Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

What screen option should i choose? HRD video content or custom?
Oh sorry I just saw that you have a different model than me (I got the X800D)... I don't think I have an option like that and also my suggestions might not apply to your TV. The X800D just recognizes HDR content when enhanced HDMI for ports 2 and 3 is activated and has the same video options like for non-HDR content.

I've messed with the picture settings and turned film mode off (whatever that is) and changed the colour temp to warm, and I think it looks better now

I'm thinking of picking up a soundbar for this TV but know nothing about them, anyone know how much I'll need to spend for a good one that will be compatible with this TV?

That's the Vizio sound bar I use with the 43 model of the X800D and it's the same length as the TV. HDMI ARC works great with it, not flimsy like some connections can be. The soundbar has a custom EQ you can change with the remote (which has a screen) and the sub woofer has been great so far with everything I've thrown at it. I've played 10 or so games with both the TV and soundbar combo and they mesh really well together. It also has Google Audio which I use daily, like 4-6 hours a day with spotify.

Vizio also sells a much less expensive model without smartcast. I haven't tried that but the pictures look about the same.

Well, I set up the Sony X900E, but my PS4 Pro keeps telling me HDR isn't supported - even when I change the TV's HDR settings to HDR ON instead of automatic.

Any ideas?

Does this have anything to do with the PSVR breakout box? O_o

Probably. It does not pass the HDR signal apparently. There is a thread on workarounds.

Yep - that did it.

It's telling me i'm only outputting it in 2k/HDR on games like Ratchet & Clank, even though my settings are set to automatic on my TV. Guess I have to tinker around a bit -

Sony X900E Impressions.

I recently decided to upgrade from my Sony 50 KDL 800B which I got in 2015 to the new X900E. Partially because I needed to add a TV in the kid's playroom, and partially because I've had a PS4 Pro for a few months, but no way to see it's HDR and 4K capabilities.

The TV itself is similar to my 800B, with a slightly studier build quality, and different style stand. Nothing huge to report here - it's typical Sony design - which I love.

I adjusted some color settings using RTINGS - including using some of the white balance options they listed out.

Overall the picture is amazing. I've never owned an HDR set - and the best TV I currently own from a color/picture perspective is my 65' Pioneer Kuro. That is until now.

I tested out Ratchet & Clank first because I knew it offered HDR and 4K support. HOLY SHIT it looks amazing! Pics don't do it justice - the game is simply unbelievable looking in HDR.

The only thing I'm not sure of is whether or not the game is displaying in 2K or 4K. When I first booted it up, I got a message saying it was in 2k because my TV was not set to display 4k. This message never popped up again, and after going through both the PS4 and TV settings, I see nothing I can change that would guarantee 4K.

So I'm really confused by this - when I exit out of the game to check the Video Output Info on the PS4, it says 2k/HDR and my TV might support HDR/4k if I change some settings. LOL - Problem is, I don't know what to change.

Anyway - after being blown away by R&C, I booted up RIVE. Again, I was completely floored by how much deeper the color palette appeared. It's like playing a new game. RIVE in particular really popped off the screen - even more so than R&C.

Lastly I put in Nier Automata. I don't think I see as big a difference compared to the other 2 games I tested, but I can still see an improvement.

No input lag issues whatsoever. The only issues I had were the previously mentioned 2K/4K confusion, and the fact that I had to unplug my PSVR breakout box to allow HDR to pass through.

REALLY happy with the purchase - if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask away - I'll be here all night! :-)

Are VA panels good for gaming (PS4 Pro) or should I avoid TVs withit?

The X930E is looking like a good TV

VA has better blacks/contrast... IPS has better view from angle but worse contrast. So generally, unless you are entertaining large crowd usually, then VA is where you want to be.

to output 4K from the Pro, you need to adjust the TV, go to:

HOME >SETTINGS >EXTERNAL INPUTS > HDMI signal format >Enhanced format

Make sure you use the appropriate HDMI inputs, typically HDMI 2 or 3.
It's silly this is not on by default. I wonder how many with Sony 4k sets are not getting the full experience because if this. The tv setting still let you choose HDR even though it's basically simulated without the proper signal.

Always get a VA panel. IPS are almost always worse. Viewing angles are always overstated. The majority of people will rarely view a television under 65" from extreme angles beyond 20 degrees. Yes if you have it positioned in the middle of a massive room and sofas on each side, it will look washed out. But if it goes in front and you sit in front or within 20-30 degrees, you get a superior image with deeper blacks, better colors etc.

Sony has really hit it out of the park this year. Massively increased brightness and reduced input lags as well. The X930E hits 1500+ nits and 25ms input lag. Crazy.

I can see 3 vertical bands when games are in certain colors. Only there if I look for it but, almost invisible if I ignore it.

So I've got a Asus Strix GTX 1080, and the 49" X800D. With my HDMI cable, I'm able to run 4K/60HZ/4:4:4, but Hitman, which has an HDR options, just grays out the dropdown box for it. Has anyone successfully initiated HDR content on a PC?

Due to the limitation of HDMI 2.0, you won't be able to do HDR10 and 4:4:4 Chroma in 4K60 due to going beyond the 18Gbps bandwidth limit.

If you want to enable HDR for the certain games that support it on PC, you'll need to set the Chroma to 4:2:0 in the Nvidia control panel if you want to retain 10-Bit color and 60Hz on this particular TV. (I own the 49 inch X800D for reference)

Until HDMI 2.1 comes out this something cannot be avoided. It's unlikely that this TV with a firmware update alongside the Android Nougat update will allow HDMI 2.1 support but until that happens if you want HDR on your PC and 4K60hz you cannot use 4:4:4 and will have to use 4:2:0 for 10-Bit.

Huh, I feel dumb. I was really annoyed with how washed out HDR looked on this and just now I decided to crank up the colour to ~75 and now it looks just about like my js8500 in native colour space. Wow why that didn't occur to me before, it looks fantastic now!

Also there is a way to get 4:2:0 12bit on PCs (HDR without banding). Just download CRU and go into:
Extension block->HDMI 2.0 support
and find the option to tick 36 bit colour (12bpc), and now you get minimal banding when using HDR!

Loving this TV now that my major issues are solved.

This stuff may have been posted earlier but I didn't see it, hopefully this helps someone.

UK / EU GAF: is this the TV this thread is about:

https://www.johnlewis.com/sony-brav...gclid=CN7ev7-v1NICFQ0UGwodkUYMWA&gclsrc=aw.ds

Seems like the above TV has a power adaptor? I'm not keen on one of those.

Also found a 55" TV:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and...gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CN_w3Mmv1NICFZQR0wodDfwGYw

Though I don't think it's the same model, doesn't seem to include a power adaptor, just the cable. Any thoughts on this one? Keen to get a 55".

The 55" in your 2nd link is the tv I got last week. I can confirm that it also has a power adapter

It's not really a concern for me though
Any chance of a picture of the power adaptor. Hoping someone in this thread that owns one of these TVs can take a pic. Looks like these TVs come with an IR blaster too, is it necessary to use one? I'm not keen on all this extra clutter around the TV.

Can anyone with the 55" comment, is it as good for gaming as the 49" referenced here? Looks like they're not exactly the same as the built in stands are different. the 55" is called Sony Bravia 55XD8005 in the UK. Here's a link:

Thanks.

So I bought a 55 inch Samsung 6950 or something another and it says it had HDR premium but I'm guessing that it's the fake HDR which I didn't even know was a thing because I'm not noticing any difference between my old TV besides the image having darker blacks. I've configured this hell out of my settings and it looks good, but nothing in the greens or reds pops out like how the TVs at the stores do.

I just turn Live Color to High when I play HDR games. I kinda feel like you are supposed to, like the setting allows for the wide color gamut to be used. Thanks for the tip btw!

Cool thanks. The Samsung KS8000 is about 1150€ for 55". Worth the price? Will I notice any difference?
If you care about the HDR picture brightness, go with the Samsung. That's my impression from what I read so far. Back when I bought the Sony a few months ago, they were over 500€ apart. Sony's a tiny bit better on the lag, though. And in general I have had good experiences with Sony TVs, that's why I went with it.

Is HDR available if i connect my ps4 via a receiver to my tv?

Yes, but only if your receiver supports HDMI 2.0a. So it might not work with older receivers.

If your receiver supports ARC you can connect the PS4 to the TV and in turn the receiver to the ARC HDMI port on the TV. That way you can get sound from the PS4 on your receiver and HDR on your TV.
