Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Almost every game is unrealistic at night. You probably wouldn't be able to play if it was realistic.

EDIT:
Is there any open world game that doesn't have resource gathering/harvesting, weapon upgrading?

I don't play that many open-world games, only bought Witcher 3 recently, but I assumed it was the default way to control character progression within an open-world, stop the player from going too far too soon. I guess Guerrilla could break the mould but I don't know how that would work?

The same as I said before, you are confusing open world games with open world Action RPG and RPG.

It's not the fact that it has resource gathering, it's the fact that it's heavy on resource gathering. I mostly ignored gathering and crafting on the Witcher 3.

Please tell me Aloy has some night vision googles or eye enhancers on... this not how nightfall looks in a jungle:

WTF... this is even worse...

Yeah, I mean, look at those giant robot dogs, they look completely wrong, missing tail, missing teeth, too thin... absurd. Fix this shit Guerrilla.

I live in Los Angeles, and my street is darker than that!

well I assume GG made the gameplay decision to have the night section still be playable with just some slight visibility penalty compared to game like Dragon Dogma where night gameplay is pitch dark and generally are to be avoided.

Horizon night gameplay is more along the line of Zelda Breath of The Wild night gameplay. (there goes Zelda comparison again)

Certainly possible but I'm not getting quite that sense from the previews. Not glowing enough for 90 (+) IMO. I'll predict 87.

Mediocre story and mundane side missions will drag it down from total greatness I suspect.
I think it'll land in the 86-89 range.

It will get at least one very low score that ruins 90+ anyway.

Gah, Zelda's combat and world look really basic after watching so much footage of Horizon. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to love it to death, but it's rather stark.

I know I won't care when I'm playing the game, but It's hard to watch Zelda after watching Horizon.

Holy crap, I've been staring at Horizon too long today, LOL. That was quite the startle to go from the visual quality of Horizon to that.

The Pro footage of Arreks Gaming looks unbelievably good. Here, feast your eyes:

One thing though: He claims it is actually runnin in native 4K. Is that right...?

Just the graphics thread? he posted in like 4 or more Horizon threads most of them if not all are negatives.

He just stood out in that one thread to me, because he basically highjacked the whole discussion for many pages by claiming Horizon looked so bland and boring while Breath of the Wild looked graphically superior.

From since 2015 we knew that she had to kill things to make the different arrows \items .
I guess you could try and melee everything but i don't see that working.
It's all about her range weapons\items and you need to kill stuff to get them .

I believe Uncharted 4 had a really low score and still managed 92 or 93. I just don't think the scores across the board will be quite high enough for 90 (+) for Horizon. Not that an 87 would be bad. That would be excellent, in fact. I'm not into Zelda at all, but I bet that game will get 90 or above.

Damn these screenshots are making a Pro really tempting. Hopefully they give the regular version some love before release so I can make the decision.

Fair enough.

I think it will get close but yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if it does get 90+ though.

I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne and kept it for 1.5 years (also played Uncharted 4, Last of Us, Nathan Drake trilogy) before selling it once the PS4 Pro was announced...now Horizon: Zero Dawn is tempting me to buy a PS4 Pro...I didn't think anything but Bloodborne 2 (or another From Software exclusive) would get me to buy another console

game looks gorgeous expected

a little disappointed that there's only 25 machines
i suppose that's an okay number but i'm just greedy and want to play against more robots

Check out Nioh if you haven't.

If you like Bloodborne then you can definitely do Nioh as a bonus with Horizon.

yup, I've had my eye on that for awhile now...I'm expecting that to be great but Zero Dawn is taking full advantage of the Pro with it's native 4k support and not some upscaled patch so it should look more spectacular from a visual standpoint then Nioh

But then you purchase things off merchants instead? (I'm not that far into W3 so am I missing something else about progressing without crafting?) And it looks as though Horizon has merchants too.

She does have a device which modifies her vision, so could explain it with that, but as others have said probably just them going with fun over realism. I do wish more games made it get real dark at night though, It can make for some incredibly tense moments, and I think it'd look incredible in Horizon with all the massive glowing machines roamimg around.

Most of the footage today from the OG version .
So that should not be hard to do .
The majority of the preview footage is from the regular PS4.

Edit: beaten like me after fighting a thunderjaw

Wow, GG are truly amazing. Thanks for the info.

You need to gather things in order to craft traps, potions and ammo upgrades (huh, if that isn't more like Far Cry, dunno what is).

Watching the video on the official PS YouTube and HUD options seem to be Always On, Dynamic, and Custom. It looks like Always On was on by default. I believe one of the videos I saw earlier showed the HUD elements fading out, so that was most likely on dynamic.

See there's an extra option to drill down into with the Custom HUD.

"Horizon has a dynamic HUD and you can even customize it to your liking, in terms of what you want to have visible or not."
Mad happy about that. KZSF owl hud was horrible and wasted way too much screen real estate.
KZSF HUD was minimal and low opacity.

This makes me realize W3 is another FC's clone. You can craft potions, dedocation, bombs, oils, and even the ingredients to make armor/weapon. Lesson learned today, FC= the grandfather of these type of gathering and crafting.

This is like talking to a wall.

Go ask Brandon Jones why he named Far Cry Primal instead of The Witcher 3. I doubt he'll say they are interchangeable.

Good day everyone, see you on launch day.

PS: I have my estimation at 86 metacritic.

Can't believe my Internet was down for half a day , just before the previews hit. It will be hard to watch all videos at the office , Damn. But #TakingRisk anyway.

Not to get too off topic here, but Far Cry Primal's crafting was...extremely brief wasn't it? Maybe my memory is terrible though lol. But I don't remember doing it all that often, or at least I remember it being a very quick and painless process. I wonder if Brandon chose the right game for comparison there.

That game had terrific bases though. I can't even complain about them.

It's more like it's the face of having this nebulous and rigid menu based crafting system that you use for upgrades. It removes some physicality from the playing space.

I feel open world games should strive towards open ended crafting systems rather than the rigid ones they have currently. I think that's the real issue in why most crafting systems feel so rote these days. There's no mystery or surprise to them. I guess this is just a spiel where I am basically saying "yay Zelda" but it's something I genuinely felt has been a issue in most games with this rigid crafting system and how they make me feel to use them.

Gah, Zelda's combat and world look really basic after watching so much footage of Horizon. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to love it to death, but it's rather stark.

Combat wise, well yeah a game not entirely focused on combat is generally not going to measure up to a game focused on combat. That's why Zelda needs those other systems like Durability and stamina management and the fire propagation systems to make up for that gap. There's also a bit we don't really know about the combat in Zelda though like the ability options that were recently discovered and how other tools will end up being used like rope stuff in the trailer. A weapon in Zelda isn't just for killing, it's a multipurpose tool more like Minecraft.

Visually yeah, no contest. Zelda has Extremely strong art direction and very solid cutscene direction that might give a chance in the movies. But in the game world, no chance.

Man, the wait for this is gonna be tough

Currently deployed at won't be able to play until I get back

Oh well... ordered the CE from BestBuy just now anyways and it will just be waiting for me.
The statue DOES look very nice if you do a google image search :)
