Metroid: Samus Returns Impressions: "I didn't want to stop playing."

Easily my most anticipated game out of E3 this year. Glad that announce to release is so short!

Fusion is one of my favorite games ever and the internet would have me believe it's a shit game because it doesn't force you to backtrack or whatever.

I like Fusion, it probably plays the best of all the 2D games, but I think a lot of the hate isn't the lack of backtracking but more the directed progression. The game literally shows you on the map where to go next which, while helpful, isn't necessarily Metroid's modus operandi.

OK. I don't remember her shoulders changing sizes on gameboy or SNES.

I believe Metroid 2 was the first game to have the large shouldered Varia suit since the Gameboy was monochromatic so the developers needed a different way to show you got a new suit. Lord knows the sprite was large enough that they could put in additional detail.

Yeah that's primarily what I take issue with. That and the extensive unskippable text, especially problematic in retrospect after after how unlikable Adam was in Other M.

Still love the game though, I usually go with the Fusion suit when playing as Samus in Smash :)

From what I saw with the Zeta fights, I think this game is gonna have Boss fights that will be way better than anything in AM2R.

I think that Sakamoto and MercurySteam are gonna be redeemed by this game.

Hopefully.

The game looked excellent on the gameplay stream. Positive impressions do not surprise me.

Also, nice to see someone actually able to play on the stream! Sure, she died a few times on a boss, but if I remember right from the original game, that's a comparatively late one and quite a challenge.

I like Fusion the best because everything is so well-made. From the writing, the atmosphere, the bosses, the difficulty. It actually makes sense that Samus loses all her powers! It never made sense in Super Metroid that she has nothing when Ridley attacks her. When she visits Zebes, there are these neat underground caves filled with chozo technology for her to find.

I think this looks quality and that's why I'm gutted its not on the Switch :(

Hopefully we'll see it eventually. Just don't want it to be VC style with both screens jammed on the Switch screen. I'd like it optimised!

I bet they could remove the second screen display and make the map/additional content accessible via a separate menu by pressing + or -.

Not really excited about this, considering the last game I played from them was that Castlevania game. Who knows how this will turn out, but the whole 30fps thing isn't a good start. Just because it's Metroid doesn't mean I'll take any thing they throw at me.

I'll just wait and see. Seems like the best approach in this case, given what we know.

Watch the treehouse gameplay stream. Castlevania mirror of fate was terrible. This looks amazing.

Oi, calmly stating reasonable concerns is not allowed here >:(

I was thinking the same. Also I think there was an article years ago about Mercury developing a Metroid game for WiiU and 3DS. I'm thinking it was originally multi-plat and they doubled down on 3DS. But the result might be a game that at its design level has some scalability. Might mean it wouldn't be too hard to port in the future.

I still don't really understand why they've not made it multiplatform though.

Yeah, Fusion is the best. The controls and speed are perfect (Super=too slow, MZM=too fast), the level design is the best I've seen PERIOD. The atmosphere is amazing, as is the music. Even the scenario is top notch (even if it has been made to look retroactively worse due to Other M copying it, really badly).

I do get the complaints about linearity, but there are still places off the map that you have to find during the course of the story, and the secrets are never given to you.

I would say all of this though, as it's my second favourite game of all time, just behind the original Prime.

Some of these complaints are silly:

"30fps??? No buy"
"lol, Mercury Steam"
"Why the fuck is this not on the Switch???"

Man, from what I've been seeing from the Treehouse Live videos and such, I think the game looks great. Y'all should be thankful that we're getting Metroid at all. Yesterday morning, several folks swore to high heaven that there would be ZERO Metroid announcements and, yet, here we are. Glorious time to be a Metroid fan.

I felt so out of touch with some of the reactions yesterday. I was jumping up and down at getting a new 2D Metroid in a couple months and Prime 4 being announced. Also the constant port begging for Switch is getting out of control on GAF between this and Pokemon.

I think it's quite possible. After all, Mirror of Fate was ported to PS3 and 360.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Mirror of Fate 's HD port turned out well enough, so I really don't think there's any reason Metroid couldn't come to Switch... Unless it makes heavy use of the dual screen functionality. I haven't watched all the footage yet, but was the second screen used for anything other than the map in Samus Returns?

My biggest issue with fusion besides all the chatter was how they would put a waypoint on the map to show you where to head next. I forget if that was in Zero mission, but I hope it isn't here. The scanning stuff is neither here nor there for me personally. Power bombs did the same thing before more or less, even though it was limited to the room you were in.

Not interested in playing a 2D Metroid game that runs at only 30 fps. Sorry Mercury Steam.

Really? Really?

Metroid fans complain nonstop about Nintendo neglecting the series and then when they announce two games, one of which is a traditional 2D game with overwhelmingly positive impressions and excellent-looking footage, some fans dig around to find shit to complain about.

I'm gonna buy this on 3DS and then a year later I'll hopefully get to buy a higher res switch port at 60fps. I'll buy them all. I've waited 12 years just to be able to even pay for a new Metroid sidescroller again.

It looked like you swapped between Missiles/Super Missiles and the different Beams on the touch screen.

Zero Mission had the Chozo statues that also show you where you should head next. They're similar to the hint systems in Prime (though you could turn those off). I didn't have a big problem with them though as traversal was still fun and knowing where to go didn't necessarily mean you knew how to get through to that area. There were still elements of discovery.

It makes sense within the game since the board computer knows where the danger lies. I haven't played it in a while, but I believe it doesn't show you exactly where to go on the map after a while.

In both Meteoid 2 and Super Metroid the Varia Suit changed the appearence to big shouldered.
However, in Super Meteoid they were cheep with some of the sprites, as the the side view is the same for both Power and Varia suit, just different colors. From the front it's clrealy visible though.

People crying for years for a new/remake 2d metroid or prime.

We get both after years of waiting and people act like douchebags.

Gameplay looks fantastic they showed 30 mins+ do you really think the game will be ruined by Mercury Steam?

And besides if you think it looks too easy i am sure hard mode is back. And you can skip using those new abilities anyway and still sequence break with bombs and possibly more.

Eh, that's probably something you could map to the triggers on the Joycons. Doesn't seem like big deal. Samus Returns might be Switchable after all!

Looks like the second screen is primarily used for the map. I think it also displays tutorial info when you pick up new abilities and such.

Maybe because they're not the same fucking people.

Or maybe because it isn't what some people were expecting. I was expecting something more stilized in the vein of Hollow Knight or Ori, in terms of art. Instead I got these terrible graphics on a 240p screen...

I didn't think that Castlevania would be ruined by Mercury Steam and bought Mirror Of Fate. That was a mistake.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this, but yes, it's extremely understandable why people would sour on this title because of MS' involvement.

We had someone complain about scanning. There's clearly a lot of people just here to complain that it's on 3DS.

I think I'll remain skeptic all the way until release. I'll either be pleasantly surprised or I'll shrug and think "Yup, sounds like Mercury Steam alright".

All of you better buy this fucking game. Complaining about fps lmao.

I fully expect Metroid 5 on the switch if this does well.
