The Last of Us Part II announced

Cross posting from the Ellie is the main character Thread.

the song the Ellie sings in the Trailer is "Through the Valley" from Shawn James

According to the Panel one of the first things Neil said to Ashley about the game was to learn that song. Maybe only for the Trailer but still, if he knew from very early that he wanted that song he could very well think that this song captures alot about the themes of the game.

Now in the trailer she sings the following part:

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
I fear no evil because I'm blind to it all.
My mind and my gun they comfort me,

because I know I'll kill my enemies when they come.
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell on this earth forevermore.
I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul,
but I can't walk on the path of the right because I'm wrong.

Already fitting yes, but the original songtext goes a bit further, and it stays thematically very near on the last of us and could therefore maybe be interesting, this is how it goes on.

Well I came upon a man at the top of a hill,
call himself the savior of the human race.
Said he come to save the world from destruction and pain,
but I said how can you save the world from itself.

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
I fear no evil because I'm blind.
I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul,
but I know when I die my soul is damned.

Sounds pretty fitting for Ellie's situation.
Who knows, maybe a bit forshadowing about Ellie's path or at least her mindset in the game.

Naughty dog everyone.

Consider that TWD is consistently better written and handled than the narrative in TLOU, (not having a character who has a magical cure because reasons for one),

TWD is most likely one of the worst written shows on TV right now in terms of having interesting characters, decent motivation, overall pacing...

(not having a character who has a magical cure because reasons for one),

You're bitching about a plot device? Isn't meant to be all that much investigated. You're acting like it was some late game twist that changed the course of the story, when it was revealed an hour into the game and treated like such. Really strange thing to complain about.

Character deaths have changed a shit ton of the characters in these shows, how was Joel changed by the death of Sam and Henry?

It's been 20 years since the outbreak, Joel has killed dozens upon dozens of people in that span. That moment was still a shock for him, but it was far more impactful to Ellie. You even see Joel react to Ellie trying to bring up the scene in the Fall, with Joel shutting her down because he has learned to cope with death by simply shutting it out and not dealing with it (a common theme with Joel and a major arc of his).

When these things leave them, especially Joel, relatively unchanged it's hard to get invested as the biggest character change comes from Ellie having to face David without Joel around. It takes 3/4ths of the game for Ellie to experience a major change in character and personality.

Joel is the player device to get through Ellie's story. Ellie is the main character when it comes down to it, it's why we end the game playing her. Joel has experienced the end of the world, he knows how to survive. 20 years of being a killing machine to just survive does turn you into a bit of a hollow stick, and even then it's obvious he still has to make attempts to block a lot of it out when it comes to Tess, Sam and Henry.

And while yes, Ellie's major arc happened in winter, the relationship of Ellie+Joel was building throughout the game.

Seriously, comparing TWD to TLoU as some type of standard?

Different priorities.
I would have preferred new characters in the same world at different places. Possibly even non-US.
I know too much about the characters, that's the main issue. It makes it interesting in how they have developed and deal with new situations but their past isn't reset like with new characters. Think about it, you can't do the intro scene of first game in the second game simply because you already told that story.
The timeskip will help though.
A sequel with totally different characters would be dumb

TLOU's strength was its main characters, the world building was good but there are so many post apoc games in existence that it doesn't stand out all that much. To prove my point - nobody would have batted an eyelid if Days Gone had been named as a TLOU spin off

Getting rid of the characters entirely would be silly because that is what separates it from others in the genre

Maybe a DLC spin off story with new characters but the core of the franchise is Joel and Ellie

Whether you think their story is done is one thing. I'd take either the continuation of their story or leaving it at one game over the choice of entirely new cast

Yeah... like TellTale's TWD, I wouldn't want to play a sequel without a direct connection to the first game. My interest in the characters drives my interest in the world--without them, what would even be the point of TLoU 2?
What am I looking at?

Ellie's horrible tattoo and its inspiration(?).

🤔

The Last Last of Us
The Leftovers of Us
Ultimate Last of Us
The Limited of Us
Super Last of Us Melee
The Last of Us: Subsistence
Ellie Goes Bananas: The Last of Us Country

It's all bad jokes. I beat it on PS3 and PS4 on survivor

Wow, one of my favorite games coming back, can't believe we are already getting some info about it. I like the fact that Ellie and Joel will in the game again.

I hope they show how Ellie got the tatoo. The setup they use in that world and her reaction to the pain/how it gets done.

Plus Ashley Johnson is perfect as Ellie, I'm glad we are getting more of that.

Definitely interested, the 1st game was awesome. But I guess it's safe to assume it won't be released before 2018, so I really am not that excited... will be closer to release date.

2018 release?

Well TLoU 1 was revealed at the VGAs 2011, and it came out 2013 so I'd assume so. I believe it was scheduled for 2012 but delayed into 2013 too. I expect they are probably gonna aim for April to June 2018. Especially if the game has been in development for 2 and half years.

If I have a 4K TV or monitor by the time this comes out, I'll get a PS4 Pro.

Reminds me that I haven't finished a play through of the last of us for almost a year.

I knew as soon as we saw the forested overgrowth that my favorite game was back. Bring on TLOU part 2, baby. Day One purchase of whatever the most outlandish collectors edition they have.

Same. I don't really buy CE unless it is a special(like The Last Guardian), but this qualifies so I want the most expensive one they make.

I learned about this because Youtube recommended the trailer......

The cheers as the crowd saw the Firefly logo.... TT_____TT

I guess getting a PS4 Pro is a sure thing now.... TT_____TT

You misunderstand. The characters being the game's strength is the main reason why I wanted a new cast (of equally good characters).

The game can still be very interesting if they lean in all the way into Ellie being a raging murderer now. That aspect you can not pull off with new characters as people won't be sympathetic.

People are going to be in for a shock when they remember they can't swing across chasms with ropes and climb up waterfalls in TLOU and instead have to deal with God awful enemy design to top it off.

Like UC4 was finally an Uncharted game with great gunplay, cool level design and no bullet sponges and TLOU 2 is coming here to fuck things up again. Boy oh boy can't wait to toss my rope and platforming skills in for crouch walking and hilarious bullet sponges!

Who knows, maybe Naughty Dog will surprise me and create a zombie game with actually engaging zombie enemies this time. Or maybe they'll double down on brain dead puzzles like the first game and terrible pacing like UC4 and Left Behind. Who knows!

Man, you really do have some wacky opinions!

"Updated engine for PS4".

This comment stuck out to me. So they're using the Last of Us Engine with a some new bells and whistles to take advantage of the PS4?

I always assumed they would just use the Uncharted 4 engine.

Th details in the trailer are beyond imagination: Ellie leaving blood stain on the tuning pegs when trying to configure the guitar, the dust coming from the hole of the guitar when she plays it, the guitar parts inside the hole are modeled, the strings of the guitar in spiral shape and even reflecting the world, The neck wound of Ellie open and closes when she sings...
I can't describe real-life details in a sentence. Naughty Dog have all the passion and lust for details that nobody can notice.

They also said: Part II Will Include “A Lot of New Tech;” “It’s Amazing”

They only have one engine. He just means the engine has been updated since Uncharted 4.
