The Last of Us Part II announced

I like the look on their faces when "that person" plays the guitar:

.....and then when they see it's Ellie:

All smiling :') Huber and Bossman still in shock :'D

So in the latest GameInformer podcast, apparently Neil Druckmann went back to work almost immediately after Uncharted 4 on TLOU Part II.

Must have thought of something great during Uncharted 4's development or something to jump straight back in. Hopefully he doesn't burn himself out, like Strayley has though, really do love his work.

What I would like is some "young Joel" sections ala young Vito from The Godfather part 2- if the theme of this game is hate, seeing Joel's life as a hunter could make a worthwhile parallel to Ellie's story.
Yea, but how young could you make Joel? Early 30's? The time leap in Godfather 2 was so striking because of age and era difference. Young Joel couldn't be that much more different than Joel in the first game.

I can still foresee similarities to the Godfather movies though. In the first movie, Michael Corleone acted organically and out of duty to his family. In the second movie, everything around him crumbled because of his greed and avarice. I can see a similar tragic arc in this sequel with Joel. Especially since Druckmann emphasized that the theme would be "hate."

I still would very much like to learn more about Ellie's mom (Anna) and her early days during the creation of the Fireflies. It really did seem like they were building up more intrigue surrounding that character at certain points in the first game's campaign, and especially Left Behind. That Dark Horse comic book easter egg in Uncharted 4 gives me hope that Anna's actions in the past could play a significant role in the current story.

On that note, we don't even know anything about Ellie's biological father. Did he die? was he just some rando? a fellow Firefly like Marlene and Anna? ... maybe a threat? Would be interesting if he somehow floated back into her life after all these years.

You could also use that scenario to further explore the theme of hate/resentment, via the failings of two contrasting father figures: the one who abandoned her since birth, and the other who betrayed her trust in the name of love. Not at all necessary to introduce that element, but the possibilities have potential.

2 Years Away still i think.Jesus.First God of war and now this. This was one of the most perfect trailers i have ever seen. That Song is on the loop.

THE ONLY THE LAST OF US PART II GAME THEORY YOU NEED TO KNOW - THE THESEUS THEORY

I haven't seen anyone talking about the THESEUS poster? I think she might have a point
I was with her almost the whole way through, but her ending was a no for me. I can't imagine that Joel
kills himself after ALL that has transpired because he thinks that she's dead. He's been through so much, that would just make no sense to his character
.

It might just be very loosely based on the myth.

Either way, this theory seems way more plausible to me than the others that have been floating around.

I guess I should play the first game sometime. I've played the first hour or so, never really caught my attention.

The hour or so post the opening is by far the worst part of the game, once past Boston the game just keeps getting better and better, I'd play to at least past Bill's Town, if it's still doing nothing, it's probably not for you.

Sarah dying in Joel's arms didn't caught your attention? I was completely hooked after that.

Good to know, thank you.

It was an emotional note, not somethnig that said keep playing the game.

The one theory that I keep seeing floating around is that Joel is actually dead and that's why Ellie wants revenge. I don't want this to be true but if it is, then ND needs to come out and just say it is so, or at least make it clear at the beginning of the game. It'd be sort of lame if they tried to pull a "twist" with that idea.

Where did all the speculation of Joel's death come from and why? It's only a teaser.

I'm of the mind that alot of the story will revolve around Joel trying to cover up much of the events from Utah. That, to me, sounds like a more interesting direction for the story to take, rather than the game featuring Joel as a disembodied id for Ellie. Going by this clip, one could surmise that he ends up being browbeaten into this journey by Ellie. One thing I really hope happens is for Joel to make his pilgrimage back to his old home in Texas, similar to Caesar returning to his old home in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I think there's the potential for some interesting dynamics to unfold there.

Also, will this clip even be in the final game? Most announcement trailers are used as advertising vehicles and don't reflect the final product. The Batman Arkham games spring to mind -- particularly Arkham City and Arkham Knight, both of which had slickly produced reveal trailers that were never included in the actual game.

As far as the release date goes, what would be the best ballpark figure to place it at, if we're using past games release windows and trade show presentations as a predictor? They used the 2013 E3 Show to help promote its launch, but wasn't the game first unveiled at the 2011 E3 Show? So I figure that Naughty Dog unveils gameplay footage at the upcoming 2017 E3 Show, and then continue that up at the Tokyo Game Show later that year, and then hopefully release Last of Us 2 in the summer or fall of 2018. What's the longest stretch of time between one of their previous game's announcement and release? Wasn't Uncharted 3 announced in December 2010 and released in October the following year?

The speculation about Joel being dead comes from his appearance in the trailer being a bit out of character. You wou,d expect him to be alarmed by a house full of dead people, and not walk in calmly. His body language kinda hints at him being 'released from those worries', which could mean he's dead. Also, th vengefulness of Ellie could suggest she has lost someone dear to her, possibly Joel. That's why people think Joel could be dead.

I think fall 2018 is a possibility. We should keep in mind that UC4 had a difficult dev cycle, so TLOU2 should in principle be doable in less than that game. Fall 2018 means 2.5 years after UC4, which is a possibility if the project goes along smoothly (there is no new gen to make things difficult either).

I like how plain looking Ellie is. That's a female character you can relate to.

Never seen anything so stupid as expecting us to feel sorrow for a woman who's had her tits hanging out all game.

But is this clip even going to be in the final trailer? The whole clip of Ellie playing the guitar, with the blood and dust coming from her hands as she strums the guitar seems more stylistically suited for an ad campaign than the actual game. They could end up retooling the scene in the actual game, but I'm not really taking anything in that trailer at face value.

Since the apparent theme in this game is "hate", perhaps the hatred that will unfold will be between Ellie and Joel if the circumstances from the previous game comes to light, paricularly with regard to Marlene, whom she seemed close to in the first game. There was alot of hatred going on in the first game, and I expect the same level of brutal violence to play out in part II. So if ND is aiming to subvert any unique, outlying themes from the first game, I think it would be the bond that developed between Joel and Ellie. That's my take at least.

Of course we don't know if this segment will be in the game, but that shouldn't matter. A trailer, be it a part of the game or just a teaser trailer, should hint at themes of the game, and in that regard it is possible to speculate about Joel's behaviour and what that says about his role in the game. It is definitely just speculation, of course. The theme of hate being the hate between Joel and Ellie is possible, but I think the trailer specifcally shows Ellie mass murdering fireflies, while not seeming angry at Joel. She says "I am going to find and I am going to kill every last one of them", which would fit better if aimed at the fireflies than at Joel.

Edit: It is true than TLOU's trailers didn't pan out thematically, now that I think about it, so it definitely not a guarantee that themes in the trailer necessarily show themes in the game. That said, if we go down that road we must also conclude that nothing from the trailer can be used for speculation, which is kinda boring. To me it seems more logical to use the trailer at face value for speculation (this is an important distinction, mind) than to assume the trailer doesn't represent the game in any way.

Thats the feeling i have as well. The reveal trailer from last of us also wasnt in the final game.

Uh, what? Joel is a man who have maimed and killed people for over 20 years (he even was a hunter before the events in TLOU), why would he be alarmed and shocked that Ellie offed 3 people in some house? It's not like Ellie haven't killed before, she's murdered a bunch of people since she was 14 in TLOU. It's also very clear he isn't completely ignoring it, he asks her how she's feeling and questions her if she's sure about what she's doing, which is him recognizing her as an independent person and not him being dead and in her head (having the trailer focus on Ellie and not showing Joel's face is also ND highlighting that Ellie is the protag + ND basically saving Joel's reveal for later).

Where did all the speculation of Joel's death come from and why? It's only a teaser.

This to me seems very likely, their relationship has deteriorated since part 1 and Ellie is now on some revenge crusade and Joel is basically stringing only because she thinks Joel owes her that and/or because Joel cares for her and don't want her to fall in harm's way.

That is true, though Joel does develop a deep caring for Ellie, which has been shown in TLOU to make him worry about her. That is the reason why I believe Joel's calmly walking into a house where clearly Ellie has had a fight is out of character: in my opinion he should be much more worried. Also, I think in the trailer he says "what are you doing, kiddo? Are you really going to go through with this?", which indicates to me that he is more focused on the acts Ellie seems to be committing rather than on her well-being, which he does not seem to give attention to. But maybe you heard "how are you doing, kiddo?"?

Not sure if anyone said this before,
But I believe the only reason he got the tattoo is to cover up her bite mark

Trailer was amazing, can't wait.

Anecdotally ND still has a very lean development pace, but Uncharted 4 throws everything outta whack in terms of their analysing their timeline for the simple reason we don't know many things out of Amy Hennig's Uncharted was scrapped/kept to make A Thief's End.

What we know of Uncharted 4's development:
- At least 8 months of mocap work wasted
- Development went back to pre-production as characters are recasted/story rewitten.
- Components from previous version remain, such as Nate's brother & pirate theme.
- Pacing was a key component reworked, as Neil/Bruce cited that as one key thing changed from Amy Hennig's version where they said the old version had some maps so big it affected pacing
- Vertical slice only came together around PSX, almost didn't make deadline.

If vertical slice was completed as of Nov/Dec 2016, that means from vertical slice to full-game readiness for Uncharted 4 was 15 months of development. IF, and I mean IF as some sort of bible for ND's development pipeline, then fall 2018 is definitely the earliest we can expect TLoU Part II as per the timeline table I made:

jjNw2SD.jpg

Granted, it's game development so nothing goes as planned and we have no effing clue how different things will be from one game to the other. Will TLoU Part II be the same or different due to the nature of the game being different? How ready/baked are the current gameplay ideas? How will Bruce not being there impact potential development?

So many moving parts.

The game will start with Ellie already knowing and having forgiven Joel, I bet. Like they already had the conversation before the game started.

Oh right, he says "what are you doing kiddo", my bad. I still stand by my point, it's hard to say what circumstances this whole scene happened under with Joel walking in on Ellie like this. Him not asking about her well-being could just be him not being worried because he knows she's capable and he obviously hear/see that she's okay (at least physically, both of them are pretty fucked mentally so that's not something you need to ask). I'm just having a hard time taking the whole "Ellie is hallucinating" theory seriously with the little info we know. I mean, for what end would that be a worthwhile direction to take the story? Just to have some crummy, hackneyed twist that people will/would see coming from miles away? That doesn't seem very grounded or natural to me after the first TLOU.

I think it's also him coming into the scene while fading from white that made people think that he might be dead.

That's too blatant visually, if Joel was dead I'm sure as shit ND wouldn't want to spoil that surprise by having him literally come out of thin air in the first reveal trailer. I'm nearly 100% positive that they made him as ambiguous as possible just to stir up discussion with stuff like "Is he dead or what?" lol

I've never played the first game but have wanted to for awhile. I still have my ps3 but don't have a PS4 yet (have a PC and Xbox One so far).

Is it worth playing the ps3 release at this point? It's only $10 at Gamestop. I heard the performance of the ps3 release is lacking. How bad is it? I'm pretty sensitive to frame rate dips and jank if that matters.

Or wait till I get a PS4 and play the remaster?

Not digging Ellie's design at all. It's funny she looks nothing how i pictured her next gen makeover looking like, especially at 19 years old. Her hair is short and doesn't look right for that age, the tattoo is so out of the blue that it feels trashy for some reason. If Ellie in the first game was supposed to be a tomboy then she is x1000 in this game

I know she's supposed to be older but damn, what a drastic change.

Wait, the remaster is worth it and the added resolution and framerate is sublime.
