Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

12AM just got home so only some quick fire thoughts. Loved the movie. Loved the grimness of it all, perfectly illustrated the overwhelming power of The Empire and how it oppresses everyone. Loved all the Vader scenes, especially the one where he gets out if his pod, and of course that final scene. CGI Tarkin was just awkward, didn't work for me. CGI Leia looked better, I guess because she has smoother skin and it is easier to work with in CGI.

But mostly I loved how bleak the ending on the planet and on the flagship itself was.

Another thing I appreciated was how the score simultaneously sounded like SW and sounded completely different. Very well done for the first non-Williams score.

There are some downsides, but mostly everything worked really well for me, enjoyed it a lot.

Just got back. Fun movie, but I had hoped for something more, I don't know, desperate and grittier maybe. Could have done with a bit less flying all over the place also, giving some more breathing room.

But Jyn and K2(?) stole the show.
Too bad we won't see them anymore, but that comes with the story of course.

Edit: Tarkin was CGI? Now that I know I kind of could see it I guess. But didn't notice it at all when just watching the movie.

Seeing it tomorrow and so happy about the Vader scenes (albeit short).

Also happy to hear The Empire is a real force in this movie, instead of the paper tiger they are portrayed in Rebels.

Captain Antilles isn't Wedge. That's a different character, Captain Antillies is:
latest

He appeared in ROTS and A New Hope

Just got home from seeing the movie. Its a great film. Pretty well made. Is it a story that needed to be told? Debatable. But it was good, if a bit grim in the end.

Oh and by god the 3D was bad. So many flat backgrounds and structures.

These positive impressions. <3

Going to ignore any and all posts related to this movie starting now. Not even opening reddit or Facebook just in case some shit goes down and I get spoiled.

Just watched it. Enjoyed it.

Man, the cgi must be expensive as hell for the cgi faces of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.

This is the 3rd time this year they used this tech. RDJ in Civil War and Anthony Hopkins in Westworld.

He's the main proponent that voted to attack at the council. He's probably bored at the council's inaction. He saw an opportunity in Scariff.

He want fight, he gets fight!

Saw it tonight in a full theatre which is surprising given it's the artsy/independent films cinema. They're also the only cinema that passes movies in their original language.

I LOVED it. Blew past all my wildest expectations for this movie. Non stop action, great set pieces, space battles (I had the greatest smile on my face during the battle) and the Darth Vader scenes were effing awesome.

I thought Tarkin's CGI face was impressive despite being somewhat noticeable.

Stuckman complains in his review that there wasn't enough Vader in the movie but I disagree. It's fucking Darth Vader, the last scene shows very well what would had happened if he got involved first hand.

K2-SO was great and I'm happy to have picked up his Lego figure to compliment my Griveous.

Can't wait to see it again!

Absolutely loved the movie. But i guess i'm super biased. Star Wars kinda means the world to me, so unless it's a rather heartless fuck-up like the prequels were, but rather a competently made movie in a Fantasy / Sci-Fi universe i feel at home, it's gonna rank highly for me.

Did i miss any "cameos" / "callbacks" beyond:

The cantina thugs from Mos Eisley bumping into Jyn.
Gold One
Red One - i loved how they added both of them.

Was there a Rebels cameo?

the fact that Whittaker's character played such a short and rather minor role was a true surprise. The trailers didn't give all that much away, really.

The ending gave me huge Serenity vibes. Important transmission, government official, a last stand.

General Syndulla shout out at Yavin base.

Chopper at Yavin base supposedly

The ghost at the battle of Scarif.

i was expecting to see the ghost or Chopper, but sadly i didn't spot them.

oh, also THANK GOD they
(Jyn and Cassian) didn't kiss
in the end. Would've felt totally forced.

Just saw it too, couldn't describe it better as you did.
My first impressions right after seeing the movie - I loved it!

What a weird movie. Tonally all over the place, going from strange pseudo middle-east war imagery back to slap stick and then to the bad kind of fan service (compared to the somewhat decent one in TFA). The Vader scene had no purporse, the
CGI actors are technically great feats
but simply not convincing still. Bits and pieces are cool, but I guess particularly the characters didn't hold it together for me. Whitacker could have been cool, if he didn't
die so quickly.
I liked that in the end
they all died though.

The vader scene had a prulpose - TO BE FRIGGING AWESOME.

When he boarded, I was basically crossing my fingers hoping he was going to wreck things. And he did. he was so menacing, did the OT proud. The fear and desperation of the rebel soldiers caught in a dead-end.... it was terrifying. That one scene did miles more for showing the villain i grew up loving than the whiny Anakin from Revenge of the Sith.

One of the things that stood out to me was Vader's voice. There were moments in the scene where he sounded exactly like he did in the OT, but for the most part he sounded a little off. Not too surprising given that James Earl Jones is much older now and he still sounded great, just threw me off a bit.

Fucking weird film. Felt like watching a Dark Horse comic brought to life. Really pretty and Jones and Mikkelsen were great. But it was this crazy blend of nostalgia and bad genre tropes.

Just got back... wow.

It's not perfect (too long and convoluted in parts IMO) but that third act.. holy fuck. The 12 year old in me had an absolute blast.

Jyn is a little wooden throughout but the rest of the cast were great.

I think this has retroactively improved IV for me, kudos to Edwards and the rest involved.

Just came out of a screening.

Clunky as fuck. Dialogue felt forced, motivations and the formation of Rogue One was poorly planned(effect of reshoots? redrafts?).

Was hoping to love and root for this band of kamikaze heroes, and instead I kind of disliked most of them outside of the droid. The planning for how they form together just again, felt clunky and lacked a real connective tissue. This was no band of brothers and it was difficult to ever really get behind their motivations or quirks.

The villain was never really menacing, but yet another loud and obnoxious fuckup. A real shame given how incredible he appeared in the initial trailer(which was all cut footage).

Finale was indeed amazing and had me choking up with pure glee, but 90% of the movie left me either annoyed or a bit bored. Lots of action, lots of explosions, didn't really find myself caring much through the clutter. I had higher hopes...

Okay... Just came back from seeing the movie, some thoughts...

It actually took me 30-45 minutes to really get into the movie. Especially the beginning was all over the place. I didn't like how the
imperial pilot and the bombshell information he had
were introduced.
Forest Whitakers character had so little screen time, you wonder why he was even there and his
mind reading alien thingy was kinda stupid
I just didn't like the way the character was used.

A general problem of the movie in my opinion: Most of the characters remained flat. It's not like you couldn't get what every character was going through, but there wasn't much development or explanation either. Especially with Cassian.
K2SO stole the show.

The Rogue One title screen and theme sucked.

That being said.... It's a great and fun movie.. Go see it.
When you accept that it is in fact a Star Wars story, an action centered spin off, you will have fun.
The fan service and all the tie ins and prequel moments were great, the landscapes and images beautiful and the action scenes kicked ass.
