Why did Forest Whitaker let himself die? He could have escaped.
Are you referencing when Han Solo said it to Luke just before he went off on the Death Star mission? Or was it used another time I can't remember?

As he said like 5 minutes earlier. "Jyn, have you come to kill me, there's not much left". He was on death's door. He accepted his death. I doubt he could have run. If the others had waited for him they all would have died.

It's said in the mission briefing room by "Mom" after they look at the plans, before they go to their ships in ANH. So a few minutes before Han says it to Luke.
The general/person giving the briefing on the Death Star weak spot to the rebel pilots on Yavin also says it.

I'm a huge "Star Wars" fan but 'Rogue One' was missing some better character moments to really pull me in and make me feel more for these people. I was immediately hooked on the new characters in "The Force Awakens" but not nearly as much this time. I did like a lot of it and I enjoyed it more the second time, but I still think the movie is lacking a bit. A good movie - just not a great one in my view.
Mads didn't fare much better either. The film had an amazing cast but so much felt wasted. I'd love to see a version with an extra 45 minutes to an hour of footage to fill in all of the blanks.
Yeah, he hasn't had a great run lately. I thoroughly enjoyed both films though so he's at least attaching himself to the right projects.Hmm.
Lol it's really not that big of a deal. The outrage over this line is absurd. Worked for me, and SW has been my favorite film since I was a kid.
He said he was "tired or running" or something like that. Why? Why now? Why not run one more time and help the rebellion that was so important to him? He could've been useful!
Is it just me or does his entire head structure not look off? Too long and thin, compared to the original? Perhaps the eyes a bit too close to each other, as well?
I keep telling myself there's no way they made such basic errors but it bothers me whenever I see it...
Edit: added real picture for comparison
Here's a side-by-side comparison from the pics above:

Not feeling the CGI Tarkin
Did we get a glimpse of Coruscant in this film?
for a scene yes
People have a problem with Vader's choke pun? I thought it was totally consistent with the guy who latter said "I find your lack of faith disturbing." He seemed to enjoy adding a bit of levity in his brutality.
In general, I think this movie took Darth Vader out of the garbage bin and shined him back up into the bad mother fucker he was supposed to be in the OT. Heck, he was even scarier that he ever was. He was a meat grinder, and then that awesome as fuck pose as Leía escapes... sooooo good. That was the Darth Vader of my imagination before the PT. I was absolutely amazed without words watching his portrayal in R1.
I honestly didn't need an exact 1:1 replica of real life Tarkin/Cushing in order for it to be a believable and respectable use of CG, it's his animation that took me out of every scene he was in. The actual modeling was fantastic and the lighting wasnt bad either. I felt he moved and spoke with too much motion, the way a CGI character can but a live actor does not.
The first quarter or so had too much jumping of planets, but it settled down. I thought it would have been better if they removed the hints of romance at the end. Good movie overall
Yeah, I was really distracted by both he and CG Leia. I would have actually preferred that they just use new actors for those roles but with Carrie Fisher's recent passing it may best that it was handled that way even though the filmmakers had no idea. Any other actress playing Leia would be heressy now. At least there shouldn't be any more prequels for a while to worry about that though.I honestly didn't need an exact 1:1 replica of real life Tarkin/Cushing in order for it to be a believable and respectable use of CG, it's his animation that took me out of every scene he was in. I dunno, they mapped all the CGI over a stand-in performance by Guy Henry. I imagine they did their best to do the same with facial movement as well. Both Tarkin and Leia were played by real actors who had their faces digitally altered in post.
What? Coruscant isn't in this film.

It's in the background. When Jyn is dreaming of being a child when there is a party going on. Krennic, her mom and her dad are there and I think another persons back. You can see the planet outside. I think it's presumed to be Coruscant, don't know if it was confirmed outside of the movie.

I wasn't paying attention, was Vader's first appearance on Mustafar?
It looked like Coruscant to me and it certainly would have made sense.

Honestly I think it's already there for the most part. I'm willing to bet the vast majority of viewers had absolutely no idea this was a CGI character. Even if you can tell, most people aren't looking hard or paying close enough attention to see it.The thing with CGI is it can be updated/remastered later on and no one will complain. I'm glad that it's in there now for when the tech improves.
Ah, yeah. I suppose that would have been Coruscant in the flashback.
I didn't get "romance" so much as "This is the end. Our differences don't matter any more." And the 2 characters accepted each other and... fuck... well you might as well find comfort somewhere and they could do that for eachother in however small a gesture.
I also actually liked the planet hoping along with the title cards. Made it feel more like a war documentary.
Did not feel romance at all. They are about to die. They are holding on to any hope that their message got out because even if we get down this elevator and out of the base alive we need to find a ship to get us out. We stand out like a sore thumb. Oh wait, it doesn't matter, here comes death rushing at us. Holding hands, hugging do not mean "oh man I wish we had time to fuck".

There were hints about them being interested in each other at the latter half of the movie, it's not a big deal, but I could have done without it. The jumping of planets wasn't really the problem, I should of described it better, but it was how fast it occurred. I know that them holding hands doesn't mean that they're going to fuck or are interested in it
I don't think people realize that the vast majority of people don't post online and put the film under a microscope.Yeah, at Christmas Eve dinner my uncle was asking me about Leia and how they got old footage of her for the movie, it didn't even occur to him that it might be CGI. Tarkin slipped under his radar completely.
I'm not so sure. Maybe your first paragraph was the narrative intention--for them to find solace in each other moments before their deaths--but it certainly was not conveyed that way at all through Diego Luna's portrayal or Felicity Jones' reciprocated smile at his stare. I absolutely assure you that they have kissed or did something romantic in that elevator before the film was editedI didn't get "romance" so much as "This is the end. A lot of choppy editing in the first half of the film. I like how much they wanted to show of what was going on before settling on the main events but they could have done better. It's always odd getting an establishing shot and a title card of different planets within like 5 minutes of one another.
I really loved how they interacted in the film. There was a slight hint of romance but ultimately they just embraced each other in the end. If they would have kissed there the whole thing would have fallen apart.I'm not so sure. That was actually one of the best parts of the film for me. Maybe not from a narrative standpoint but the galaxy has never felt so open. Loved seeing all of those locations and the general scope of the SW universe. Really glad they didn't do it all on one planet. Gave the film its own personality too.I forget who it was in that initial week that suggested "you know, there's not much reason why the entire first half hour couldn't have happened on Jedha instead of like,30 other planets" but I dont' think they were wrong at all.
