Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

I'm hyped for the game, but my main gripe is how you're living as a hybrid/native using homemade bow/arrow/explosives fighting these Robo-Dinos with these cool modern arse weapons :(

I mean it's not like you're just throwing rocks and sticks at them. Most of the weapons are at least partially harvested from the robots themselves. You're basically fighting Dino Tech with Dino Tech.

Well, maybe later in the game you get more futuristic weapons. *preview spoilers*
That armor in that one cave in the PlayStation access preview seemed pretty futuristic, so it's possible there's more like that.

That's part of the challenge bro!

Guess I'm just not looking forward to getting my arse handled in most of these Dino battles Zelda style... But yeah, I can also remember during the reveal trailer how you were able to temporarily dismantle weapons from Thunderjaw... This game will indeed be survival of the fittest... Can't wait!!

After watching some of the previews the scale of the game seems a lot smaller than I initially expected. It also has a huge far cry vibe unfortunately.

OMG !

no way.
there is a gif in this thread showing the size of the map.

edit: here

No, the one third is about correct. This gif is from someone who wasn't very far into his four hours. There are other videos where it shows the whole right side of the map. (After climbing on the Longneck.) As he said it is about one third.
And we have see quite a few different zones, so that isn't suprising.

Here you can see the part of the map that was playable. Don't know if everything was reachable that is revealed.

Really like the look of this map. It doesn't look massive. I'm not wowed by the size or the scope. And given the footage in the previews, hopefully the map continues to feel as packed and dense the further you progress in the game.

I'd love it if the game ended up being a tight, refined open world that served as a collection of cool sandbox locations to fight in.

Agreed.

It is big in its own right but not necessarily "woah, that is huuuugeeee" big. Make what is there as refined as possible and it won't make a difference to me. GG said the map was initially bigger but they cut it down in order to avoid needless fluff. So, that is a good sign.

Yea, it's definitely a good size that leaves you wondering what the rest of the map contains. But I also don't get the feeling that this is a game that's trying to one-up the previous open-world game in map size.

I'm also liking that a variety of environments are available fairly early on in the game. In the previews we've seen quite a bit from snowy stuff to over run cities.

Hmm, that doesn't necessarily mean that third is small though. For instance, you could explore much Leiden in FFXV in the first four hours if you cared to, and that constituted about a third or so of the overal map size. Also, I think the main quest seems like it takes you to points that cover a fair way across the map. None of this of course contradicts what you said, but I don't think there is any accurate depiction of how large what has been revealed.

Also, wasn't that was revealed by climbing the long kneck? Not necessarily that any of those in the preview explored the extent?

The Thunderjaw collection unboxing...I'm not 100% sure I like the paint job. I wanted it but it doesn't look as good as I thought it would, outside of the model itself. Considering I have the CE pre-ordered and also have a Nintendo Switch to pay for, I'll probably skip it.

I wasn't trying to say that it was small. That's why i said we have seen a lot of different zones. People naturally tried to get around within those 4 hours to get a lot of good footage.

And yes maybe not all that was revealed was actually reachable, but we have seen people at least being at the cauldron etc. The only barrier that someone mentioned was something
some kind of fort or fortress
that blocked the way further in the west of the map.

But like i said i don't think it looks small at all. Quite the opposite i think it looks like a really good map size from what i have seen.

How does this map relate to the one in the gifs? Seems more open than I thought.

That cloth map looks stylized, rather than being an accurate 1:1 representation of the actual map. Probably shows all important landmarks and all of the various "zones", but maybe not everything.

I personally haven't any encounter like this in far cry 3 and 4.

for me this looks alright.

told them , but they won't believe me or

It seems to me the game does get some inspiration in Far Cry elements, but indeed the gameplay seems much more interesting in Horizon. Enemies there seems to feel like a threat, they're fast and aggressive, some of them are huge, and they seem to ble able to do lots of damage. I hope it can deliver a good experience all they way to the end, without allowing you be too OP and breeze against everything too early.

Anyway, these elements in FC are not necessarily bad, they're just shallow, if Horizon manages to put some more depth into it (which seems they try) it may be good enough. Also, another problem of FC is that the gameplay doesn't evolve since FC3 and it's not impressive anymore, and that again is another thing that Horizon seems to be doing right... the gameplay seems pretty damn good.

With tons of good games being released right now I may allow myself to buy one at full price, something I don't for quite a while. I'm strongly considering Horizon.

It would have been nice of you to quote me alongside this gif, I created it after all :)

Sorry bro I took it from another forum had no idea it came from here.
I´m going to edit my post.
