Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

It would be cool to unlock the original Metroid II form beating the game.
Didn't Zero Mission have the original or i'm wrong?

The days when Nintendo hid full games as unlockables are long gone. Hard to believe that Animal Crossing on the GC included all those NES games.

I hope the background have the same insaaaaane depth as the ones in Mirror of Fate. That was always one of the most impressive games on 3DS for me for that reason, but I fear Nintendo might curb Mercury Steam a bit in that regard because not everyone could stomach having them at full 3D.

Stable framerates (and high framerates, ideally) are crucial to the viewability and comfort of the 3D effect; if this game can hold a stable 30FPS it'll automatically be more pleasant than MOF. (60FPS 3D on New 3DS would be fantastic.)

If you have a New 3DS and Luma you can force the New 3DS features on MOF its a lot better.

But yeah, 60fps on 3DS would be great.

No, you'll buy the original on the eShop and you'll love it!

(Yes, Zero Mission had that. In an age long before VC)

Since the UK version of the SE comes with a voucher to download Metroid 2 on VC it's not happening.

According to press on the showfloor, the 3D apparent really adds to the cavernous environment they present the game in.

The 3D in the trailer on the eShop is great.

The Special Edition in Europe comes with a code for Metroid II. That rules it out for being unlockable in the game.

The music that kicks in around the 9 min. mark is incredible.

Holy shit, thanks for pointing it out. I've been waiting for an official remix of the first track in the game for so long now.

I noticed a remix of Lower Norfair in the first treehouse stream too but I was a bit disappointed that it sounded exactly the same as Magmoor Caverns from Prime... Which is fantastic, but I want something new. Hopefully it sounds different in-game.

Yes once you beat Zero Mission you would unlock the Original Metroid.

I love Zero Mission. As I can sequence break the shit out of it. My best run was I think 54 Mins.

I just came back from my Gamestop I bought a N 3DS and Pre Ordered Metroid Samus Returns Special Edition.

I had a 3DS years ago but I sold it as I felt not many games I wanted were coming. But Not anymore. I did that and I picked up a copy of Fire Emblem Awakening as I heard many good things about it and I enjoy a good Turn Based Strategy.

Is it my impression, or is the item acquired and subitem acquired songs exactly the same as the ones in Metroid Prime?
I think the Aeon ability fanfare is the same one where you get get a Chozo Artifact as well.

Edit:Actually, listening to both of them, this one sounds a bit different.

This game is fucking hideous.

Gameplay looks decent but I can't get over how low-res and disgusting it is.
This is a case of a game that looks a lot better on a smaller screen. Unlike Federation Force, I think the basic art style is nice, it's just the 3DS hardware holding it back.

You're looking at a 3DS game on your computer. This happens every time a new high profile 3DS game gets announced.

The artstyle is also just really ugly. 2.5D has never, ever been a good design decision.

2.5D is most of the time the better game design decision. It's better to judge depth and is a huge plus for 2D games as it gives a better sense of place. The Retro DKC games would never feel and play as good if they were pure 2D.

2D is most of the time the better art design decision because naturally you can make games look like concept art itself way more easily.

2.5D being easier for Nintendo to use with the 3D effect of the 3DS is the worst thing about the console. I'm sure it's played some part in them dropping sprites (almost) entirely after they complained early on about how hard it was to get the 3D classics up and running compared to what they expected, and ended up delaying several of them.

Looks fine to me. Of course it CAN look better, but there's so much worse available elsewhere.

I think the game looks great, actually. Only thing that bothers me is the use of color and contrast, from trailers and gameplay it looks like Samus hardly pops up compared to backgrounds, which is disappointing because older 2D Metroid games make great use of those.

Granted, 3D effect will probably help, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Good stuff. I think art direction is good and animations and models are great. Samus especially looks wonderful.

Never played the original, so I didn't know it was a remix, thanks. Listening to it now, great track.

Yeah! M2's soundtrack is weird as hell and has only a handful melodic tracks, but that one's the most iconic.

The designs are quite good but I am not a fan of the colors. It reminds me of Other M in the sense of some very generic color schemes. There's a bright yellow area, a purple area, a red area, a light blue area, etc. Even the enemies remind me of Other M at the moment.

Those colors fit the extraterrestrial areas they are going for.

So, I'm thinking about getting another 3DS (mostly because of this game). I'm currently rocking the OG 3DSXL and I'm wondering if it's worth it? I know the tech is aged regardless, but is there a significant enhancement over my current model if I get one of the New line models?

If you like the 3D feature, it's worth it. Really mindblowing how the 3D works here. But that's really it, tbh. Xenoblade is very good too.
