Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

I know it was a reach, but I was hoping for VC or Stardew news.

Will be cool to have he English Puyo demo. My GF and I have played the shit out of the JPN demo.

The direct delivered on exactly what Nintendo promised which was ARMS and Splatoon 2 info.

At the same time though I think its apparent that most third party developers probably were not prepared at all for the Switch and wanted to wait until after launch before deciding whether or not to support it.

Im sure E3 will bring more announcements but Nintendo is probably going to have to carry the Switch this year with their first party titles.

I think Skyrim will be the one publishers will pay attention to more, maybe they'll look to PD2 to see if their lower budget titles have an audience on Switch, but Skyrim will be more of an indication of what kind of audience there is on switch for the bigger budget western games.

Which is a shame really because I have 0 interest in Skyrim, I've considered buying it just to support the fact that they're bringing it to switch but that would just be stupid.

If it was something like Dark Souls I'd be there day 1, even if I do have it on 2 other systems.

Payday is huge.

Yikes. ARMS still doesn't impress me, Splatoon 2 is more of the same plus a new weird and confusing mode and the other games announced for the Switch where... ehhhhhhh. Super glad I decided to wait on purchasing a Switch since it's almost 500 bucks here in Mexico. Saves us, Mario Odyssey!!

What's confusing about Horde mode?

New Senran Kagura. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senran_Kagura

Minecraft is still a very important and popular title in Japan, many many many school children play it, watch it on YouTube, pour over strategy guides and magazines. It is an important title to have for Switch.

Minecraft getting 2-player that you can take anywhere is a big deal for certain age groups.

Minecraft continues to sell like crazy. Have you seen NPD threads? Hasn't Minecraft been in the top 10 since forever?

Sure, it's just one more machine for the game to be on, but it's still a much bigger deal than you think it is.

You mean the most important game the switch can get... You know how many parents will buy this for their kids now? (including probably eventually me)
Anyone who posts on this forum understands how popular Minecraft is around the world, especially for kids, but it's hardly a talking point anymore. No one is denying that it's great that it's available on the Switch.

I'm just saying that it's not a counter to "This Direct did nothing for me and proved that Nintendo is learning from past mistakes, and will be delivering games we want to see/care about."

Loved the format.

No Virtual Console really sucks though. I'm guessing it won't be launching until the Fall. At least I have tons of Neo Geo games to look forward to. Plus Namco Museum.

After this direct, I am convinced that the Virtual Console won't happen until E3 at the earliest. If we don't hear anything about it by then, who knows when the hell we are getting any answers

Here's how I did. It was on the optimistic side, but I also grossly underestimated the amount of 3DS content. What this tells me is that next time we get a Direct, I should really hop over to 4chan and present my guesswork as a fake leak.

My prediction card:

Online service
- Not fully launching with MK8D and Arms; support to be patched in later
- App available and fully functional before Splatoon, with final feature set and subscription pricing to be detailed at E3
(Nothing)

3DS
- Ever Oasis details and release date/month (Summer) (June)
- Pikmin 3DS title and vague release window (Fall) (July)
- One new holiday title we don't know about (Kirby multiplayer fighter)

Indies
- A few May/June release dates (Minecraft, etc.)
- Confirmations of new ports (including some that might have been announced by the developer but not yet by Nintendo)

Arms
- Firm release date (late May) (June)
- Demo (April), featuring only the fighters/stages in the Switch events, but with online random 1v1 (disabled after launch)
- Game modes outside of standard 1v1, including single-player (likely an arcade/season vs. AI mode, not a stage-based story) (2v2 and target attack)
- Supported play configurations (split-screen, local with multiple Switches, online)
- Quick tour of a few stage-specific mechanics, some previously unseen (Well, implicitly)
- One or two new fighters (Minmin)
- Alternative control schemes
- Rough idea of the roster/weapon/stage count out of the box, possibly supplemented with unlockables or post-launch content

Splatoon 2
- New and returning modes outside of Turf War (OMG Salmon Run)
- Quick tour of one or two new maps
- Reiteration of a fresh single-player campaign, but with minimal detail
- Local/offline multiplayer
- Second Testfire weekend (May, between MK8D and Arms)

- Release month (July), no firm date (21st)

Possible additions if time permits (pick two or three):
- Minor OS updates, e.g. expansion of friend-finding features or eShop navigation
- Themes added to the eShop and offered as the first Switch-related My Nintendo rewards
- VC finally acknowledged, but with a tiny handful of releases rolled out at best

- MM/SS amiibo figures
- BotW DLC 1 (June/July)
- Dangling regional releases (e.g. Miitopia in NA/EU, Bye-Bye BoxBoy! in NA)
- First-party Switch eShop surprise (Plenty on 3DS)

Not expecting any of the following:
- SSB (including Cloud/Corrin/Bayonetta figures) (Two of each!)
- Main-line Pokémon
- FE Warriors, Odyssey, Xenoblade
- Animal Crossing (mobile or otherwise)
- Any major western third party (Do Payday and Monopoly count?)
- Web browser or Netflix
- Whatever Platinum is working on

Quick notes:

- Looks like they expect Minecraft to hold the fort through May.
- Fairly persuaded to pick up Arms at launch, though I'd still like to hear more.
- Filing Hey! Pikmin under wait-and-see; I liked the concept from the start, but launching it a week after Splatoon 2 is asking for trouble.
- Salmon Run (Splatoon 2 co-op defence) stole the show. 100% in on day one.
- The Splatoon amiibo function (bring your loadout to a friend's house) implicitly suggests couch multiplayer.
- The SSB amiibo hunt is not going to be fun. Probably going with Bayonetta's B2 design since that's the game I like better.
- Joy-Con battery pack seems superfluous given how good the life on them is already, but I guess it's there for extra pairs that aren't regularly docked back with the system. I'd settle for something of equivalent heft that I can use as a grip attachment if playing in handheld mode, as right now handheld mode is uncomfortable enough that I always play tabletop when on the go.

I thought Arms looked extremely good but one thing that has always bothered me is that there is seemingly a lack of weight and impact from attacks. Not expecting characters to be stun locked for 5 secs etc. but they seem to shrug off anything but the biggest attacks.

July is gonna be crazy packed in Japan.

- Hey Pikmin
- Snack World
- Ever Oasis
- Lady Layton (was this July?)
- Splatoon 2
- DRAGON motherfucking QUEST XI

Could be more I'm forgetting. Think Fate/Extella was also July.

I'm starting to think it'll launch with the online subscription. That would be real unfortunate, but just a feeling I have.

I keep refreshing to get that Puyo Puyo demo :/ I've had the JPN one for a while, I'm really excited for the English version.

Any idea when it'll be up? All I remember from the Direct was "Shortly after this presentation"

I told y'all VC wouldn't happen until the subscription service and I stand by that still, no way it would have been in this direct and I'm not even 100% sure it'll be at E3, I think they might have a direct in august with it there.

Lots of port begging in this thread. (page 66)

Oh damn, I didn't think of that <_< Erm if it's anything I do think it's great how well supported the 3DS still is at this point, I just suspect many here are on the same boat in terms of mainly wanting Switch stuff now.

But as I say, Kirby has a history of appearing late:

Adventure on NES was 1993
Dream Land 3 on SNES was 1997
64 was 2000
Return to Dreamland and Mass Attack 2011

So it is series tradition! And the Kirby games do look and run excellently on 3DS to be fair.

horde modes have been a thing in shooters for years and years. what's confusing about it?

I'm sorry, that was a craptacular Direct. I expected one or two smaller third party announcements. Show us you are getting something other than Indies. You could have talked about DQ, or funded any of these ports like Trails of Cold Steel, Portal 1 &2 (already on Nvidia Shield btw), Bayonetta 1 & 2, Madden, Pro Evo, Digimon, I mean common now.

WTF are they doing?

The Hey! Pikmin should be the new naming convention to replace the "New" moniker used in the 2d mario games. Imagine: Hey! Zelda, Hey! Mario, Hey! Kirby, and Hey! What? Metroid.

the 'ever oasis' facebook page has been updated to reflect the release date as it was shown in the direct. mark your calendars, it no longer releases may 26th, but june 23rd.

Man, Starbreeze can fuck right off with Payday 2 on another console.

lol what? It's bad that people are porting things now? Get the fuck out of here.

The responses to this direct are absolutely hilarious. This direct was game after game after game, with a bit on amiibo and new hardware for Switch. This is the kind of shit people literally always ask for and get so mad when it isn't done, and people are STILL pissed? Yeah, not every game shown is my thing but this was a fantastic presentation that even managed to have a few surprises (I never would've imagined a Fate game on a Nintendo console). I was sure we weren't getting many game announcements until E3, but no, they're keeping things moving. That's awesome.

Why do you people who are hating on this even bother with watching them? Because this is ridiculous.

What at all was confusing about that? It's Left 4 Dead survival mode, basically. Co-Op, try to collect as many eggs as possible, etc.
The messaging around it was confusing. They kept meandering to the point with the in character researcher guy going "huh? what's this?!"

It gradually made plenty of sense to me, and if it supports split screen then I'm excited. But the way they presented it didn't feel very effective.

They had 2 DQ games in this Direct. You must have been watching the wrong Direct.

Those are very specific things to be asking for. Are you really disappointed these exact things aren't announced yet?

One thing I did like about the Direct was the format; it was pleasant. Also ARMS was cool, especially the 2v2 mode. It's just too damn bad they didn't show jack shit of it lol..

????????

I guess someone always have to have unrealistic expectations.

It's popular, but I wouldn't call it a big budget tentpole release like Skyrim was, even if the switch version is an incredibly late port.

No, me neither. But Payday 2 for whatever reason was a huge part of the multiplayer zeitgeist for a while. This is a great game to test out the theory that people want to buy those old games again because of Switch mobility.

Here's my hot take:
Publishers were caught off guard by the Switch's early success in terms of sales and buzz, so they're scrambling to put random games on the Switch in the short-term. (I otherwise struggle to explain Payday 2 and that LA Noire rumor) In that way, the Switch really is the follow-up to the Wii.

I really like the headline format, and I hope it continues.

Also, holy shit, NoA is releasing notable games in July again.

I'm hoping it will be too, only for Nintendo's sake though. They need to start convincing 3DS owners to upgrade.

Well they should have some big things to presents besides third party titles and release dates to previously reveal games. I just want more reveals on new titles and quick updates.
