HDMI ports 2 and 3. o_O.

Can you run a frame skipping test? Search Google for ufo frame skipping test and run it. Take a pic of your screen to see if it's skipping frames.

Hdmi 1.4 shouldn't be able to do 4k 60Hz 444. Also are you running 4:2:2 or 4:2:0? Hdmi doesn't have the band with to do 4k 60 hdr 444, so most likely shadow warrior isn't actually running in hdr.

There has been a few requests for picture settings, so I am going to cross post from another forum entirely. Hope this helps some folks out.

Here are my dark room PS4 Pro 43" X800D calibration settings.

Picture Mode: Game
Auto Picture Mode: Off
Light Sensor: Off

Menu: Advanced Settings:

Submenu:Brightness
Brightness: Min
Contrast: 95
Gamma: 0
Black Level: 50
Black Adjust: Off
Adv. Contrast enhancer: off

Submenu: Color
Color: 47
Hue: 0
Color temperature: expert 1
Adv. color temperature: Here I have calibrated with HCFR using an i1Display Pro and do not want to post the RGB corrections (they will not be correct for your set)

Submenu: Clarity
Sharpness: 50
Reality Creation: Off

Submenu: Motion
Motionflow: Custom
Clearness: Max

Submenu: Video Options:
HDR mode: Auto
HDMI video range: Auto
Color Space: Auto

Thats it, there is no CMS available that I am aware of, although I did test primary and secondary colors with 25% saturations sweeps. If I recall I saw a max of ~3 dE

For the PS4:
Submenu: Video Output settings
Resolution: Auto
RGB Range: Auto
HDR: Auto
Deep Color Output: Auto

Thats it. For non-HDR games, the Pro outputs 2160p 8-bit RGB 4:4:4.

For HDR games, users are reporting everything from 8-bit 4:2:0 to 12-bit 4:2:2, just remember, HDR is always in LIMITED video range!

This can be due to an EDID handshake issue, most probably, although I do have my own conspiracy theory about it lol.

And thats it, and inFAMOUS Second Son is stunning in HDR, particularly with Delson's neon powers, this game in particular should not be washed out in the least bit.

cheers

EDIT: I should mention that this is an SDR calibration, I can not calibrate HDR yet, need a way to generate the test patterns I don't have a cheap solution yet.

Here is what I do for setting HDR brightness. Start the game in at a calibrated SDR picture level. Be in an area of a very average picture brightness, not in the dark or staring into the sun.Use this average picture luminosity (how bright the screen is in your memory - I know not perfect, but you can get it very close) and when you switch on HDR< adjust the backlight (called brightness for Sony) until these luinocities appear to match.

Remember, SDR and HDR should ideally have the same average picture luminosity with content below 100 nits!

Hey, III-V, what would you recommend for a PC Calibration?

I probably will have my PC set to 4:2:2 at 10-Bit so I can utilize HDR on the few PC games that currently support it at the moment such as Shadow Warrior 2.

I am hoping for a calibration that would be suitable for gaming on my PC. I'll be using your settings on my PS4 Pro, but I just need to get some settings ironed down for my PC.

I have the 49 inch version of the X800D if that matters. From what I understand the 49 inch version has an IPS panel, rather than VA like the 43 inch version, so I don't know if that also would require slight tweaks of the calibration as well due to panel differences.

First time I ever tried to calibrate a tv myself, so I'm kind of clueless at the moment.

All 4 ports are HDCP 2.2 complaint, but it doesn't necessarily mean all those ports support Deep Color for HDR.

Okay, I see.

So if I have a PC, PS4 Pro, and One S all hooked up to the TV, one won't be getting full functionality and I'll need to swap hdmi cables around depending on what I'm using to get full benefits.

I was gonna update my old post, but since you replied:

I'm on mobile, so apologies for not being able to copy everything, but essentially, yes, if you want HDR, you need your consoles and PC on HDMI 2 or 3 because of 4K 60 Hz compatibility and Deep Color (10 bit) support.

Exactly. Gotta do the same, if you happen to buy a splitter to resolve this that works for 4K HDR, let us now which one :) I'm kinda inclined to do it but it seems like such a crapshoot.

I would love to be corrected, but the only splitter I know of that's possible for 4K HDR is the HD Fury Integral. That's outside of most average consumer budgets however. And most other splitters purported might do 4K at best, but no HDR.

For now, I'm just running PC and PS4 Pro to HDMI 2 & 3. I use my XB1S the least, so having it on 1 or 4 isn't too bad. Eventually though, I'm going to need a solution to give me everything.

All ports do 4k at 24hz and 30hz guaranteed. The question is whether ports 1 and 4 allow 4k/60hz. HDMI 2.0 has enough juice to allow 5k/60fps which is different from 4k/30hz etc.

I would put whatever you have that has HDR content on 2 and 3 for now, and keep other things on 1 and 4 for 4K output. The manual and marketing materials are somewhat misleading because it says tv signal that it does 4k/60hz but then the manual says 2 and 3 HDMI only.

Ok, so a PC is typically set to work in RGB, so if you are going to focus on YUV422, you will need to calibrate for limited (as opposed to full) settings. Most of the settings I posted aren't panel specific, so they should be fine.

Here is what I recommend tweaking for each individual display:

Brightness: (this is the backlight) needs to be set for comfortable viewing. In dim/dark, set it low, for bright rooms, set it higher.

Contrast: use the contrast test patter to test this. Do not be surprised if you can 'max' it out without clipping

Black Level: (this is traditionally called brightness on 95% of displays) this is critical for properly setting your darkest black and blacker than black.

Sharpness: This filter adds noise the image to help eyes pick out sharp lines, angles and edges. Its good in small amounts, and detrimental when set too high.

I would advise you to focus on the luminance (as above) first, it really is about 80% of the battle.

D/L the AVS 709 disc and run it (in limited YUV422), and follow the instructional videos. They are not long to watch and really should explain most everything.

Realize you won't really be able to calibrate for HDR... yet, there are no patterns that can be done by eye.

My friend got the EU version of 43X800D. It works fine with PS4 Pro, but he has a big issue when he connected it to PC [Asus Strix Radeon 470X]. Every 10-15 seconds the screen goes briefly black and turns back with TV showing the reconnection info. The TV shows that 2160p resolution is active even when he sets his PC to output in 1080p.

Any suggestions?

sound like a hdmi handshake issue. Try updating the firmware if possible.

I think I've got everything set up now - picture looks good, HDR working, inputs named and it can even control the Sky box! That's a brilliant feature.

The one slight disappointment is that even though it supports connecting a DS4 right there on the home screen, it won't pass the TV audio through to the 3.5mm jack on the DS4. Would have been really nice for night time TV watching.

I have a couple of very small annoyances that I wonder if anyone has encountered and managed to fix:

1. When I press the Action Menu button, there's some sort of social / tweet thing that seemingly picks a random topic. I have no idea how it gets this info but I know I'll never ever use Twitter through the TV - is there a way to disable this?
2. I've set the TV remote to control my AV receiver's volume, which works fine - except for the volume being shown on the screen by the TV not corresponding to the actual volume. I set it to 0 to see if that fixed it but the volume goes something like this:

AVR 0 TV 0
AVR 1 TV 1
AVR 2 TV 2
AVR 3 TV 5 (?!)
AVR 4 TV 6
AVR 5 TV 8

etc etc so at volume 36, the TV is showing about 48. It's hardly a massive inconvenience but it's just strange, almost seems like a bug.

The difference is quite significant. Colors are sharper and there is a wider range of them.

Just for reference, the game is running on highest settings, at 4k and it doesn't drop from 60fps. Its good. Using the GTX 1080.

Also, took some screens of my settings, for people asking for my pc settings.

This is an awesome idea!! never thought about it either. I'v ebene struggling trying to find a solution for wireless headphones for the tv for when i use the wiiU. The wiiU is so dumb that some games won't stream all the audio through the sound jack of the pad. Its so annoying. For PC, Ps4 and XB1S i have options.

Also, it was a big letdown that the tv doesn't support the Bose wireless noise cancelling headphones, because the Andriod TV side of it doesn't support the format. =\

For those who own the X800D model tv, are you guys pleased with it????

Thats a big yes.

^ thx for running frame skip test! Curious is that the 49 or 43?

Ok so looks like all the hdmis are full blown hdmi 2.0 with hdr support, at least on a pc.

Has anyone had problems in hdmi 1 or 4 getting hdr to work on a console?

Lastly do we know if the $600/$650 pricing is temporary sale pricing or does it look like that's the new standard prices?

I bought the 55" version X850D and am just completely blown away by how good my games look. Ratchet and Clank looks sublime.

I thought they all did 4k/60hz. I didn't know they all did HDR too? But in retrospect. We only went by the manual.

I will try 4K and HDR in input 4 right now. Input one is a hassle to try and reach for me.

For those who own the X800D model tv, are you guys pleased with it????

Absolutely. Money actually wasn't my biggest concern, but I am pretty pragmatic and realize that right now probably is not the right time to buy into a high end 4K HDR set that you'll really be happy with for 3+ years. At least I don't see one on the market right now that I would feel good about purchasing for that purpose. So the X800D is filling a really useful role for me where I can enjoy 4K and HDR to a solid extent and won't feel bad about setting aside sometime in the next 12-24 months for a true high end 4K HDR display. It feels like the industry is on the cusp of a big push in this direction, similar to how things shook out with 1080p "HD" displays.

Are you running in 8 bit 4:2:0?

On hdmi 1 and hdmi 4 at 4k 60Hz in Nvidia control panel the only option I have is 8 bit and 4:2:0.

49x800d.

This happened to me when I didn't have the HDMI format set to Enhanced (TV Home -> Settings -> External Inputs -> HDMI Format), because at first if I had it set to Enhanced my PC wasn't detecting the display automatically. After setting it to Enhanced I had to go into the NVidia control panel and actually enable the second display, at which point I could choose more appropriate settings.

Enable the second display?

Yeah, in the NVidia control panel under Display Settings -> Set up Multiple Displays (bottom option in that tree). You should see the TV show up in the list as SONY TV *00; check the box next to that entry and you can set it up with the proper settings.

How typical is the backlight bleed along the top of the panel on this tv?

It's pretty bad on my 49x800d.

Regretting returning my 55h8c which had zero bleed for this right now. Blacks are also no where near as good because of the ips panel. Pq in general is slightly worse imo too, though I haven't had time to calibrate, but our of the box I'm not really impressed. May end up returning and getting an h8c again. Colors do seem a bit better and hdr video on Netflix and Amazon seems to be somewhat more noticeable.

If I exchange for a different x800d will there still likely be bleed along the top of the panel? Super annoying with black barred movies and dark scenes even full screen.

This is what shows up for me. But i also can do this.

What card are you using? or are you using the ps4?

Have you done a chroma test?

Hdmi 2.0 does not have the band with to do 444 10 bit much less 12 bit. So something is up with that.

I have to retest with this second monitor thing. Are you doing a second monitor set up like Wallach?

A gtx 1070.

Is there way you can send a picture of your blacks. Go to youtube app. Run a black screen test video and then take a pic. Should show best if you have the lights off as well.

Nope. This is the only display hooked up to my consoles and rig.

I guess i can check the Chroma Test. Let me google it.

EDIT: i can read the last two lines no problem. Took a photo.

I don't think the camera does justice to it, but its still readable. Does this count?

Well, it would depending on what resolution he is actually running. brau's resolution is not shown in those images.

So would this be 4.4.4 if i had it connected to HDMI ports 2 or 3?

Yes.

But only 8 bit. You can't run 10 bit 444. Hdmi lacks the bandwith.

Devs aren't making games for 10 bit anyway on pc so you don't need 10 bit. I don't know if shadow warrior is recommended to run 10 bit 422 or 8 bit 444.

I guess i can check. I'll plug it in and report.

I guess this will only matter for HDR then? PC is totally ok to be on port 1?

Thanks! Yeah I would but I'm with my gf and she got sick of me tinkering with the tv like 2 hours ago lol.

Well, if you don't read a lot of text, it's ok, but pc is usually 444 so you may notice colors being a bit off in games and video content.

I'll mess around with the TV in the morning. I'll plug it into HDMI port 2 and do that test again. Then i'll see how Shadow Warrior 2 looks with the HDR then. I guess i am truly running the game not on its best light? or maybe it is? too many things to check.

so is game mode always suggested for all games? or just the ones that require quick reponses like shooters/fighting etc

Gives you the lowest input lag. Though you shouldn't have an issue playing single player games. What you can also try and do is enable game mode, but change some settings to try and mimic standard or vivid, ie change color temp to warm or neutral, increase live color to medium or low, tinker with the black level settings.
