It definitely doesn't solve the problem altogether or we'd see them running at higher clock speeds still, but it's clear they believe it will mitigate the problem sufficiently to hit their goals. We still don't know what those goals look like from a pricing perspective, only from a raw performance perspective.

The prospect of a diskless system is intriguing and would play into the hints that the form factor will be a surprise. I just don't see how it would work as a mid-generation release with an emphasis on compatibility with Xbox One and 360 software.
Sorry, meant mitigates instead of solves.

They already confirmed a 4k Blu ray player, or do you mean an lower priced discless version?

The only way a Scorpio version wouldn't be better than a PS4 Pro version of a game is if the developer simply didn't try and locked them both in at the same settings for some bizarre reason, or if the game was simple enough to already be maxed out at native 4K on the Pro.

....

This brings up a few questions I've had for awhile regarding Scorpio getting the best versions of multi-platform games.

What happens in the handful of cases where games are coded to a lower spec on Xbone for things like textures, shadows, anti-aliasing mode and LODs? (I'm not actually sure this has happened I'm just assuming) I understand Scorpio is promising to upscale everything to 4K or so but that doesn't change the game code or the assets printed on the disc.

Is it possible Scorpio only ends up with the highest resolution versions of some games whereas other graphical features remain untouched until the dev releases a patch? Are devs going to have this possibility printed onto the disc for future releases?

But yea these questions are what's making me think twice about which versions of games to preorder right now.

Games aren't that static these days with how configurable and modular modern engines are.

All it'll take is a change in a config file to reconfigure. Most of the effort spent for PS4 Pro and the Scorpio will be testing.

UWP also supports loads of configurable options for different platforms as standard, as that's its purpose. You can build the same game with different assets and it'll change config based on the platform its running on.

The power of software makes running on different hardware easy.

I'd imagine that a developer won't create a scorpio version of the game and then keep all the settings low.
Although as I write that I realise that this has happened with PS4 Pro titles now.

Apart from improved AF, all Xbox One games will require patching if they want to raise settings on Scorpio. If PS4 Pro is anything to go by, the majority of games will not get patched. So those games will look almost exactly the same on Scorpio as on any other Xbox One. The differences will be that performance dips should be smoothed out (like with Pro Boost Mode), and as previously mentioned AF should be bumped.

Everything else, including higher resolutions, is up to the developers. Scorpio doesn't do anything else automatically.

I'm secretly hoping that the 2 piece shell of the Dev kits means that we will get Scorpio Design lab...

I've been thinking that could be cool. Like the old faceplates. Snap on/off parts of the shell.

Natural wood.

Woodgrain on the dash. And put a fancy analog watch face on it.

Brushed aluminum please. With green LEDs. It almost certainly won't look like the devkit, especially since the reveal showed the BD drive is on the right side for Scorpio, not on the left as with One S and the Scorpio devkit.

I think the odds that Microsoft would do anything of the sort mid-generation are exceedingly slim at best. That doesn't stop the prospect from being intriguing. In some thread I speculated that a transitional strategy could use an optional external drive for those who care about physical media. Other arrangements like tethering to an existing Xbox One to use its drive would also be possible, but far from elegant.

I'd be genuinely shocked if anything like this happened with Scorpio. I'm betting on a pretty traditional console with an emphasis on correcting perceived problems left over from the original Xbox One launch. Xbox One S made strong strides with much improved appearance, internal power supply, UHD Blu-ray support, and physical size. Scorpio will doubtless carry all that forward with high end appeal rooted in bragging rights over sheer computational power.

What color do you guys think Scorpio will be officially? Black or White? Something else...

What if they just keep the color of the One S and offer the ability to design a Scorpio's colors like they do with the controllers over at Xbox Design Labs?

Its already an enthusiast device, I say let us get to pick the colors, for a premium I would imagine. I could make the Metroid Fusion colored Xbox I've always wanted.

Agreed, even as an option there's no way they get rid of Blu ray with Scorpio. Right now they are in regain trust from their users mode, even with the best of intentions that could easily backfire.

Specially now that their development tools are platform agnostic and allows rapid console releases, they should only try to do something like this after consumers asking for it.

Just refunded RiME because of the performance issues. And that was a game I was really excited for. I had it pre-ordered the past week or so. Looked beautiful and seemed like it could be a personal GOTY candidate for me. I love those kinds of puzzle/adventure games.

Because of this, I really just want Scorpio out ASAP. And as soon as it's out I'm going to immediately purchase RiME again.

Microsoft HAS to hit August/September here. It would help me and other consumers AND help Microsoft's bottom line too. Imagine Scorpio out in time for games like Destiny 2 and COD and whatnot? Could be a boon for them.

Yep. Although I can *maybe* imagine an optional discless SKU appearing later (perhaps w/ an external drive option?), pulling the drive at launch would receive a ton of backlash for obvious reasons. Zero chance that happens.

Plus, realistically, we're at least a full 2-3 gens away from the utopian (or dystopian, depending on perspective) "all digital world" becoming anything more than a pipe dream for the vast majority of consumers when we consider how shitty the 'net infrastructure is across the US (and many other territories)... And how necessary, massive-scale infrastructure improvements are coming so slowly as to be nonexistent in a totally dysfunctional political climate (that isn't going to improve anytime soon). Optical drives aren't going anywhere for a long time.

diskless SKU will happen, when MS is able to manufacture a Xbox Tv or Xbox Stick, with the whole Xbox One hardware inside (not a streaming only stick)

It's pretty easy to sell a diskless device like that

How far away do you think we are from a viable, real-world "Xbox stick" design that's capable of playing *current gen* games? The earlier 10-15 year estimates for discless SKUs sound pretty optimistic by comparison.

Middle of November?

Og Xbox was 11/15, 360 and Xbox one were both 11/22. In the US anyway.

The only outlier was the S, but that was a smaller revision. I'd be shocked if it's not November. I'm not getting my hopes up that this is shipping before october.

August 22nd, no questions.
Shadow of War and Madden launch bundles
(madden is 25th but maybe they do 3 days early access or something idk)

I'm tempted to say
Most expensive SKU available first, smaller HDD later

but I don't think any price point can afford missing Destiny 2

Well we did see a share of 1080p parity this gen already. Though to be fair, the interesting question is if any of the 'secret sauce' promises will pan out as an increased hw-delta. Particularly since there are some spec aspects where Scorpio doesn't have an edge.

Wait, Scorpio forces 16xAF for all games, not just those that are not Scorpio-enabled, correct?
While not impossible, I really doubt they'd force AF for native titles. It'd directly contradict the 'up to developer how to use the hw'.

5 years
Maybe 7 at worst.

Just 2 more die shrinks.
In time for a Ps 5 slim refresh for sure
This will be an additional device in the xbox family. Not the only option

They've already announced it, its forced.

Based on what I've read I tend to agree with Fafalada's assessment. For backward compatible titles it's definitely forced, as that's an easy way to improve image quality and take advantage of the improved hardware without introducing compatibility issues. I doubt it will be forced for native Scorpio-aware titles.

Do you think 7nm will make a Xbox stick design possible? I don't. And some believe 7nm is at or near the theoretical limits of current lithography/die shrink tech.
