NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

That has no impact on Ending E though. They both lead into it.
Wait what? I didn't know this. I guess it's because I got D first? Did you need both C and D to get the prompt for E?

So wait, if you chose to go as 9S in D, but E still happens, that means there are two 9S out there somewhere eventually?

Spoooooky

Actuaaaaaally that's a good point. What is there to revive if 9S leaves Earth?

They're androids, they aren't revived, their memories are just placed into a new body. You could say that each time it happens the original dies and is replaced with a copy.

I actually find it funny that the game confronts stuff like losing your original self, but they take transporters like it's no big deal.

It is kind of a weird thing with androids because they, obviously, decided for themselves at some point to only duplicate their memories across one body at a time, to retain some sense of continual individuality. Has some implications for android "morals" but I haven't given it much thought

The machines started to introduce randomness into their own "advancement" in order to simulate a kind of "evolution" whereby machines specialize in this or that. Pascal and his kind are one result of the splintering of their progress. Adam and Eve are another.

Yup, this.

I just did ending E and the notification popped up saying if you would like to save someone else in the game at the cost of your own save file. Of course I said yes thinking this is yet another morality tale and I'm not really going to use my save files. But now all I see are empty slots. Tell me I really didn't lose all the game progress.

It's gone. Unless you backed up with cloud save.

The game wasn't playing around.

I mean the game gave you heaps of warnings that they ain't joking.

I'm still in kind of shock right now. I can't believe game actually did it. Because game provided this choice in the context of me helping out another player I didn't think game was going to delete everything IRL.

Yoko Taro sends his regards. Future Automata players thank you for your service. Jokes aside the game warns you several times because they want you to be absolutely sure. These games don't mess around. If it says it's going to delete your data that's what it's going to do. It would not mean anything if the stakes were not real.

Is there ever an in-game explanation for why the androids look the way they do? I'm reading through the archive but can't find it.

I wonder what the difference between a corrupted and infected body is (or was meant to be if they omitted it) when you repair downed players? Towards the end of Route C I was getting a near 100% infected rate on anyone I tried to repair, but never saw a corruption.

I'm assuming this ties back to the original NieR, since early androids blended in with humanity. Androids have been around since humans still existed (Devola and Popola being the prime example here). If you're talking about anything more specific though I'm not sure.

what, you mean like the gothic aesthetic, or the fact they are human-shaped and pretty?

The former is thematic only.
For the later, "Made by humans" seems to be good enough a reason for me. (If you mean YoRHa, then both can easily be explained with the "humans as gods" mentality w/ YoRHa androids being quasi-angelic in their dress (Black signifying a subversion of the purity and truth than angels have) and their looks.)

Now you know true loss.

the funniest part to me is that if you accept to delete your save, you get a final "thank you for playing nier automata" message

if you dont accept tho? fuck you bro, no "thank you" message for you lol

So if his next game spins out of one of these endings, my guess would be D.

Despite the fact that, yeah, A/B --> C --> E seems like the canon path, if there is one.

Thoughts?

I agree with this although they could also merge C and D for a sequel.

I think it's cute how there is an in-game vendor who sells you trophies but it kinda sucks cause a platinum trophy is now meaningless.

Not really. I like being a completionist for games I really enjoy and a platinum trophy is good way to signify the effort it takes.

Yea but I mean... you can still do them though instead of buying them if you want to put in said effort. Your stance is that doing so is now suddenly pointless because now you can just buy them.

But from my perspective, it still would be pointless even if that feature didn't exist. After all, there's no actual value to it other than the joy/satisfaction/etc. that some people get from doing the arbitrary challenges. So with that being said, I don't see why you couldn't just pretend it doesn't exist and get the Platinum through orthodox methods if it means that much to you.

Yeah, and I love how Yoko Taro mocks the whole system.

Heh, first and only Platinum I'll ever bother to get.

I never said "pointless", I said "meaningless". There is a difference. If you couldn't just buy the trophy, it would represent only the people who put in the effort to unlock it. In this case it represents both people who unlocked it normally and those who used the shortcut. A dumb analogy would be a college diploma you could just buy with money.

Although, sure in the grand scheme of things trophies don't have any "value". But if there is one thing Nier Automata has taught me is that "value" and "meaning" is just a matter of prospective.

So then you got the joke.

lol yea, I get the joke Taro is making.

So, for my midterm essay in my Media Theory class, I am going to write about this game and how philosophical concepts can be encoded in gameplay (which goes against some of the articles I read, which say you cannot encode philosophical concepts in gameplay).

Wish me luck, Nier-Gaf

what rubbish articles are those lol

So who helped the first guy who finished ending E? Can you give up and still offer your save for help?!

They most definitely had some preprogrammed helpers inside.

Think of it as some of the developers wanting to break the cycle as well. :P

I sorta get this view because other artforms don't have a component like gameplay that is primarily concerned with being enjoyable/rewarding/etc., which inevitably limits your possibilities as a creator...

...but that would be ignoring the numerous examples which do it.

Anyway, good luck with your essay. NieR is a great choice.
