Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

The voice acting wasn't atrocious, though. This was one of those moments where you wonder if these people have ever heard of second passes. Cuz wooooof. Again, gameplay can trump this, but yeesh.

The sheer amount of resource collection and dialogue has me a bit concerned. The Easy Allies preview mentioned a constant inner monologue plus a lot of chatting with NPC's.

I understand it's an RPG and that comes with the territory in some ways, but it sounds like it may be a bit of a slog in that regard. One of the things that irks me most about modern open world games is that the feeling of making real progress is difficult to come by in short play sessions, and that's all I really have time for these days. The thought of having most of that time taken up by lots of chatter with NPC's makes me pause a bit. The game looks gorgeous and it seems like an interesting world, but I'm still on the fence. I'll wait until some reviews come in and assuage my concerns.

"Is this really a RPG?"
"Aloy's hands aren't right"
"DAT CUTSCENE DOE!"

I'll take those as the major concerns over gameplay, design, etc... being an issue. Previews praised that stuff and most here aren't worried about it either. We're in for a good one.

can someone explain to me this "agenda" apparently are pushing they never go into detail and always call it an "agenda" is it the fact that we are and should be an inclusive society where make and females get treated equally but due to lack of a better word stupidity they would rather live in a world wheres males are dominate and the white man is always right?

Their thought process is if the protagonist and everything of significance isn't the default white man, then there must be a hidden agenda, pandering, SJW....etc. They see themselves as superior so if a lead is something else then there must be an agenda, why would the lead be someone inferior to them unless the devs have an ulterior motive?

They don't say it like that of course, they'd rather use dog whistles.

GhostRobo (one of the more comprehensive "preview-ers" I've seen) put up a new video!

"MEGA DINOSAUR ENEMY GUIDE!!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl13gY58bow

This is faily spoilerific, specifically with the
"Corrupted" / "Corrupted Zone"
details, which explains why someone earlier in the thread pointed out that the land looked
like it was desaturated. Each animal has a "Corrupted" version, from what he's seen. It makes them intensely fierce and much more difficult.

Thank God for I-Frames is all I have to say here. Abusing the hell out of that roll.

Watching that video fighting one sawtooth and it look pretty challenging and then in another video I saw someone trying to fight 4 corrupted sawtooth at once, lol

I wonder if there are multiple versions of each machine beyond the corrupted version such as a alpha version like the sawtooths that are large vs the small ones or the watcher that was seen in ghostrobo's video that had a bigger health pool and different attack from the regular ones because I cant imagine what alpha version of the thunderjaw would look like

Robot cheetah that goes stealth and drops mines, sure why not.

Too bad For Honor doesn't have a campaign, or I would have been all over it.

Yeah, that's why I'm not gonna buy it, because I get bored of PvP stuff in no time. Kudos to the devs for makinga fantastic and unique melee combat though(played the beta)

For Honor does have a campaign. But man did they do a good job at killing all interest I had in the game.

First taking out splitscreen that they had initially promised and were hyping up. Then confirming that the only other thing I was interested in, the campaign, was going to be always online.

Does sound like it.

Someone said they fought a bigger version of the Sawtooth.

The combat in this game look so good .
Can't wait to get my hands on it .

Not a fan of the ubisoft open world style towers too, because they made them completely absent of challenge to climb.

.

Regarding this, The towers are now an environmental puzzle in itself, as you can see in the previews. The challenge is to find your way to the tallneck through the environment, its not just simple grab and climb.

But all you have to do is one minor jump and Aloy has no consistent Jump arc so magnet hands save you 90% of the time. There's not much to it. They could build on it by building a wall of enemies in paths. But I doubt they'll do that and once you're on the Tallneck which should be the exciting part, it's over.

there's at least 4 so far

Cauldron RHO

Cauldron ZETA

Cauldron PSI

Cauldron Sigma

my assumption is that you clear out the dungeon/cauldron to gain the ability to hack certain machines. for example, it seems that if you finish cauldron PSI, you unlock the ability to hack Strider, the horse looking machine.
This is cool I seen another one call Cauldron Xi for the Bellowback.

I think what he means is that you have to find a suitable spot in the environment to get to a height that is slightly above the tallneck's legs before you can start to ascend the tallneck. Given that the tallneck is always on the move, i think it represents a slight variation to that formula of finding a static tower to ascend.

I hold my expectation check on Cauldron/Dungeon.
Any info on those are just regular cave or proper RPG maze dungeon? Because PS Access footage seems like just a cave.

If you look at the previews , alloy has to fight some machines before getting up at tallneck , and i am talking about the platform building she has to jump from. There is auto platforming but its not just simple climb up , Tallneck are not 100ft high nor they have different heights, so actual climbing on Tallneck is rather simple in that regards, you really can't put that much variations in it.

The first time i saw the leaked concept art , the very first thought came to my mind is , can I climb that? , and now you can but with a purpose.

Why do you think we are talking about it!
I rushed straight there and my expectations were met with what was essentially a robotic dungeon. This Cauldron obviously serves a great purpose in the overall story and were easily the most intriguing and exciting part of the game. It's not clear how many are placed within the world, but they were incredibly challenging. A mix of puzzle solving, intense platforming and incredibly challenging battles with robots.

Four hours was long enough to get a handle on that battle system—and to see that it's a higher priority in the game than puzzles or "find the dungeon item to unlock this other region's content" pacing. I did get just enough time to take on one of Horizon's dungeons, known as "cauldrons," and it offered a solid enough indoor challenge. I found myself in a mechanical sorting facility, full of platforms that ran on loops near the ceiling. I could jump and hang onto those platforms to get from place to place in the facility, which let me either skip certain dangerous foes or get a better position to battle them. The more closed nature of this cauldron also changed the pace and intensity of combat, which made it a particularly feverish climax point in my session

I dont understand how you would know this without playing it lol.

I thought people are only speculating about the "couldron" system. I din't know that it is confirmed. Good to know.

There is only one preview with the "couldron", playstation access , any other link?

Nobody has Couldron gameplay(Wasn't allowed to be shown) the cave they showed was not the couldron,

I thought so, that doesn't match the description and i thought the videos are cut , My bad.

The game director is replying on his twitter right now , so if any of you have questions, ask him. just a headsup.

Aside from the amazing presentation on display from a technical perspective, the art direction, particularly as it pertains to the use of color, is absolutely sublime. This is one of the best looking games ever, IMO.

Looks like we have alot to collect?.

On the Easy Allies preview, the guy that played it fell from the last rung of the Tallneck so it's not that magnetic, I think.
Yeah someone metion that a person next to them missed the jump could have been then lol :p

Hopefully there's a Gorilla styled robot. Most of the dinobots seem to be apex predators, so it'd make sense to have a gorilla in the game. I guess along with that, it'd also make sense to have a bear-like robot as well. Here's hoping.

Dude I was just thinking about that, would be amazing.

I want it to wield a sword too.

I think I spoiled myself too much from watching all these preview videos. Time to hop on Nioh until release date.

I have mpt watched single preview so I'm fairly spoiler free. That's mostly because I am deathly afraid getting RE7 spoiled for me before I finish it with YouTube's stupid recommended videos so I'm avoiding that site altogether.

If slightly better than mediocre counts then ok.

The combat quality curve is not "Platinum: best ever" "everything else: mediocre".

God of War and DmC are indeed the deepest action games by a Western developer, not being as good as Platinum does not negate that.

I love how we dissect games these days
no not really
Am really surprised of the depth of RPG elements. And I didnt know this game had been in developement for 6 years, holy smokes

I know the game focus on bow, but I really hope there is a viable melee build. Please GG.
The skill tree doesn't give much hope for that. Other than a couple of instant stealth takedown varients there aren't any real melee skills to learn. I also haven't seen any melee weapons other than the basic starting spear yet (though it's possible I just missed it) so I'm not expecting much variety in that regard either (probably just a basic progression of slightly more powerful spears, maybe some elemental ones).

Either way not an issue for me personally (bow play looks plenty good enough to keep me satisfied) but I wouldn't go in expecting much from the melee until proven otherwise.
