He was the lynchpin that connected the final act to everything else. He was holding the pilot that knew the location of Galen Erso and he had the recording that let the Alliance know the Death Star had a weakness and could be destroyed.

I'm kind of glad he didn't just because of how over-connected the Star Wars characters always are. It would have been totally justifiable for Vader to be involved in this battle but made a nice change for him to be almost completely auxillary to the main characters' story.

Yup, one of my main issues with space opera.

Even extended fictions tend to follow the main group of characters set up in the main media (film/TV). In a whole universe only these 30 people win battles, create tech, drive the politics, turn history, ect.

With Wars/Trek it's literally a whole universe of billion or trillions of sentient beings.

The history and the stories becomes incestuous.

I actually appreciate they kept them separate here. The direct links to ANH are fan service, but make no mistake this film was about the battle of Scarif.

I think Tony Gilroy did as much as he could with the time he had to rewrite some of the plot. I'm curious how different the movie would've been if he was in from the beginning.

Really liked Whittaker's performance as Saw. He came off as unhinged broken man, which is a stark contrast from when first meet him. Speaking of which I don't think he would be as broken bt if his sister hadn't died I think he would still be fighting and looking for an enemy.

I couldn't enjoy that scene just because I was waiting for the guy to pass the thing through the door.

"Please pass the thing through the door. We all know it's going to happen, please just do it now so I can enjoy watching Vader slaughter you"

:P

Ha! Felt exactly the same. Made the scene feel artificially long. "Let's keep Vader in this scene for 20 seconds."

Saw would've been ten times better if we had seen more of what he was like in the beginning to contrast how his fight against the Empire had warped him (I haven't watched his part of Clone Wars). Not to mention it could've helped to keep the audience reminded who's who what with all of the character hopping in the beginning.

Vader doesn't need to have a relationship with the main characters. We have the relationship to the main characters. As it stands, the Vader scene doesn't have any dramatic effect. Add the characters that we've spent the entire movie with, and it turns from cheering at Vader's badassery to the audience being conflicted between cheering and feeling scared for the characters.

The Hulk can explain it better than I can:

Given how powerful Vader is, there's no reason he wouldn't have mowed through the main cast just like those red shirts in that hallway. You either cheat and nerf Vader, or you kill your cast off in seconds like they were a bunch of losers. It's better they died doing heroic and iconic shit than running, cowering and screaming for their lives. There's not only more dramatic tension that way, but it's also more emotionally rewarding for the audience.

Saw the movie today. Haven't read anything about it but there was one or two shots of the rebel ships flying over the AT-AT that looked quite bad, like they were just pasted on. Would have to watch it again though to be sure, but it stood out to me.

Also, I didn't like the male lead. Just something off about his performance.

edit: oh and the final space battle felt a little too much like RotJ. It was fine. However, RotJ's is a lot better.

He was a rebel who refused to work with the "mainstream" rebels because I guess he thought they were too establishment and refused to go far enough, so he got paranoid and became an extremist doing terrorist attacks in crowded cities and torturing people who were ostensibly on his side.

Then Jyn came back, and while at first he was so far down the rabbit hole he assumed she was an assassin from the Alliance, seeing her receive the message from Galen managed to snap him out of it. Galen had just revealed that there was real hope for defeating the Empire, and Jyn was willing to go through with it. Saw realized that he didn't need to keep fighting a neverending war of escalating madness, he could leave it to someone else and there was a real chance at actually winning.

The film should have ended with the heroes, all surviving, boarding the alliance ship, and all seems peaceful. Then, halfway through the end credits scroll, Vader literally RIPS through the screen with his lightsaber. He walks up to Chirrut and says "the force is IN YOU now" as he runs him through with his blade, before spinning into a decapitation of Bodhi, mocking him with "looks like our imperial traitor got a little aHEAD of himself." He crumples K2SO with a force fist, calling out "This is the droid I'm looking for," and then tosses his saber into the air, kicks Cassian and Baze to the ground on top of each other, and watches as the saber falls through both of them. "Let rebel dogs lie" quips Vader. Finally, he approaches Jyn, and says "I'll be your daddy now... just kidding" and blasts her out of the airlock. Fuck yeah, now that's an ending.

I have to add that I thought Tarkin was awful. 100% uncanny valley. I was so distracted by it in his first scene I pretty much missed what he said. The voice was off too, by a lot. Such an iconic voice... They didn't need to show his face IMO.

This works on multiple levels. Bless you.

Why would you think there was ever a torture interrogation scene in the first place? The mind reading monster fits right in with Star Wars. The Empire are the only ones that use the torture chair

Because in the very first film trailer Forest Whitaker is bald, but In the second trailer and film, he has hair in those same scenes. So... it was clearly a reshoot. In those scenes, the most out of place one was the interrogation monster. What else could Forest Whitakers character have done to extract information from the pilot that may have been frowned upon by Disney Execs who wanted to make the film more kid friendly?

Torture Interrogation.

Also, being tortured tends to mess with you mentally... is it just a mere coincidence that the monster also happens to have that side effect? Again, just a thought, but it has some bearing and isn't completely off base. The film did do other things to show how the Rebellion mirrors the Empire in their dirty tactics.

His character and the plot around him is easily the worst part of the movie.

I'd say it's the least offensively bonkers Star Wars prequel. I'd also say it's the most forgettable and bland Star Wars prequel.

It's like Alien 3. It's not as fucking stupid and looney tunes as Resurrection, but I'd rather watch Resurrection because whilst completely garbage, it has some interesting ideas/visuals.

I just watched Alien 3.

That is a horrible comparison.

To be fair, I didn't know Tarkin was cg, but it makes sense because I kept asking myself something looks off with that character lol.

His broken hope was restored.

I do have to say the cheesy version of "rebellions are built on hope" that was in the trailers (and not the version in the final film) was sort of cringey to me.

But I think they did a really good job of weaving that idea of hope through the film, along with faith in the force. The finality and sacrifices of the last few scenes driving it home.

Your idea is some of the most fanfictiony type stuff I've seen in a while. Just, just no.

Good thing you're not a writer.

Having Vader kill the protagonists would have been the exact same thing we complain about with the prequels and TFA when we say that they're "shrinking" the universe. Vader has a small and specific role in this movie, he doesn't need to do fucking everything.

Thank you. We don't need the same people involved in the sam events every time.

Then don't have him in the movie at all. Ii'd rather he not be in the movie instead of him casually killing redshirts for the sole purpose of fan service.

This forum needs to put a moratorium on the expression "fan service" because you guys keep using it in the most nonsensical manner.

I don't see how it's not fan service. What narrative purpose does Vader serve at the end? He's not an obstacle for our main crew to overcome. He's just there kicking ass.

By the end of the movie, the role of protagonist has moved from just our small handful of characters, to that of the Rebellion at large. It's one of the core themes of the movie. The cause they fight for is bigger than any one person.
