What is the best first-party PS5 game at the moment?

Here we go again, do you see anyone making articles about ""second-party games"" on PS4, PS5 or Switch? Why do SIE and Nintendo only report first-party software sales and not second-party?
You tell me. If you cant parse out the difference I don't know what do say.

So many developers have stated that people in the industry do not use the term second party.

A game is either third-party or first-party.
Of course they are going to say that, it makes it sound bigger than they are. Its all marketing, but at the end of the day a 1st party and a 2nd party games are different in ownership. You call call it what you like but there is a term that does specifically define what that is and that is second party or as what Hulst calls "partners". It's not the same thing as first party it never has been.

GT7 and it isn't even particularly close. Astrobot would be my second choice and maybe Returnal or Demon Souls in third, but those both have flaws.

The Last of Us part 1 would be the clear winner for me if it wasn't already released for two previous generations. But the game is exceptional and it's an unforgettable remake and easily the best looking game on the console for me.

Demon's Souls and Astrobot are really the only two options as I see it for this vote.. R&C was great but not that great.

What a dreadful generation in terms of first-party output compared to precious generations.

Returnal

It's the only feeling even close to the feels I got the first time I beat Demon's Souls or Dark Souls on PS3. You start out feeling the is game is just impossible and too punishing. But if you put the time in, your eyes begin to open. You start recognizing weaknesses in opponents. And essential skills become muscle memory. And by the time you beat it, mobs and bosses that seemed completely impossible are now your bitch.

I wholeheartedly agree.

It's The Last Of Us Part I for me and it's still the bench to which I compare new releases to.

Game was amazing, and it was my first time playing it, having not made it out of the initial stealth section back on PS3.

Really sold me on my PS5.

I'm going with Returnal.
But only when using some sort of save cheat, like uploading your paused cycle to the cloud as a single save spot. I don't think the payoff after a failed cycle is enough, leads to too much frustration and grinding. But with just one save spot it goes from a generous 7/10 to a 10/10 for me. It's the closest to a 3rd person Metroid I've ever experienced. On PC you can even mod in all Samus suit variants.
So so so good. Can't wait for Saros!

Well, dont want to sound rude, but: duh

People dont care about it cause they've experienced this story on the PS3 and PS4 more than a decade ago.

Part I is good, but at the end of the day its a 1-1 Remake that its not even better than the decade old original in every way (I preffer the acting in some cutscenes on the original)

The best exclusive on the PS5 being the remake of a remastered PS3 game would be just sad.

1st party its Astrobot. For 2nd party its Stellar blade and for third party ( or maybe 2nd party)exclusive its Death stranding 2.

Ironic that the most popular out of the list on Gaf is also one of the worst-selling out of the bunch.

If Gaf would be in charge, it'd run Playstation right into the ground.

But it's a good game.

Anyway, I'd say TLOU Part 1, just because it's TLOU Part 1.

Many of the games on the list are not first party games, since Sony doesn't own that studio. Also, Sony doesnt even own the IP for Stellar Blade or Rise of Ronin too.

First-party developers

In the video game industry, a first-party developer is part of a company that manufactures a video game console and develops mainly for it. First-party developers may use the name of the company itself (such as Nintendo), have a specific division name (such as Sony's Polyphony Digital) or have been an independent studio before being acquired by the console manufacturer (such as Rare or Naughty Dog).[6] Whether by purchasing an independent studio or by founding a new team, the acquisition of a first-party developer involves a huge financial investment on the part of the console manufacturer, which is wasted if the developer fails to produce a hit game on time.[7] However, using first-party developers saves the cost of having to make royalty payments on a game's profits.[7] Current examples of first-party studios include Nintendo EPD for Nintendo, PlayStation Studios for Sony, and Xbox Game Studios for Microsoft Gaming.

First-party developers
First-party developer =/= first party game.

All you need for it to be a first party title is it being published by that company, which is why Stellar Blade is included.

Likewise, a first party developer could, theoretically, make a 3rd party game. Say, if Sony allowed Naughty Dog to make the next Sonic and that Sonic game was then published by SEGA.

As in developed by SIE? Sure (except that there's Demon's Souls as well), but that doesn't mean that the rest aren't first-party

Unless the studio is OWNED by Sony, I don't consider it first party personally. I do understand funding the game, but not owning the studio and calling it first party? That's a nah from me.

Stalker isn't xbox first party.

I think it depends on which definition is right. Looks like google AI considers ownership of IP as a sticking point.

Nintendo do that all the time. Mario + Luigi or Zelda Echoes of Wisdom are developped by third party devs using 1st party IP

... that made a first-party game.
Stellar Blade was neither funded nor produced by Sony, just published. The game was revealed in a Xbox showcase trailer long before Sony got involved, same as WuKong.

It's technically a 2nd party game. Sony owns neither the studio nor IP.

it's Returnal

Astro Bot is a great game, and I played it all like three times, but Returnal is game of the generation for me. Absolutely perfect.

Astro is a perfect little jewel but it's just not bold or innovative enough for me to pick it over Returnal. Also the story was bonkers. When they revealed that the melody was
don't fear the reaper
I almost lost my mind.

I think the definition that publishers use/is used in the industry is the correct one since anything else will just mudd the waters.

When disclosing first party titles in their official financial briefings, they will include published titles. E.g. Sony will include things like Stellar Blade, Death Stranding 2 etc. in which case IP and studio ownership is irrelevant.

The list is interesting as I love my PS5 (now Pro) and have had such great gaming on it.
However, the list makes me realise that a chunk of my most memorable games were not 1st party.

The best Returnal, followed by God of War.
Special mention as a total disappointment goes to Spiderman 2. I loved the first one, but this one bored me to tears. Terrible script, too many characters, too many gadgets, affected by woke disease, I hate the design of this Peter Parker, etc. Get back to basics, Insomniac!!!!
But, yes, the best exclusive is the wonderful Returnal! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Platform holder published games get treated as first party because those games are afforded the full rights as any other first party game, in terms of marketing and control over where they can be published.

For Xbox, it means Play Anywhere, Day One on Gamepass, on xCloud.

That's why we use the word "Technically" to describe the 2nd party to differentiate the game from other first party games.

Voted for Stellar Blade, but man.. if you remove the remakes and cross-gen titles that is quite a depressing list for a console that's been out for almost 5 years now.

Marketing and publishing. The game was already being funded and produced by Shift Up as a multi-platform before Sony got involved.
It has been reported that Sony's involvment with the game helped to increase its scope, so I don't know if it was only marketing and publishing

Why would you remove cross-gen titles in a question about games made during this generation ?
