For Honor |OT| And shame are huge parts of it

So what do you guys think of the defensive meta forming at high level? Since all the offensive options in the game can be countered on reaction high level play seems to favor defence.

I feel it might only be a problem for the pc version since 60 fps makes it much easier to react.

I think it's too early to worry about it. We need to see how the game evolves.

You can still bait people.

For example, as a Warden, I can fake a shoulder bash to get them to dodge on reaction if I see they can do it consistently, and then use a zone attack to roll catch.

Or with Assassins, they usually prefer to dodge and counter instead of parrying, so a feint will give me a parry until they learn.

Hell, I'd say it's too early to call anything "high level". Getting used to the base mechanics and being able to parry attacks is hardly high level, it's just using what the advanced tutorial teaches you.

Who knows, maybe it will end up being a problem that requires patching, but let people figure it out first.

I don't think the beta was region locked at all.

Well, I got a code and when I tried the site just gave me a "the beta isn't available in your region" message.

I also want to wait and see how the player base will settle before deciding if I get PC or PS4 version. I got Battlefront on PC and that game is just dead.

It was an open beta, you just had to download it from Steam or Uplay, you were probably trying a code from a previous, closed beta.

Agreed. If the devs start patching it so early and often based on every bit of feedback blurted out, it's going to be a trainwreck.

Out of interest, why do people keep using the word 'meta' when describing the game mechanics? That's not meta, surely?

It's because the game is a multiplayer game in essence, so reviewing the game before launch is usually a bad idea.

Yep, seems pretty clear that if your buying and/or waiting for reviews for single player purposes, it's probably not a good purchase.

Ubisofts last big massive hit, a multiplayer focused title, R6: Siege is sitting at a 74 meta.

Did they change how guard break works from the beta to full release?

I can't get past the guard break advanced tutorial, doesn't matter if I try to guard break just as the guy starts the animation, half way through, near the end, etc...

I think something changed too because i usually hit square the moment i see their guard break and nothing was happening..
It looks like you have to wait a split second or see them touch you first.

Timing for Guard Break Parry feels really off in the Advanced Tutorial. I always got it OK in-game but in the tutorial it took forever.

It helped to ignore the gameplay symbols and to watch the animation instead. I recall doing it right as the guard break lands helped.

I was pretty good counter guardbreaking during beta. Something is off on the timing now. I'm missing 20-30% that I KNOW would have been successful in the past. I think I will have to go into practice and get down the new timing if its not a bug cause it definitely feels different.

I don't think so.
You have to guard break just after they grab you. If you do it before they connect with you, I think the game will register it as you trying to grab them. And the start up of your grab must be a grabbable state.

I find it to be a very short window really, because I'll either anticipate the grab attempt, see the shield icon and immediately try to break the throw... too early, and get grabbed. Mashing the guard break button does not work if you start too early.

It's a lot like parrying, but much harder imo. You have to wait a split second. (The button placement doesn't help either, because my thumb often catches on the PS4 right analogue stick).

Says nothing in the patch note about any changes

I saw someone with the Dark Souls III version of the Darkmoon symbol as a banner. Anyone know how I can make that? TT_TT

So cool.

I'd betray my fellow knights for that.

I really wanna see how these players manage without these narrow ass cliffs and bridges. I swear half these maps straight up play in the favor of these dudes who can pick you up like nothing, run 15 yards and throw you out the ring lol.

God my skills has turned to shit T_T Can't parry anymore, let alone deflect.

Also I really should kick the habit of holding the R3 stick to block, when just flicking it in the direction is enough =_=

This is slightly worrying:

For honor digitally only has the deluxe edition at minimum for sale

The standard edition doesn't release until April

So if you want the game digitally on console you HAVE to drop money on the more expensive edition

Seems like a really dodge business practise withholding the standard edition for two months.

I'll spend the extra tenner as I have no willpower but I can't help but think it's an incredibly shady practise

Practice the Guard Break Counter, it's so important in the game. Also, I found it miles better to assign Guard Break to L1, instead of Square.

Wow, really? I didn't know that. This is fucked up, for sure.

Wow that's shitty.
Is there any statement on this?

Yeah changing the controls would be nice.

Taking off a finger to guard break really is shitty

The cdkeys version is part of the European region. Will that matter to me as an American? Or will I not be able to redeem it on uplay/steam?

Make sure it isn't a Ubisoft code? They do love giving out codes that you have to enter on their website to then generate a PSN code

Sadly it is a PSN code. Waiting for Ubisoft support. Wouldn't surprise me if the PSN store won't accept the codes until the update tonight.

This isn't true. I bought the standard edition digitally.

How are servers holding up so far? Any connection issues?

Thanks you lucky bastards.... off to work then I'll be picking up my copy and join you on the battlefield tonight!

Edit: Team Samurai btw.... I had to randomly choose my faction because I wated to be in all of them! hehe... It would be cool to know how many players have chosen which faction.

Are you on console? On PC, sadly, you can change mouse+keyboard keys but cannot rebind controller keys. I have an X-Box One controller and the Windows 10 app for managing keys only works with the damn Elite controller.

Sadly, having experimented with different button combinations quite a bit already, I'm not sure it's possible to swap buttons around such that it feels right. The issue with For Honor's controls is broadly that it has too many things you need to be able to do without ever taking your fingers off either analogue stick.

To free up your left finger for L1, you have to set your guard to toggle. I've been using toggle guarding for quite a while now, and I still don't feel used to it. I accidentally press it, which leaves me defenceless, and I'm incredibly sluggish when it comes to releasing guard mode if I want to sprint at an opponent. With L2 as Guard Toggle, and L1 as Guard Break, I do find guard breaking easier, but I'm still messing it up fairly frequently and it is getting me killed fairly frequently.

As much as it feels weird to have a button you're holding at almost all times, I kind of understand why Ubisoft have that as the default setting. It feels natural and, while you are holding it a lot, good play requires moving in and out of guard, something that seems more intuitive with hold rather than toggle.

The best solution, for this game, by far, will be controller paddles like those you can fit onto an Xbox One Elite controller.
