Metroid: Samus Returns (Mercury Steam, Metroid 2 reimagining, 9/15) announced for 3DS

So, I'm thinking about getting another 3DS (mostly because of this game). I'm currently rocking the OG 3DSXL and I'm wondering if it's worth it? I know the tech is aged regardless, but is there a significant enhancement over my current model if I get one of the New line models?

I had an OG 3DSXL as well and I got the New 3DS as a gift. The 3D in the new line is vastly improved. Before your viewing angle had to be perfect for 3D, but now you get a stable image more easily. I don't know if that's important to you, but it could come in handy for this game. I also switched to the smaller model because it was more comfortable to hold and I prefer the sharper visuals of the regular 3DS.

Looks fine to me. Of course it CAN look better, but there's so much worse available elsewhere.
The new Zeta is definitely a step up compared to the original Sprite. Very xenomorph-inspired.

If you like the 3D feature, it's worth it. Really mindblowing how the 3D works here. But that's really it, tbh. Xenoblade is very good too.

Thanks for the feedback. Now I'm definitely torn, haha. I never use 3D but I kind of wanted to for this game considering how hard Sakamoto is pushing it. My issue with 3D on the system has always been the viewing angles which sound like they're significantly better on the New line. Ugh.

you can play it normally without being concerned about viewing angles. it's very cool

a link between worlds looks horrible on youtube, but i love its visuals on the 3ds with the 3d on. Samus Returns has a solid artstyle and very good animations, pair with a really goood 3d and it's going to be gold.

i played a lot on the og ds but the 3d always felt like a nice "let me turn this on for 10 seconds to see how it looks" before turning it off. When i finally got a 3ds, i bought the new 3ds xl and i never turned off the 3d effect. The only problem, and this is for every version of the 3ds, is some of the ghosting effects that you will unfortunately see in some games.

last game I was this excited about was Pokémon XY in 2013. first 3d game in the series.

now this is the first 2d game in the series since zero mission. fuck i need this

Sprite based games look gorgeous in 3D mode go look at Shovel Knight or Mighty Switch Force.

Look at the kind of 3D they're going for. Doesn't work with sprites. You can't pan the camera around or have this kind of depth effect for caverns. It can look cool but I don't think it would be the best choice to achieve what they're going for.

I agree that 3DS games always look way better on the system, and definitely when you keep the 3D on. Don't think this game will be an exception.

Thank god it's coming out so soon. Even waiting til september's going to feel like ages.

I rocked my OG aqua 3DS for years and it was good enough, but then got a regular New and it's such an upgrade in comparison. It feels like a more premium product, the screem is way better and the 3D is the real deal.

That's not all though, it's also worth it for the SNES VC (Super Metroid!) and that's not even mentioning the bunch of stuff you can emulate on it with CFW, or the ability to force PS4 Pro-like "boost mode" on games not designed to make use of the n3DS CPU to improve performance, like DKC Returns and maybe even this game.

It is so cool that this is only as far as September away.

Thank god too. I haven't been this excited for a game in years. I seriously can't wait to play this!!

Yeah, this is really just about the best thing that could've come out of E3 short of Prime 4 looking like 2018 and Metroid 5 coming in September :P.

Nintendo's been granting fan dreams recently (open world Zelda, adventure Mario) and this was the time it was my dream. Really quite happy.

No kidding. They've been doing a lot of great stuff lately, and the Prime 4 announcement was definitely a relief, but as much as I love the Prime games, 2D Metroid is my favorite kind, and I thought we would never see a new one again, so I was ecstatic!

playing other m for the first time

i'm not enjoying it at all. wew what a mess

It would be interesting if you could try it removing yourself from all the stuff you've read online but I think that's impossible nowadays. Either way, as much as people mostly complain about the plot and whatnot, I truly believe gameplay wise is mediocre at best. What an uneventful experience.

The best thing is these fan dreams aren't half assed either. BoTW is one of my favorite games ever, mario odyssey seems to be nailing everything that i wanted, and samus returns looks like a dream to play. Prime 4 is of course the icing on the cake, but since the details are so light right now i won't put it in my mind too much.

The fact that at the end of this year i will have played a new zelda, new mario and new metroid is soooooooooo good.

Why would you do this to yourself
.

I'm glad that they took the cinematic fights from other m and implemented them in a more tasteful manner in samus returns. The beginning of samus returns is so much better than other m already.

"only one person called me princess"

PUUUUUUUUUUUKE

Other M has really been our "last impression" of Samus proper for half a decade now, so it's VERY nice to have a new game to look forward to so we can finally leave Other M in the dustbin where it belongs.

I know people are bummed about this being 2.5D but between the NSMB series and A Link Between Worlds and this being on the 3DS (3D effects wanted from Nintendo), I'm fine with it. It can't be helped and in motion I think it looks fantastic. Maybe if it's a success we can get the Metroid version of Sonic Mania on the Switch

I played it, the "original" things were atrocious to say the least. I can turn a blind eye to them because it's a good fanmade effort all around, but that shit wouldn't be acceptable in an official game.

So you can like it for every reason you want but putting it into the same conversation as other Metroid games is insane.

And what wasn't 'original' was made by Nintendo; the game was a ROM hack. What was good about AM2R was that it was basically a remixed version of Zero Mission. A lot of the hardwork of basic design and implementation was already done.

Ok, I guess I didn't know I can't get SNES games on my current 3DS. I wanted to buy Super Metroid, but I guess that wouldn't have worked out!

The game does make use of some Nintendo-made assets, but the big majority of the game was fanmade and it doesn't even make any use of a Metroid ROM let alone emulation. It's completely remade.

I find it a bit annoying when people compare Samus Returns to it, putting AM2R on a pedestal, but let's not downplay the incredible effort that went into it.

Haha yeah, SNES VC is exclusive to the n3DS along with a couple of games like Xenoblade.

Dude...DUDE!!

What the hell is the Omega metroid going to even look like if the Zeta metroid looks like THAT?! D:
I'm hoping for a t-rex with the ability to boost or something just as ferocious. Make that sucker headbutt...although we can also look towards metroid fusion as a hint as to what we might be getting.

edit : mildly late/beaten

I'm just curious what they're going to do with power ups and how important they're going to be. Didn't you swap them out in the original II? Pretty sure you at least swapped the beam weapons, but I think you also swapped in and out things like the spider ball? It has been a while since I played.

But my point is, I wonder how much of a Super Metroid like progression they are giving the game because it seems the ability game is more like the SM version.

Which also ties into the "killing Metroids to expand map" thing, which is a fairly anti-SM progression thing. I wonder how this stuff will be balanced.

The only items you swapped in Metroid II were beams, all other items were permanent just like in every other Metroid.

The right decision.

I have a 3DS but I really want that 2DS XL. I'm not sure if it ever went up on Amazon.
I still have a launch 3DS and it's a horrible thing to play on. I didn't want to buy a new 2DS XL and I still won't. I'll just get the game and enjoy it as much as possible on the tiny screens.

3DS, even XL, hurts my hands so much. I hardly played on it except for Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7. I've purchased OoT, Majora's Mask, ALBW, 2 pokemon games, a Kirby game, Yoshi's Wooly World, Mario Maker...can't play any of them because how small the thing is. The Switch on the other hand, is a perfect size. I'm gonna hate play through it, only because I love Metroid.

Couldn't resist myself and had to start a new Metroid Fusion playthrogh because I'm just too excited about this game. It's been so long too that I barely remember most of it.

Zero Mission will follow for sure. Maybe II as well. Replaying these without having to get depressed over the thought that we'll never get something similar again is so liberating!

Ive heard this looks really good if you watch the treehouse gameplay but im scared to spoil it.

Should i check it out?

I do need some convincing, as ive heard some people arent impressed with who is behind it
