EA/OA Mass Effect Andromeda includes Day1 Patch, no launch day animation improvements

Everyone keeps saying this is THIS studios first game. So what is the original, Edmonton team doing then? I understand there was a lot of turnover yadda yadda, but what's the main, flagship studio developing then?

Team A : New IP (past: ME 1-3)
Team B : Dragon Age team
Team C : Andromeda (past: ME DLC & Multiplayer)
Team D : SWTOR

I don't plan to pick this game up until it's on sale for €20
I'm not feeling it at all and the dead eyes make the game an uncomfortable experience.

There's an option to have them wear helmets at all times if you've equipped helmets, an option to never show the helmets even if you've equipped them and an option to only show them during gameplay (again, only if they're equipped) but not during conversations.
That's comforting to know, thank you! I wish DAI had that. Helmets never appeared in cutscenes or conversations in that game.

I believe Horizon has a much longer developing time than Andromeda. And having finishing Witcher 3, I think the characters in it is far, far, far less than Andromeda. They reused the character models, like, a lot. And you have to keep in mind that the artists of Bioware still need to design all of the new species and its citizens in the new galaxy. These are not small works.

😂 c'mon man.
If Zelda, Witcher, FFXV and Horizon can have good animation and character design why can't this game? Also about NPC's sure they can reuse NPC models but it should not be too noticeable because that can look very bad.

A shame. It would suck to have spent hours in the CC making an attractive Ryder and just have them go all derp when in-game. :( Has Bioware, at the very least, acknowledged the complaints?

While this seems basically right I think, I was also under the impression that with modern BioWare, they're basically sort of acting like Ubisoft does too with big game launches where they're probably spinning off tons of developers to push Mass Effect out the door. So engineers and people that aren't big leads from all across the various BioWare studios have been crunching on Mass Effect in some capacity in the time since Inquisition came out. And then a ton of people will get shifted to the new IP to get that out the door if that's slated to come out next once Andromeda ships.

People had the EXACT same complaints about how the PC looked in the CC versus how they looked in the main game in DAI, they just don't seem to care.

TBH, after playing/having personally watched the 10 hr. demo played, I don't think it's that big of a deal. There was some awkwardness with the animations, but nothing extreme or out of the ordinary for an RPG of that scale.

I think the whole animation "controversy" is a bit blown out of proportion, but if it's a big deal to you, it's always best to speak with your wallet : )

It's hardly blown out
If a game is about dealing with social interaction and is unable to deliver basic emotions, it's a complete failure.

If you just want to shoot at shit all day, Battlefield or Call of Duty is on sale now

I actually thought it was just fine in Inquisition, surprisingly enough! lol Most probably because the facial animations in Inquisition weren't quite as... well, bad, as Andromeda seems to be at times (some times? A lot of the time?) Also, at least the primary Inquisition characters - including the Inquisitor - didn't suffer from a case of dead eyes. :/

I'm still going to get my hands on this game, but with a bit more caution now. I will definitely wait for reviews though.

Edit: Scratch that, new IP.

Did they announce if they plan to patch in more options for character creation in the future? That's a big reason for me to hold off from buying.

Yeah, that kind of scenario is also highly likely happened. But at the end of the day, there should be the one in charge of everything that gave the green light of the final product. But then again, he/she is also restrained to EA's budget and deadline so it's not like the head has got a choice to delay the game. They're all so screwed.

Do you guys think we could at least expect a (launch week) patch to fix the eyes?
I quickly/horribly shoved Aloy's larger iris/smaller pupil eyes over the existing pale irises and wandering pupils:

Less wired/more human.

If you are skipping this game because of the animations, you are not a huge ME fan though.

The drama here is ridiculus. The very first ME had glaring issues that were much more significant than bad animations and people liked it regardless....
Copy & Paste dungeons, wonky combat? No problem.... Bad animation? ewww.... Not buying.

NeoGAF at it's worst.

In a cinematic RPG with heavy emphasis on narrative that requires the player to look at human faces for hours of dialogue, it's pretty fucking important not to have a narrative presentation that looks worse than their game that was released 10 years.

It completely removes any form of believability and couple this with some terrible dialogue and characters, I don't see a reason why I should ignore the apparent narrative & visual flaws of a narrative-heavy game.

It's clear that something has gone wrong during the development of this game.

Normally I don't care about a little jank, but there just seems to be such a ridiculous amount that it extremely concerns me about the integrity of the entire game and not just horrendous animations.

Honestly im starting to consider cancelling my preorder.

if you're unsure about to keep the pre-order or cancel it, then just wait for reviews on monday and decide based on their impressions what you are okay with and what you aren't.

The game will still be here some months now, hopefully with some more patches, more DLC, and ideally mods to fix the major problems, so it's not like you have to play it immediately.

No true huge fan.

Look, I'm buying this at some point probably cheap because even though each ME game diminished my enjoyment of the series as it went on (and after the trial, does so again), it's still Mass Effect. It's like if that Matrix reboot comes out, I'll see it at some point.

But painting this as a NeoGAF thing is pretty hilarious. Go on Twitter, Reddit, other forums. This game is being laughed at from all angles.

LOL. Get outta here with this no true scotsman bullshit. Who the hell are you to tell people wheter they like something or not?

Animations and writing are inexcusable and even then, only a part of the many things wrong with this game.

I mean they're not even going to fix characters disappearing out of thin air in their cutscenes? My face is getting tired...

"They're barely showing us anything because they don't want to spoil the story!"

If only we knew.

"it's just Fallout 4 marketing"

"they're just running a final pass on the glaring animation bugs that somehow ended up in high profile marketing trailers"

"they're just confident enough in their MP that they cancelled the beta test at the last minute"

don't ask me for codes
Early patches are always for critical progression and performance issues. As janky as these animations are, they're not critical. They might be high on the want-to-fix buglist, but I suspect the quality issues are numerous and will require lots of time and money.

And the cheap copy and paste dungeons from the first ME were not? How about the incredibly bad combat back then? Or the shitty inventory?

I just fail to see the how someone who was willing to ignore THAT can ditch a new game of the same universe because of something as trivial as bad animation. Sorry, but this is ridiculous. People here are trying real hard.

Like ok, animation is bad and all. Be upset about it. Rightly so. But totally ditching the game because of that? Gimme a break.

So I've only played a few hours. My thoughts are really mixed so far..

I hate..

- The Character Creator, it is complete and utter garbage! There are no options to change eyebrow type, eye shape, nose shape, mouth shape. You have to adjust the presets within the limited range of changes they give you. This is easily the worst aspect of the game, it's Biowares worst creator yet, and something I think affects the entire game for many of us. If I am being honest, they need to update this ASAP if they intend for this game to carry any sort of good will for the inevitable sequel it spawns.

- The animations, facial. Yes I'm going to beat this drum again. While they aren't terrible by any means, I've noticed this only very occasionally. When speaking in dialogue, the facial animations tend to be unpredictable and wacky even. In 2017 I expect a lot more from Bioware.

What I like..

- Combat is incredibly fun, I've yet to delve into the skill mechanics properly but I can see myself enjoying it. The new mobility is great and feels very fluid. There is a little jank, but nothing that takes from the experience greatly.

- Skills are well crafted, I like the massive amount of customisation the game offers for character development.

- Exploration. The game feels like ME1 again in a much better way for me.

- Multiplayer, possibly the best aspect of the game for me. It builds on the previous and then some. The new cap of 7 waves is the sweet spot and I can see myself losing many hours to this mode.

Boy, I know this thread is all about the animations but I need to just chime in on it.

Its ruining the game for me. I've got a few hours in now and I just am barely paying attention to the dialogue in most scenes cause I keep looking at the faces and stiff animations.

Mass Effect 1 has better animations than this, and I can tell by having just played that game again last month.

I still have it pre-ordered on XBL and I'm going to keep the pre-order, but I hope I can get passed this at some point. I fear that I won't, but I'll soldier on and hopefully complete the story as what I am retaining seems to be quite interesting.

Well, that's quite depressing. Hopefully it won't feel as noticeable while I'm playing the game, compared to when you see the clips and gifs posted here.

Also sounds like not playing as default female Ryder should fix some weird faces

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Have you seen the EZA stream? Their character looked fine/okay in the CC but she was dreadful in the actual game.

At least with default, you know you are getting a goofy character.

Very odd the facial animation stuff turned out like it did , the engine can clearly do accurate mocap (battlefield 1) so are they hand animating all these instead of mocapping?

Horizon also has some wonky faces / voice work as well and that engine is a marvel .

I hope this turns about to be nothing in the end, but they have already lost my launch window sale. They did a terrible job of marketing this game. I can only judge by what I've seen and it hasn't been pretty.

I'm a huge Mass Effect fan, and consider the trilogy to be one of the best gaming experiences you could get, especially at the time. I can't believe this but I'm gonna wait and see how it pans out and not preorder. For once I'll vote with my wallet.

Well from the characters that people have made, an asian femryder looks to be the way to go. Those actually tend to look like actual humans,

I'd also say that it's always been an issue with making a character in biowares CC's, only for the character to look really weird once the game starts.
