Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Crimson Skies was by far the most exciting moment of the MSFT conference. God I love that game. One of my favorite games from the first XBox and made that system so beloved. I would cry tears of joy if Microsoft announced a proper AAA Sequel.

Can somebody give me a hand with how the hell to install the game of the year edition of Oblivion? I tried putting only the second disc in and only got the main game and none of the DLC.

Edit: Wait, never mind. I think I figured it out. Hopefully...

When I was telling my Mrs about the OG Xbox BC it dawned on me that we could get Unreal Championship. If that community kicked off again it would be awesome.

And Return to Castle Wolfenstein :O

Just received a message on my Xbox telling me Poker Smash was no longer backwards compatible, apologising and giving me a free code for Hexic 2. Which I already own.

Tried it, and it no longer starts - generic 'may not have been released yet' error.

Bit concerning that they can take games back out of backwards compatibility..

Probably a problem with the licensing.

::Crying:: Poker Smash is an awesome title. One of the two that my wife and I play together. Disappointed to say the least, espically bombing everyone’s already downloaded copy. Doesn’t even work in offline mode like you could with Red Dead. Hope they can get whatever licensing situation sorted out in the future because Ugh!

I doubt it could be a licensing thing, the guy who made it is a one-man dev who I don't think even develops anymore.

It is troubling that they can pull the BC though. I suppose it could also be a bug-related thing, too. Maybe there was something in there that caused the console to crash?

Stupid on the poker smash thing.. also got the message... and MS could at least search my games and realize I already own Hexic 2..

Sucks, but they removed a couple games from the xbox BC on 360 too due to bugs or whatever.

Man, microsoft should try to get Sega system BC.

Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast.....

just let me fantasize for a little bit.

At this point I really, really wouldn't bet against MS when it comes to this stuff. Wonder how long till we get to try Crimson Skies in preview??

I mean, there's a pretty massive difference between getting Live running and what they've done so far. And don't get me wrong, I think getting the last two gens up and running on BC is pretty fucking awesome, and OG Xbox in particular is going above and beyond. But Live is a whole other beast, and achievements just don't seem like something that would happen here.

And to be honest, if either were coming they'd probably have said it at E3. The only case where they wouldn't would be if they were planning on it but weren't sure if they could, which seems unlikely. Odds are that decision would have already been made.

Man, if the licencing for 360 games is problematic... i can't imagine how bad it's going to be for OG xbox games.

Yeah, many of the studios of that time don't exist any more, I wonder how that would work (Deathrow's Southend Interactive closed in 2013 for example).
I suppose we'll mostly get first party stuff, and maybe games from major publishers if they retained their IP.

I just had a thought while looking at my old Xbox disks : even if original Xbox Live servers are down, I remember that for games with LAN support, people could set up their own servers that could link consoles over the net (basically a VPN, I guess). I wonder if those will reappear ?

The music was by a band, Stretch Arm Strong.
Could be a music license issue.

Thinking they might drop some games this week for E3 finally

No chance. They have shown a tendency to withhold BC announcements in any situation where it may distract from other announcements. There will be nothing today and probably Thursday either. I predict the next BC drop to be a week from today after E3 news has died down. I'll be happy to be wrong.

I agree with this

Hopefully. According to my research, they dropped 5 titles last year on the Thursday of E3 week last year, June 16, 2016 including two juicy ones - Left 4 Dead and Portal 2. Source

But if I expect nothing and get something, then I won't be disappointed, I suppose. Half an hour till we know for sure.

I agree that they probably aren't focused on announcements due to E3, but I noticed that Major Nelson tweeted out the weekly deals this morning, something they normally would do on a Monday evening. So I get they are busy and things won't happen in their normal course but if they can tweet out the weekly deals with gold it seems they could also tweet out BC game announcements if any games are ready.

Is this the longest they have gone without an announcement? I honestly can't remember.
