Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

Before anyone dumps on Team Ninja, I'd just like to point out that they released the absolutely fantastic Nioh earlier this year, so they're still clearly a capable team when they have the right vision.

I don't think gameplay was the worst part of Other M, so that's that on that

Dumping on Team Ninja is the internet's pastime! "Team Ninja Dogs! Hayashit! They're nothing without Itagaki!"

Meanwhile, I'm here playing Ni-Oh and not Devil's Third.

I'm sorry, Ninja Gaiden communities have left me kinda cynical about people calling out Team Ninja.

I know I am, I even bought that shitty Federation Force when it released (it worked!!) just to try and get a new Metroid game.

It ain't shitty... it's just not amazing. :/

Creator of Metroid II fan remake comments on Metroid: Samus Returns, Nintendo comments on AMR2

AMR2 Creator:

"Metroid is the only Nintendo universe with a cohesive story, with a well defined continuity. People could enjoy most chapters of that story while playing great solid games. The only chapter that felt outdated was Metroid 2. So finally releasing AM2R added that last piece that was missing.

Metroid: Samus Returns departs quite a lot from the source material, and the new abilities seem to add some depth to the combat. It's really interesting to see what an entire dev team can do with the same source material, compared to my humble rendition. ... I'm very curious about what the Metroid Queen (the final boss) will play like. I'm sure it'll be epic.

Given how different both games are. I'm sure many people will see my game as more than just Another Metroid 2 Remake."

Sakamoto:

"We heard about it first after we had already started development. We know it exists, the fact that a fan is out there and really likes the series this much."

Pretty much all Metroid fights in Samus Return will be 10x better than in AM2R.

The counter mechanic is a really great solution to a long standing issue with the 2D Metroid titles, in that floating enemies have a supreme mobility advantage over Samus that the controls really can't keep up with. AM2R was particularly awful about that, and I often struggled with fighting the Alphas more than any other Metroid evolution.

it will be better than AM2R's, that's for sure. sorry but I just can't with AM2R's queen metroid

I like Fighting Alphas in AM2R because of how rapidly you have to move around but up from that Samus Returns looks way better. The Zeta and Gamma Metroids look absolutely rad to fight which gives me high hopes for the Omega Metroid which is the worst fight in AM2R.

Thats why everyone needs to buy this game.

I've never played the original and I'm honestly not even sure I'd like it, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna preorder the special edition for this very reason. I know a lot of people love this franchise and what little I've played of it (all but the end of Prime 1, maybe some fragments of OG Metroid) was pretty cool and I LOVE Samus as a character (my main in Smash) so I want the games to do well so they'll continue the franchise.

YOU'RE WELCOME

thank you! Metroid is awesome, please try the game!

try Prime or Super Metroid

The free aim is such a great addition, I can't believe it didn't happen sooner. I guess it would have had there not been 13 years between this and Zero Mission.

Metroid 5 absolutely should have it.

I think through the Ambassador Program and other promos, plus what I've bought myself, I actually have

Metroid (VC)
Metroid Fusion (VC)
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime: Echoes
Metroid: Other M
Metroid Prime Trilogy (VC)

I just need to fucking play them! I have so many games but I never make time to play them ;____;

try fusion, it's quick.

I honestly can't believe we have made it to Metroid Prime 4 and are still no closer to Metroid V.

There never will be a proper V.
They wrote themselves into a corner and 1.5 decades, 5 side games (soon to be 6)and 2 remakes later they clearly have no idea how to progress...

As right as this sounds, I honestly doubt Sakamoto and company were silly enough to write Fusion as is without knowing how to handle its eventual sequel. I think the fact that we haven't seen one yet is just a product of different situations that have made it impossible to see another non-Prime Metroid game after Other M in general.

I'm also pretty sure they wouldn't seek a partner to bring 2D Metroid back without a plan to what to do next, as I doubt all they plan to do with MS is remakes. Samus Returns works both as a celebration of the franchise and a way to experiment and "test" MS with an "easier" project before making a new mainline game.

I really hope a) they do prove themselves, and b) they make a Metroid 5 with Nintendo.

As to the first thing...they could throw whatever they wanted/needed into the story and keep it chugging. Metroid does string together nicely, but it is also full of regenerating bad guys and bases and Metroids. And it is in space. They could go anywhere next.

A Metroid 5 doesn't seem like it would be that hard to figure out from a story standpoint, considering that it's not hard to see the logic that if there were two research stations with artificial environment generators that were harboring Metroid cloning facilities, then there's probably at least one more out there in the galaxy doing the same thing (though, for the love of god, pick a different goddamn planet than Zebes and/or SR388 to replicate). Where it might get tough to figure out how that works from a gameplay perspective is with Samus being more or less a fugitive at that point, how the setup can be worked to keep her in a single location.

IDK. Send her outside Federation space. Have it all take place on a single day (or so) before help arrives. Have her evade Federation troops like the SA-X. Make Federation troops Space Pirate replacements. They could do a bunch of things.

Could do Samus goes into exile and finds herself kind of thing.

Samus' movements look good so far but I think the environments look too simple. I'm not sure this game is going to be able to capture the atmosphere of 2d Metroid games.

I actually think the environments have looked more dynamic than the 2D games so far, they're only lacking compared to the Prime games imo. There's particle effects, moody colouring, lighting and attention to detail (like how the rubbles move when the boss hits the ground) and you can just tell they are designed to be viewed in 3D which will bring them more to life. It feels very atmospheric to me. I just wish I could hear the music more because it sounded really good.

It's not that unlikely considering as soon as Zero Mission hit, everyone and their mom said to themselves "Metroid II has to be next, right?"

And then continued to say that for 13 years.

Given the gap in time, it wasn't as certain that they'd continue the series in that manner.

Zero Mission came out 13 years ago. The odds of a fan remake and official remake of M2 coinciding this closely is quite remarkable.

I wonder what the extra content will be i am very sure they will atleast add something just like they did with Zero Mission.

I love the subtitle: "Samus Returns".
I know it's a play on Metroid II's subtitle, but it's also like... she's back, guys. :')
Yep, it's a brilliant subtitle that works on multiple levels. Like you said, it's a reworking of the original subtitle, but it also works on the meta level of there finally being a new Metroid game.

AM2R has been in development for 10 of those 13 years. That's a large window for two projects seeded by the same idea to overlap.

Story wise for Metroid V they can really go in any direction. As you said they could repeat the Fusion and Other M plot for a 3rd time. However, I'd like to see them either move forward or move on from that plotline. Perhaps Samus does some investigation on the corrupt members of the GF and uncovers a planet where they have left their experiments free reign and their research and plans are out in the open. Have the goal to be to rid the planet of the experiments that have ran loose and poses a major threat. Also to uncover and expose the corrupt members of the GF. In terms of environments. I do not want a game taking place solely in a spaceship/facility again. I want to explore some alien environments on a planet with a variety of new and old abilities to traverse the environment and take on the planet's inhabitants.

While unlikely given recent announcements at E3, Retro could make an amazing 2D Metroid.

Special Edition is up for preorder on Best Buy in the US. Better hurry in case this becomes one of those super limited Nintendo specials.

I hope the background have the same insaaaaane depth as the ones in Mirror of Fate. That was always one of the most impressive games on 3DS for me for that reason, but I fear Nintendo might curb Mercury Steam a bit in that regard because not everyone could stomach having them at full 3D.

how come the eshop trailer isn't in 3D?

3D Trailer is only available in NA. -__-

Thinking of just going with with "Fucking yes indeed." as the OT subtitle :D
(no, it'll be worse, don't worry - I got u)

They said as much on THL. Without seeing it for myself I can't say how much on the "insaaaaaane" scale it is, though. :)

According to press on the showfloor, the 3D apparent really adds to the cavernous environment they present the game in.

It would be cool to unlock the original Metroid II form beating the game.
Didn't Zero Mission have the original or i'm wrong?

This will be a fond farewell to the 3DS's titular function for me; it was much maligned, but I always really enjoyed it. Added another level of graphical sheen on the level I felt when I put my Xbox 360 through a HDMI for the first time. Shame it's going away.
