Sony X900E Impressions.
I recently decided to upgrade from my Sony 50 KDL 800B which I got in 2015 to the new X900E. Partially because I needed to add a TV in the kid's playroom, and partially because I've had a PS4 Pro for a few months, but no way to see it's HDR and 4K capabilities.
The TV itself is similar to my 800B, with a slightly studier build quality, and different style stand. Nothing huge to report here - it's typical Sony design - which I love.
I adjusted some color settings using RTINGS - including using some of the white balance options they listed out.
Overall the picture is amazing. I've never owned an HDR set - and the best TV I currently own from a color/picture perspective is my 65' Pioneer Kuro. That is until now.
I tested out Ratchet & Clank first because I knew it offered HDR and 4K support. HOLY SHIT it looks amazing! Pics don't do it justice - the game is simply unbelievable looking in HDR.
The only thing I'm not sure of is
whether or not the game is displaying in 2K or 4K. When I first booted it up, I got a message saying it was in 2k because my TV was not set to display 4k. This message never popped up again, and after going through both the PS4 and TV settings, I see nothing I can change that would guarantee 4K.
So I'm really confused by this - when I exit out of the game to check the Video Output Info on the PS4, it says 2k/HDR and my TV might support HDR/4k if I change some settings. LOL - Problem is, I don't know what to change.
Anyway - after being blown away by R&C, I booted up RIVE. Again, I was completely floored by how much deeper the color palette appeared. It's like playing a new game. RIVE in particular really popped off the screen - even more so than R&C.
Lastly I put in Nier Automata. I don't think I see as big a difference compared to the other 2 games I tested, but I can still see an improvement.
No input lag issues whatsoever. The only issues I had were the previously mentioned 2K/4K confusion, and the fact that I had to unplug my PSVR breakout box to allow HDR to pass through.
REALLY happy with the purchase - if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask away - I'll be here all night!
