Super-Russian-Roulette-A-New-Party-Game-for-the-NES-600x335.jpg

It's a new NES party game from Batsly Adams. You play Russian Roulette with up to 3 people and the CPU using the Zapper. It's actually pretty dang amazing. My copy came in last week and we had a ton of fun with it this weekend.

was just coming over to post after i just beat lifeforce since it's a holiday but that's an interesting game.... the teddy bear part was funny =)

i made it to the final boss of life force with 1 life, no deaths, but stupidly ran into the egg/sphere shaped thing that the salamander boss is rolling around. i thought it turned into background art much like the background of the 1st stage boss disappears.
since my bullets start to go through the sphere i moved my ship up and crash! dammit.
end up beating it with 4 lives bc after i killed the boss, i didn't have the speed to maneuver the exit portion and crashed 3 times....

I just beat Jackal a couple weeks ago. After I learned how to cheese the last boss.
i'm moving unto Jackal... how do you cheese the last boss, what's the technique =D

It's me, the guy that says Battletoads is easy. I can not get past Stage 2 of Life Force. :)
stage 2 for the nes is actually stage 4 for US arcade with the stage 4 boss and 2 boss back to back. kinda tricky without full power. but the stage 2 boss at the end is so much easier than the arcade as you can hide in the lower right or left corner for at least 2 passes without getting hit by the bosses tentacles. the arcades was damn hard at that part.

I can't get past stage 3, the fireball arcs get me every time. Hard game.
hopefully you have full power or at least options with missiles to cover you when enemies pop out of the lava.
like the arcade, i just stay in a safe zone in the lower left/center part of the screen (right above the hi-score lettering between the "Hi" and the first number digit from the left). the eruptions will loop around you at the same spot. just be careful of the little eagles that pop out in the safety zone during the eruption. there's a few multiple eruptions: stay in the safe zone for 2x eruptions and move forward out of it for the 3rd.

the arcade has a warning voice which was cool.

It brought back memories of sleepovers in the 80s trying to beat it for me too. The third form was the toughest for me! I had to re-do Act 6 5 or 6 times because of him. I kept running out of fire power.
haha i had to do it twice... much less time than the second boss!

Love it. Nice work.
thanks =)

You can just stay on the far right edge (maybe left too) and just pop out and shoot him a few times when it's clear. He doesn't shoot at the edges of the screeen.

I'm going full bore into Life Force after I get through Sonic CD. I'll try to find the sweet spot for those flame arcs.

Got to stage 3 in Lifeforce, no deaths. Then I died. A lot. I will have to learn to no death this. It's too hard to recover after a death.

How many levels is it?

(Have been crossposting from pickups thread and other retro threads, so sorry in advance for annoying anyone lol) After a lifetime of dreaming/planning I finally had the chance to visit Japan for two weeks last month. Aside from exploring and enjoying all Tokyo had to offer, I spent a considerable amount of time hunting down some games that've been on my hitlist for years. (Apologies in advance for the horrible Iphone pic quality). BTW the claim that Tokyo is a dearth for deals is categorically false. For Famicom I really wanted to delve into the world of FDS and was lucky enough to find a fully functional Sharp Twin within the first day of my travels. With that I realized how affordable, and cute, these floppy disks were and found quite a few I wanted and discovered more than a few I never knew I did. SO far my favorite FDS game has to be Otocky. Its an utterly brilliant experimental rhythm/hybrid horizontal shooter where each multi-directional bullet is a different musical note dependent on whatever instrument powerup you pickup. Also there a music maker. Still cant believe this was made for Fami! Also love the SD horror games like Akumajo boku no special and Wanpaku Graffiti. Beat Samurai Pizza Cats with the gf and what a fun platformer that was! Perfectly balanced until the last fight...

As I mentioned above, I recently got back from a trip to Japan and brought back a sharp twin famicom home with me. Everything is flawless and fun with it except for this weird chirping noise that sounds like two pieces of Styrofoam getting frisky. Any ideas what's causing it? It's not the pvm crt as I've tested on both this monitor and my hd tv and the sound is present on both. Must be something wrong with the system? Here's a video capturing the chirping sound with every bit of audio, music or effect.

P.S. I know the mic on the 2nd controller can oxidize internally and have yet to clean it but the buzz is not the sound I'm targeting atm.

My friend and I have been going through Chrontendo and saw the episode that had Otocky on it. Game looks really neat, almost like a 2d side scrolling shmup take on Rez. Gotta pick that one up!

I was gonna say it might be the AC adapter or something based on the description, but it doesn't sound like something a bad AC adapter would produce sound wise. Is it like that with every game?

Got some serious work done in Life Force. Made it to the fifth level. The amount of times I die on easy sections by moving too early or doing something completely stupid is very high. I will definitely be able to beat this with some more practice. It's very good.

you'll no death run it in no time. pretty manageable patterns. there's a few cheap shots (walls closing in) but once you know them, it's smooth sailing.

i picked up something neat today while grabbing dinner:

pretty excited to bring the arcade home =)

I've got a good feel for the first five levels, it's just a matter of executing at this point. The third and fourth levels seem the easiest now, they don't give me any trouble. My next hump is to reliably get by the Egyptian part of the fifth level. I've got to the final level a couple of times but came in to them with no power ups from dumb deaths at the end of the fifth level. I almost made it to the final boss on low power ups but the Legendary Wings heads took me out.

Nice, I had Arkanoid w/ the controller back in the day.

Made it to level 5 in Life Force. I didn't know that you could destroy the volcanos on Stage 2. That may be a game changer. Those always used to get me every time.

Okay, I just beat life force. I died near the end of stage five but got into stage six with some upgrades. Burned through 3 or 4 lives on the end escape sequence and made it with none left. That was a close one.

I am jealous now. That's awesome. Surely that has to be rare.

Just sang the Arkanoid level start jingle in my head when I saw this! I used to play it all the time on my Apple IIgs (no paddle unfortunately, but the mouse was pretty good for controlling). Awesome pickup!

So, I received my FDS Stick today. Popped into my Macbook laptop and ... nothing. The computer won't read it. My laptop is set to show external drives on the desktop, but it doesn't appear on the desktop or anywhere that I can find in the system menu. Anyone have any advice? There's next to no info about troubleshooting this thing on the web that I can find....

It doesn't appear as a mass storage device, you need to use a utility load romz onto it. That's available here: http://www.3dscapture.com/fdsstick/

It's Windows only so if you are using it on a mac you'd need to use some workaround.

If I had a nickel for ever time I died in a stupid way of my own design in Salamander...

The game is not forgiving. I'm finding that I absolutely have to not die to progress. I'm definitely getting better, but man the game is just a fucker sometimes.

I bought a broken NES front loader (blinking light) for $20, plan is to fix it (BLW) and get it rgb modded. I've been hesitant to get my og one from back in the day modded so decided to grab another.

Best laid plans... lol
Quoting myself from a couple pages back, got the NES in yesterday, cut the lockout leg of the CIC chip, installed the BLW and it works. Nice! Now to get it RGB modded!

Thanks. That's all way over my head, though.

After looking into it a bit more it seems the CLI app is outdated and is for an older version of the firmware. I tried compiling it on Linux but it complained about some function in fds.cpp, which was easily fixed by making it a static function. But it wouldn't link the executable after it compiled anyway. After that I gave up, but yeah either way it probably wouldn't work on the latest firmware. :(

I think I played Arkanoid with the paddle controller once or twice back in the day. In fact until that picture I forgot it was even a thing, heh.

Jackal - I've gained a newfound appreciation for Jackal over the years. I remember hating it because my brother would always make me play it coop with him. I was the scrubby little brother and he would get furious that I would die so fast. But playing it solo I really like it.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my NES collection, and I'm looking for a certain unlicensed game that I used to play at my grandma's as a kid.

It was on a light blue cart and was a side-scrolling shooter. I think it was set underwater or something but I'm not 100% sure. Any idea what that could be?

On a side note, my buddy is pondering that Russian Roulette game and I selfishly hope he gives in and buys it. Looks super fun.

I'm guessing King Neptune's Adventure. Light blue carts were Color Dreams's trademark.

I met the creator a few months ago. He was really proud that he made the only Zapper game to work on modern TVs ;)

He also did some pretty wild NES hacking. One let people interfere with the programming rules of NES games on the fly over the internet. The other was a physical scoreboard that actually lit up in real life when you scored in Blades of Steel.

Great pickup!
We've had an Arkanoid arcade cabinet back in the day in the café I grew up in. Loved that game and played it to death.

While I don't have the western version of this, I do have the next best thing. :)

Hmmm it doesn't look familiar. I might be wrong about the underwater thing. Definitely light blue cartridge though. I'll have to look into the Color Dreams games further. Thanks!

Go to NESguide.com, use the drop-down menu to search by publisher and look at the cover art and gameplay video clips.

This is it!!! You are my hero. No idea if this game was actually any good, but it may be a good way to restart my NES collection.

Thanks for this. This website will be lifesaver.

Glad you found the game. I use NES Guide all the time. I would love to see an even more robust take on the concept, but I'm glad that this site does at least exist.

Nazo no Murasamejou is my favorite FDS game. Glad to see you have it.

booted up Jackel for the 1st time since grabbing it, made it to the 4th board without dying. this game is pretty damn easy in the early levels. i died bc apparently if there's several bullet on screen some of them flicker off and turn nearly invisible, one killed me.

taking a break after beating the 4th boss. man those jeep rockets are so over powering.

Huh, last time I played jackal I only made it to the second boss. I guess my general nes game skills are lacking haha.

Yeah, he's good people and a dangnab genius. I hope he never stops innovating on the NES haha
