The Last of Us Part II announced

I was on a Discord server and we were watching the keynote together. Before the conference I said "When they DO announce TLoU 2, I will eat my hat. This is more E3-worthy."
Well, after the conference, the first thing I heard was: "So, about that hat..."

God damn, Sony. You did it again.

What, you mean announced something WAY to fucking early? I'm sick thinking about how many more shows we'll see Death Stranding and TLOU2 before we actually get to play them.

Wait, they are using facial capture? They have always hand animated their faces.
Their rigs are so complex that it's an incredibly bad idea especially since they're realistic.

They do a mix a facial capture and hand animated animation now. That started with U4.
UC4 had cutscenes that were solely keyframed because they started doing that at the beginning of development and then realized, "oh fuck this is a bad idea." The most uncanny valley looking scenes in UC4 are those where the facial animation is solely keyframed.

Facial Animation data is always touched up and polished.

This video is nothing but pure hype. Can't believe people were hating on this crowd.

People hated on the crowd? The crowd was amazing! It was great to be there, the pure energy after Layden said "Just one last thing" was out of fucking control. We all knew. And when that Firefly logo showed on the traffic sign, it was pure fucking madness.

Not exactly sure if I'm allowed to do so but I filmed (with my phone...) a live reaction from the inside with Neil, Ashley and Troy just three rows front from me get up and hug at the end of the teaser :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhOB05hs6_o

That was amazing!

Man I imagine that was hugely nerve wracking for them, actually being down in there with the crowd like that with no idea how the crowd will respond. I'm sure they hoped for the best and were confident with what they worked on but until you put something out there you never really know how people will respond.

Must have been overwhelming hearing the crowd cheer like that.

Eh you know the usual, obnoxious, too loud, too hype. All wrong opinions.

I thought the ending of Joel and Ellie's story was perfect and was worried what would happen if their story was continued. But knowing Naughty Dog themselves were very cautious about only continuing their story only if they absolutely had the right one to tell, I trust them, and I'm hyped!

Honestly I wouldn't be as excited if they just revealed Last of Us 2 with some new characters.

Ah, well, that's ok, perhaps they don't understand what it feels like to be there with all that hype and energy surrounding you. They are always welcome to go watch the quiet, pure, 4K version of the trailer alone on YouTube :P

I'll be curious to see the new variant types of infected.

In the concept art gallery for TLOU there was a lot of unused concepts for infected that were really good.

I don't own a PS4 (but I will now) and I don't like ND games overall, so I hadn't been following TLOU2 rumors at all, if there were any. This totally blindsided me. I really wasn't sure if they'd come back to it. Man, I'm so excited.

Also, if Joel is alive, it makes no sense for him to tag along as the a.i sidekick

Either he's dead and appears as Ellie's coping mechanism, or Ellie goes off on her own while Joel says "lol k, see u around"

So guess they are just going to forget about the ending of the first one
where her infection was growing
if so then makes me like the ending not as good as I thought.

Didn't even think a 2nd one was necessary.

I really wish that it was new characters :/

Me too...but I can't help get excited by the sequel to one of my most favorite games ever.
I felt indifferent about UC4 when it was first announced and that turned out to be fantastic game. I have full confidence in Naughty Dog making another worthy sequel.

"Part II" implies a continuation. No doubt ND always had plans for a sequel if the first was successful.
It implies a continuation but that itself doesn't mean they definitely knew there would be a sequel, unless they have actually said that. Anyway, what I meant is the ending was satisfying and I wouldn't have been upset if they were done with Joel and Ellie.

I knew as soon as we saw the forested overgrowth that my favorite game was back. Bring on TLOU part 2, baby. Day One purchase of whatever the most outlandish collectors edition they have.

love the first one's ending
but i feel like spending more time with the characters while shifting the theme to hate is a great idea to explore the consequences and mental development

Consider that TWD is consistently better written and handled than the narrative in TLOU, (not having a character who has a magical cure because reasons for one), and handles death better than TLOU because we usually have a much better understanding of the characters than the relatively short amount of screen time they had in TLOU. Character deaths have changed a shit ton of the characters in these shows, how was Joel changed by the death of Sam and Henry? He wasn't. It's not even just deaths either, it's seeing the characters get genuinely hurt. It was literally hard to breath during this moment in GoT's last season, because that's how into it the audience was. TLOU has no moment like that, and is much more pornographic since look at how many people die in comparison to Joel and Ellie. When these things leave them, especially Joel, relatively unchanged it's hard to get invested as the biggest character change comes from Ellie having to face David without Joel around. It takes 3/4ths of the game for Ellie to experience a major change in character and personality.

Oh there will be consequences alright, preferably in the form of bullets, to Joel's skull. But i'm sure he'll be fine once he gets some more penicillin.

Oh you'd be surprised how much gamers hype up a game like TLOU and think it holds up well against something like Breaking Bad. Some would even tell you that it's the best narrative ever.

I mean if it was a minority i'd understand but holy shit do gamers hold up the narrative of TLOU as some golden egg that is absolutely comparable to modern day television or

Literally how pulp action flicks usually work. The action heroes are coated in plot armor, that doesn't really mean anything to me when I'm along to watch a silly action story unfold.
Then maybe we should stop treating UC games as a golden egg of video game narratives. especially since the one that realized the most that it was pulp without a shit ton of contrivances to justify the actions of Drake was UC2. Nathan Drake wasn't an asshole in UC2, he was an unwilling hero/thief, he's a straight up asshole in UC3/4 and thus it's much harder to empathize with him when his wife gets mad or leaves him or feel happy when she comes back yet again.[/QUOTE]

I could not disagree with this post more. I'm not sure you quite understand how video games and television are different mediums. Both can and do tell amazing stories but they can do things differently due to the mechanics of how stories are told.

No idea how you can still think this after watching the trailer and Neil, Troy, and Ashley's comments in the panel.

Different priorities.
I would have preferred new characters in the same world at different places. Possibly even non-US.
I know too much about the characters, that's the main issue. It makes it interesting in how they have developed and deal with new situations but their past isn't reset like with new characters. Think about it, you can't do the intro scene of first game in the second game simply because you already told that story. I don't get to explore that anymore.
The timeskip will help though.

Joel isn't dead

Druckmann said he sees TLOU as a story about Joel and Ellie.

Who knows what happens by the end but I'm confident that Joel's role is bigger than a motivational cue for Ellie

Glad Neil addressed the concerns of going back to these characters and making a sequel. Even addressed naming it, "Part II", showing that they are fully confident in making this something special.

Idk if you're talking about the show or the game but either way TWD most definitely is not better written. Many characters in both feel and act more like cartoons than people.

Joel has been living in a world of death for 20 years, and Ellie grew up in that world, so yeah people dying aren't gonna phase them quite as much anymore, and it's that clinicaity that makes the death scenes so impactful to players. Human beings don't experience major changes very often either, so I consider it a mark of good writing that it took a pretty monumental situation to have a major shift in her character, rather than the subtler relationship building that occured throughout the journey prior to winter.

Also GOT is about as pornographic as you can get in terms of violence. The major deaths in LoU are all to highlight specifc thematic notes in relation to Joel and Ellie's characters, and the most gruesome violence is either off screen or hard cut away from.
