DF on Zelda Switch: Docked has major frame drops, portable doesn't (no score talk)

I mean I just haven't... I wouldn't make this up. I'm staring st my TV playing as I type this and I just haven't noticed any slow down, frame dips or any issues at all.

One issue I have noticed is my pro controller left stick is a bit weird and makes link walk to the left sometimes. I think it's an issue with the stick. May get it replaced.

Gameplay wise, I've noticed nothing wrong.

But you 100% have had them. You just can't be sensitive to it or something.

Your game can't be different to everyone else's.

Maybe I'm just not noticing it then. I don't know.. seems odd.

I know this would be crazy, but could the TV being used have anything to Do with frames dipping for others? Or is it mainly the game/system involved here?

It's a massive game, you'll know it when you reach those areas cause they perform significantly worse than everywhere else :P

I took this photo last night before the day 1 update hit. 42 hours (well, 60 if I count the hours spent today) and I've barely explored a third of the entire map. Nintendo really went ham on the open-world concept goddamn.

Goddamn, how did you get the Wii U version so soon? I thought the press only received the Switch version.

It runs at 8.8 FPS normally and occasionally jumps up to 20.

Honestly can't understand what the fuss is about... have been playing the Switch version of Zelda since 11am today when was all delivered and I'm 7 shrines in and past the great Plataue and haven't had any frame rate drops or for that matter, any issues what so ever.

Well I guess Digital Foundry and everybody else is just lying then. Case closed.

I have both copies of the game which one do I open? Really confused. Got wii u version for much cheaper, but if performance is ass might as well play on the switch

No need to be rude... I was just chiming in to mention I wasn't having any issues and was able to enjoy the game as a console and not in handheld mode.

I'm wondering if the TV being used could be in question here or not for people having issues.... maybe that's why I'm not seeing them? I don't know

I found the tablet mode just too uncomfortable, both in how hot it gets and its ergonomics. That and the text is so tiny I can barely read it...

A lot of countries broke street date early. I had to bribe my dealer with lunch to get mine.
Being somewhat related to each other also helped lol.

Not many people know this, but the CPU cores and GPU in your tv, if good enough, will join power with the Switch or Wii u, to get you more frames.

Crazy Ken's vision finally realized!

So the game for you is unplayable in Switch docked mode then why are you suggesting the WiiU version that seems to perform even worse?

Read it again. He's suggesting existing Wii U owners to stick with their platform instead of buying a brand new Switch just to play Zelda (now). Both have bad frame drops so Wii U owners might as well save some cash and just buy the game.

Pretty much unplayable in docked mode. I think that double buffering is to blame here. The way the frame rate just suddenly tank to 20 FPS is a behavior we have seen on other games. Anyhow, I think Wii u owners should definitely hold off buying the Switch for now. they can still play this game, and it will be a while until the game library is worth it.

The OP makes it look like it's something terrible, but the video just says "there are random drops, and the double buffering makes them very jarring". This could be fixed by a patch.

Well, not really.

They're not dumb. If they implemented that double buffer, you can be sure it's hiding some terrible performance issue. (like bad stutter because of streaming the world or assets)

So if they fixed that behind the scene maybe it can receive a patch with big improvement.

Hoping against hope that the WiiU version isn't as terrible.

I had to stop playing Last Guardian every hour, because of how bad the framerate made me feel.

I think it's fair to say I expected more from Nintendo. Their games usually have tremendous performance stability, and this is a Wii U game running on much more powerful hardware.

I'd love a patch to solve things, but I doubt it's gonna happen.

And it runs fine on the handled mode, that's not disappointing.
It is fucking disappointing. How can Nintendo advertise this console as a hybrid and home console "first," with botw being its flagship title, when shit like this happens? 20/30 frames is noticeable and a lot worse than say 50/60 frames.

Then they should have done whatever it takes to make it run acceptably, if that means smaller areas and less NPCs then so be it.

The game is already barren as fuck.
The grass is basically the only element standing out, you remove that and it's the return of shit mountain.

how much worse ?? does the Frames drop below 20fps ?

Just wait till people hit villages or other certain later locations, it barely hits 10fps in the rain and at other points.
Plateau at 20fps is nothing.

Played for 6 hours in docked mode and didn't notice drops.
Guess I should've saved some money by getting the game on WiiU...
you'll be pleased in a few days when people get to later areas and they are getting 10fps on wiiu.

Had some visible drops on the Great Plateau when in docked mode but that cleared up once I left it.

No problems in handheld mode at all.

It runs at 1080/60.

I'm 100% certain this is just a bad case scenario where proper time wasn't spent on the Switch version.

It's weird that they didn't put more money on trying to fix this, knowing that this is their killer up and one of their biggest (or the biggest) of the last 2 years. Game was gold long ago and day one patch was just a few minor fixes and DLC menu.
