Ellie is the main playable character in The Last of Us: Part II

People can't just enjoy a girl being badass/psychopathic serial killer taking out an entire house full of people then playing a guitar bathed in their blood can they..

Its always gotta be "myeh, i can't project myself onto a girl, i'll get cooties!"

How is this even a thing. I'd totally relate to someone like Ellie more than some marine dudebro regardless of her gender.

Don't make me hate Ellie more than I already do. She's already a trash human being after TLOU but don't make her Joel level trash human being.

Good, Ellie is awesome and in the trailer she is a badass

Pffff I enjoy that a lot <_<

Between that and if Horizon turns out good I might finally get myself a PS4, and play the first one as well.
I dont like this, i fukin love joel he should be playable othewise its just tomb raider with ellie.
Instead of Tomb Raider with Joel then ? I'm fine with that. Even though Tomb Raider and TLOU don't seem to have much in common.

Haha, I can't believe people are bitching about this when you played as her in the first game, the DLC and most of what happens in the first game is centered around her. Makes completely sense that we'd play her now that she's an adult.

This is a bit of a "cheat" argument in the conversation, but Druckmann/Straley confirmed that
Ellie's brain would have led to a cure.

Holy shit, where'd he say this?
Through some paperwork in the last area, it was alway assumed that Ellie wasn't 100% confirmed to lead to a cure since she wasn't the only one immune but that changes the ending completely. Makes the ending so much better, though.

Really strange that because Joel is selfish and an asshole means I'm defending the government. I'm not.

His decision was NOT for the good of Ellie though. It's also why I think their relationship has deteriorated over the years.

Ellie isn't his daughter. She's a person who makes HIM feel a little better after the fact he lost his daughter. Joel was still willing to pass Ellie along to the next person even after they had been together for so long.

It's evil because he gives a shit more about how HE feels more so than Ellie herself.

That lie is protecting himself because he knows it was bullshit and it's against what Ellie wanted.

Wow. You really didn't get this game at all.

The reason Joel tries to pawn Ellie off on his brother is because he could feel himself growing attached and starting to love her. Joel chose not to love anything or anyone else in that world after Sara because he couldn't bear to lose them again.

Ellie is the first person he started to care about as much as his daughter and that made him so afraid that he felt he had to get rid of her. For her sake. He didn't feel fit to watch over her because he believed he is a person that loses what he loves.

God, it blows my mind how simple and ignorant people are about the events of this game (especially the ending). Some people need to take an English class. Learn how to properly digest and analyze a story beyond its surface.

You stole my post. Perfect :)

I'm cool with this change, per se.

But what is strange, is that it feels more like a forced political statement than a fluid storytelling device, like an executive order to be more PC. This is evident from the DLC of Uncharted. Don't be fooled, they are doing to be more PC, not because they want a female lead. This is bad type of feminism and it works against the females.

Imagine working in a meeting on the draft of the script and even suggesting to not choose a female lead? Is not socially appraisive nowadays. So, there is no arguing against it.

Everyone is using all types of media to manifest political views, more and more. Not that is something wrong with it, but kinda turn off the escapism of the gaming media. To the trained mind, you can easily spot this stances. Feels too forced.

I'll not support this, even being a feminist, because of the sense of a forced political agenda that puts female on a pity zone.

I know you're banned but I just have to say:

It is so fucking funny that you call yourself a feminist. This is just like "now I own both consoles but..."

I absolutely loved Joel, and I wish I could've played as him again, but I don't mind this at all.

Ellie was just as awesome and fun. Eager to see what set of abilities they give her.

I said I was disappointed that we can't play as Joel - he's expressing the same thing.

I've done exactly that. It's not at all because she's a female character - I've explained that I don't like her attitude, her demeanor and I don't like her as a character or even her design - I just don't gel with her.

Clever...

We don't even know that? All that has been confirmed is Ellie is taking the lead. What is with the jump to conclusions mat coming out for a game we know like nothing about? If Joel is playable maybe it's just 55 / 45 in favour of Ellie. No one knows. So why on earth are some of you saying Joel isn't playable? ND didn't say that.

I mean at least you've tried to claw back some sense of normality from your original remark that gave you some heat. It was a bit of a daft thing to say (as a 40 year old man I cannot fathom playing a teenage girl... I mean you already did in TLoU and that game is Joel AND Ellie's story), however sure, opinions be opinions. I don't appreciate the members on here who sometimes group together and dog-pile aggressively as if to either try and start arguments or ban bait. It's fine to call out a seemingly weak argument like I did to you originally but I will defend some of the eye-rolling aggressive posts that came your way. Unpopular opinion can be called out without always getting so aggressive, I dunno why some posters are seemingly turned to post aggressively nearly all the time!

The other dude who got banned though, that was some top tier shit posting... TLoU is the bad type feminism? What? ND in particular have created some great female leads/sidekicks.

So much salt here for joel, he needs to be acknowledged also. He took care of Ellie like father figure for the first full game, he could have walked off. Leaving joel for cutscenes would not be good. We should play as both.

People are going to flip when Joel inevitably dies at the end

"Inevitably."

I think the worst thing you could do is assume Neil Druckmann will make the obvious choice.

Also, this ghost thing people are throwing around. Do you honestly think Neil would engage in one of the most hackneyed, clichéd tropes in narrative fiction?

I'll trust the devs more than you.

Joel hasn't done anywhere near this metal.

Did you play "The Last Of Us - Winter" or "The Last Of Us: Left Behind"?

Ellie clears out entire towns of people/creatures in brutally efficient style.

Not only that. It was clearly show in the game that during the 20 year period between outbreak and Ellie, Joel was part of the roaming bands of bandits that prayed on the innocents. He did everything to survive, including being part of Fireflies with his brother, and eventually becoming ruthless gun smuggler together with Tess.

And in the winter chapter, he murdered his captives after he tortured them for information.

why can't we have a choice playing as a male or a female? You want to have an empowering female lead you can play Tomb raider. Half the reason people loved The last of us is because of the visceral combat of playing as joel. Which btw was the main character.
I know he's banned now, but I find it ironic that he uses the exact same arguments some people(me) criticise some feminists for using: Just give us the choice.

Yes, because writing two stories is totally not more resource intensive than writing one. Surely you'd expect Joel's choices and fighting style to be different from Ellie's, meaning you're pretty much asking ND to develop two games to suit your preferences. Well suck it up. This is the story Naughty Dog wants to tell, and if you don't like it, too bad.

Not that I agree with the sentiment that it's anything other than amazing that Ellie is the lead, she's a far more interesting character than Joel who had his arc, but it is strange to see how differently people react to those who say they can't relate based on gender.

If a girl says she can't relate to Master Chief she's lauded and supported, and videogames are the problem.

If a guy says he can't relate to Ellie he's told how unempathetic he is, and that he's the problem.

We need to stop with this "I need to be exactly the same as the lead character or I can't relate" rubbish - from both sides. People are not defined by their genitalia, what they want to do with said genitalia or the colour of their skin. I relate more with Max from Life is Strange than Marcus Fenix from GoW because I don't define myself entirely based those three things.

These gender discussions are always far too superficial and shallow for me, far too obsessed with labelling people and putting them in boxes. It's reductive to the extreme.

EDIT:

This is the story Naughty Dog wants to tell, and if you don't like it, too bad.

Advice for everyone on issues like this IMO - both sides.

And it's not just that, they also seem to be barely hanging on. Where is their strong presence? Their strongholds? They seem like they used to be a big militia that got whittled down by bandits, the government and Clickers and are now much more of an ideological movement than a practical solution.

Not to mention taken down by their own incompetence in Colorado. Fuck the Fireflies, even if they could manufacture a cure, they'd just fuck it up somehow. Tommy's people had a better idea.

Edit: also, if the roles were somehow reversed at the end of the game, I imagine Ellie would have done the exact same thing if she could.

And after I take the class you can piss off with the condescension. Some make it very hard to have a decent back and forth on here. I'm not the only who saw it the way I did.

BTW...I write scripts for fun. I've been reviewed and know I can write a competent story with a little depth. Miss me with this crap.

Cool. I need to stay out of these fan fiction threads though..

Also lol at first page acting like a female protagonist is some new thing. People talking about Horizon, but completely forgeting Tomb Raider. How about Mirrors Edge? Metroid? Bayonetta? Bloodrayne? Recore?

Not to mention Ellie being playable for a good bit of TLOU, including her own DLC. Oh yeah Infamous Second Son: First Light you play as Fetch.

Shit's about to get dark

"Get" dark?

And he
ages 10 years in the game
- so?

I'm not a female, nor am I a teenager - so that makes me not relate to Ellie and makes me uninterested in playing as her. Noctis is a male - which I am also - but I'm not 20. But I love anime, fantasy games and action games, so therefore he's a very relatable, likeable character to me. Ellie is a whiny, stubborn, too-cool-for-school, grungy teenager that has a chip on her shoulder and if I played The Last of Us Part II, I'd be forced to only play as her.

That doesn't seem very interesting, fun, worthwhile or a good way to spend my entertainment time.

This dude just said he can't relate to Ellie because she's female but feels a great connection to Noctis because he loves anime.

i can't

I'm happy with that. The winter portion was the best part of the original. There's a lot more character development potential going forward for her than there is for Joel--his arc was well fleshed out in the first game.
