Nintendo First-Party Thread: The Teams, The Games, The Future

Really interested in finding out what Retro is making. I can't see Nintendo not making a new Donkey Kong, especially after their plans to move forward with the Donkey Kong rollercoaster at Universal.

Yet, if Retro hired the Deus Ex composer I can't see him doing the score for a Donkey Kong game. I'm puzzled.

i would love a new DK but i really hope its a new ip
I wonder who is handling Smash, if anyone? Sakurai again?

thats extremely likely imho. possibly also with Bandai Namco again.

Technically, EAD never worked on Metroid. It was always R&D1's baby, and they were shuttered and mostly transferred to SPD, and that ended up being fused with EAD to become EPD...

Yeah, R&D1 did make some brilliant things, Metroid, Balloon Fight the Warioland games etc..

Retro obviously did an amazing job of transferring Metroid into a first person 3D game and everything they've made since showcase in good game design, but I did personally have more fun with Super, Fusion and Zero Mission than the Prime trilogy.. Slightly disappointed Metroid 2 remake hasn't been developed in house and that it's polygons instead of sprite based but it did look like great fun in the videos and the hands on impressions sound promising too.

Metroid 2 is in-house with outside collaboration for the grunt work and design input.

Ok that's fair. Obviously Sakamoto is producing but just found out that Takehiko Hosokawa is designing the maps for example as well, so it sounds like the actual direction and game design is mostly coming from Nintendo and Mercury Steam is basically just doing the gruntwork.

My bad.

Music by Yamamoto and Hamano is good news.

I was delighted to learn that Retro Studios weren't developing Metroid Prime 4. The series has needed a new direction, and it's great that some ideas have been put on the table.
Hope that we can have the option to play in third-person, while they're at it. Not sure that they're working on a new IP, but I suspect it will be something with Western audiences in mind. This past December, Nintendo filed a trademark application on the back of other renewals of ownership for a highly-acclaimed, but dormant IP, indicating that an interest was still there. Some thought it meant that it was getting a Virtual Console release, but there's little to suggest that it was on the cards. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a sequel to Eternal Darkness.

Would be cool, but I don't think that would happen. Especially if they are already labeling it as First-Person action.

now that ARMS has shipped, I wonder if the team will begin work on a New Mario Kart title? Hoping Nintendo adopts the 'Games as a service' model going forward.

Maybe a remake of Fusion, but on a more powerful system this time?

Eh....

Fusion and all of the other post-Metroid II games really aren't in need of a remake. Metroid 1+2 were really old and archaic and were obviously in need of some sort of update. Fusion, Zero Mission and especially Super Metroid are fine as they are. Just keep re-releasing them through the Virtual Console or whatever.

But, if Fusion did get remade, I'd hope Sakamoto wouldn't lose it again and intentionally make the game more like Other M (ie bringing back Jessica Martin and telling her to do the same lifeless monologues whenever Samus is talking).

I'd happily take a hole "Metroid" remake collection. I'd love it if they even "just" gave it the Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga+Bowser's Minions treatment because that looks absolutely fantastic! Uprezzed and shaded sprites!

There's no point in discussing "Prime 4" being anything other than first person. There is however fruitful discussion to be had about 3D Metroid happening again in third person in general.

Oh definitely, a new Wario Land would be amazing, loved that series.. or pehaps they could finally make that Metroid Dread we've been waiting on for more than a decade? :)

Wario Land VB trademark => remake incoming? :D

I can't get over how much of a missed opportunity the lack of Virtual Boy VC on 3DS is. :(

They may bring certain good games like VB Wario Land to a future system in one form or another, and that's fine. But there would be something poetic about 3DS, Nintendo's successful 3D system, demystifying the peculiar case of Virtual Boy. Oh well. Reggie did say that 3DS will be supported up to 2018 and beyond, so who knows... :p

By missed opportunity you mean waste of time and resources? :)

Remake the less than a handful interesting games it has and turn them into something actually worthwhile.

Just hope that there will be a good party game... so much potential with the joy con
either Mario Party or Warioware will do

I'm interested to see how the next few years shape out for Switch, year one has been strong and some of the biggest Nintendo franchises have/will launch by Christmas.

I can see Pokemon being the big 2019 Christmas game and 2019 could also be Metroid Prime 4. If they are aiming for 1 big game every month it will be interesting to see how they keep up with that

Nope, I mean a chance to reintroduce potentially the entire library of the system with very little effort from Nintendo's part, and a chance for players to experience the games more or less in their original 3D form, headset aside. On the other hand, what you're suggesting does sound like an actual waste of time and resources, in my opinion. I would play a remake of VB Wario Land, but I wouldn't prefer it over either the original version or an entirely new Wario Land. There's a certain novelty in playing classic games in their original form, and that's particularly so for "lost" classics.

I hope we get a new good old school Mario Party ride.

They need to get back to Mario Party 1-3 basics though and drop all the stupid crap they've been trying to push, like all characters moving on the same car.

Also a modern Mario Party really needs online play, more than any other Nintendo franchise.

I have no faith in Nd Cube though.

Nintendo is all set for the rest of 2017 with a first-party game every month or so, but I'm interested in seeing how they keep up the pace going into 2018. What do they have in store for the first half of 2018? They will definitely do a fall Direct and address this, but allow me to speculate a bit.

We know Kirby, Yoshi and Fire Emblem are coming, but we don't know exactly when. Yoshi was shown playable at E3, which leads me to believe it's coming out earlier than the rest. I think Kirby and Fire Emblem could also be Q1/Q2 of 2018 considering these franchises like to launch in that timeframe, but it's too early to say.

As far as unannounced games...

Mario Party 11: It will have been about a year and a half since Star Rush, so it's about time. I know this release won't excite people unless they decide to go back to the classic style, but Mario Party is a big seller for Nintendo regardless.

Animal Crossing: The mobile app is coming along, but I imagine they would want to follow up with a mainline game soon after it. Maybe it could launch in the spring?

Pikmin 4: Pikmin is not something you would save for the holiday, so maybe spring 2018 will be the time. We've been hearing about it forever.

Retro Studios: No idea. Considering how long Retro has been in the dark, it's possible this is almost ready to go.

I don't think all of these will happen this early, but those are some possibilities, I guess. I just hope they're able to keep up the momentum after the holidays. A big chunk of their big teams are releasing games this year.

That would be great actually, by all accounts it's a really solid Wario Land game which most people haven't had a chance to experience due it to being on VB.

They could remake the GB or VB ones which were all great games. Such a wonderful series to not see represented in some way. Or at least bring back WarioWare.

First half of 2018:

January: nothing
February to May: Kirby, Yoshi, Animal Crossing, Super Mario Maker DX
June: Smash DX with an E3 invitational

Second half:

July to September: Mario Party, Pikmin 4, Fire Emblem
October to December: Retro's new game, Pokémon, new third party collab

Possibly Next Level Games and a new IP somewhere.

Here's what I'm thinking right now:

Early Spring 2018 - Yoshi
Late Spring 2018 - Kirby
Summer 2018 - Mario Party 11
Late Summer/Autumn 2018 = Pikmin 4
Autumn 2018 = Fire Emblem (they said they were planning for a 2018 release, but I don't think they would push this into the holiday territory)
Late Autumn/Winter 2018 - Animal Crossing
Late 2018 = Retro's Project
2019 - Pokemon, Metroid Prime 4

I'm starting to wonder if Smash is going to be a port or a new game. If it's the former, I expect it come out next year since that will get good sales regardless of when it releases, which is why I think Pokken was chosen as a year 1 title instead.

Speaking of Pokemon, I feel like the mainline game may release earlier in the year than usual. They've usually stuck to between September and November, but I could see it being a Spring/Summer 2019 release.

Mario Maker is a weird one. They've already ported it to another system, so I wonder if they're making a sequel or something completely different along with a Mario Maker port.

I'm surprised there's no Mario party this year.

I thought it would get a reveal at E3, since the last two were. I still think we'll see one next year anyway, since they tend to come out ever 1.5-2 years.

I hope they maintain the rate of new IP going into 2018.

I could see EPD5 cooking up something new after Sub Wars and Tank Troopers
EPD6 have wrapped up Badge Arcade now...
The Tomodachi/Rhythm Heaven team are quiet...

I'd love to see something brand new from these three.

I also can't wait to see what Takao Shimizu (and team) does with the Switch.
The Louvre guide was amazing!

I'd expect both Yoshi and Kirby closer to mid 2018 honestly. Both trailers (especially Kirby) look more like proof of concepts. Only reason I'd expect them early 2018 is because there's nothing else announced at the moment, but there's still half a year worth of Nintendo Directs.

Yoshi got a 30 minute demo on the treehouse and Kirby is one of the most simple games to make. No way both of those are proof of concepts.

Kirby looks very placeholder-ish honestly. Most of the assets look practically lifted from Triple Deluxe (but HD) and I'm not sure if there was even a new power up in the trailer. Of course the new thing was ability mixing which is what I mean by proof of concept.

IIRC, Robobot was revealed with a story trailer and all!

EDIT: Yoshi indeed looks a lot more advanced but it doesn't look that close to finish although I'd guess it'll come early 2018 either way.

Those were definitely not proof of concept trailers. Those games are well into production already. As mentioned above, we had a live playthrough of Yoshi. These weren't Metroid Prime 4 logo trailers, what we saw was actual gameplay.

A lot of the modern traditional Kirby games look like that. Triple Deluxe was announced in October 2013 with no name and very little footage and even then it was released the following January.

That's all I want. Mario Party could be really really big. It's overlooked now because of the car mechanics, but if Nintendo goes back to the style of the original Mario Party games with online could sell very very well.

It's time to bring Mario Party back to what it was. I miss it. Maybe then charging for online is another reason for them to think "hey let's put online with friends for Mario Party". They're doing us right with 3D Zelda and 3D Mario.

I want to see that continue with Mario Party and Paper Mario.

There's no question about Yoshi since it was playable, but I don't think Kirby is a placeholder either, seeing as the text is already in English.

Idk why I had a dream about Retros game, but I did lol. It was weird. You played football and golf. The game had towns in it and took a more realistic artstyle to it. It was weird lol. I wished I could remember the name.

So this was pretty interesting:
https://twitter.com/cvxfreak/status/880249029791072257
A7: Kimishima: We'll look into investing toward film. We want to increase opportunities for Nintendo IP & guide consumers w/ HW=SW synergy.

https://twitter.com/cvxfreak/status/880249298406879232
A7: Regarding Kirby, we'll take your valuable opinion into consideration. (cont'd w/ Miyamoto)

https://twitter.com/cvxfreak/status/880249607380361217
A7: Miyamoto: We hold the Kirby IP and it's growing in Europe. It's selling in Spain; watched in places w/out game hardware

EDIT! :OOOO

https://twitter.com/cvxfreak/status/880249885315833858
A7: Miyamoto: We want to make anime for Pikmin, Star Fox, Yoshi, etc. and distribute it freely, or integrate into games

But obviously not without precedent. These are the examples that come to mind, but are there others?

-= Starfox Zero: The Battle Begins =-

So I finally got around to watching this as I recently bought the actual game and had heard that Nintendo had produced this short.... and

...this is why is so infuriating to be a lifelong Nintendo fan sometimes :(

The short PERFECTLY encapsulates EVERYTHING that makes Nintendo... well, muthafucking Nintendo!
It's charming, colorful, well produced, acted, staged, and yet wonderfully simple. The closest thing I could compare it to was the other similar short (or series of) that they had produced for Kid Icarus: Uprising

You know the saddest part about it all though? The video has less than a million views at this point and it's been up since April 20th or so T___T

...Looks like a discussion with Miyamoto was posted on Miiverse yesterday... Full interview, copy / pasted from Miiverse...
MariChan: First, let me congratulate you on your special showing of the PIKMIN Short Movies at the Tokyo International Film Festival!

Miyamoto: Thank you! It was incredible to be able to screen my films at such a prestigious event.

MariChan: I got the opportunity to watch them as well, and the 20 minutes seemed to pass in a blink of an eye. During the game I didn't really have the chance to think of the Pikmin as individuals, but I suppose that really, each one must have this kind of drama in their lives...

I do think that Nintendo did make the mistake of spending as much money as they did on the game [F-Zero GX]. It's insane that every character in the game got their own BGM and voice acting, and that the story mode had as many CG cutscenes as it did, but I can't imagine that they made the path to profitability easy with those kinds of moves on top of making it so content-rich.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080115191254/http://cube.ign.com:80/articles/427/427647p2.html
...[The brief Q&A; comes to a close. Miyamoto, Imamura and Nagoshi use the remaining minutes to stress how important the new addition of the story mode to F-Zero GX is, in their opinions.]

Nagoshi: We have a story mode, which we've never had before in an F-Zero game. The way the story mode works is that we've taken some very high quality cinematics and created a story for the game. Each of the chapters for the story is essentially mission-based gameplay; once you achieve a mission you have the opportunity to unlock the next story. There are roughly 10 chapters and you will get a deeper understanding of the universe of F-Zero and the F-Zero characters. We included this mode because we felt that the F-zero universe was very unique and we wanted to take that opportunity to explain some of the character motivations and flush out the F-Zero universe.

Miyamoto: Of course on the Nintendo side we're very happy because these characters that Mr. Imamura created are really finally coming to life and taking on some personality...

I uploaded ALL unlockable Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World short movies. They're simply adorable.

Is Koichi Hayashida really producing Odyssey? Koizumi seems to be doing that, at least is how he has been credited so far.

We actually got gameplay of Yoshi at E3, & Kirby looked pretty far along. Early-to-Spring 2018 for both games isn't really out of the question.

I'll stick with Retro is making a new IP and it'll be western oriented. I can see it falling into two categories- the Destiny/Anthem type of games or the Uncharted/The Last of Us/Tomb Raider type of games.

Those are very specific choices. I don't see either one happening.

That studio is really capable of anything.

Is Koichi Hayashida really producing Odyssey? Koizumi seems to be doing that, at least is how he has been credited so far.

Koizumi: General Producer (because he's head of EPD like Miyamoto was before)
Hayashida: Producer (because's he's the group producer of EPD Tokyo Group 2, formerly EAD Tokyo Group 2)

Those are very specific choices. I don't see either one happening.

Tbh I really want a western oriented IP from them. If Sony could get their studios to transition from Jak and Daxter to Uncharted, then I don't see why an amazing studio like Retro can't either.

There is one game I would be happy with though if it's not a new IP and that is 3D DK.

Koizumi: General Producer (because he's head of EPD like Miyamoto was before)
Hayashida: Producer (because's he's the group producer of EPD Tokyo Group 2, formerly EAD Tokyo Group 2)

Hmmm he is being called just producer of mario odyssey, just like aonuma for zelda, yabuki for arms, or nogami for splatoon, he is the head producer of the mario series. In the AMA koizumi did he mentioned that hayashida is involved in the game, but didn't say his position

What is Skip Ltd up to? I mean they're second party technically, right? but still thats a special team and im incredibly curious. Does the makeup of the studio even vaguely resemble the people who were around when art style games hit for wii and ds?
