Or both. Maybe we'll play/see see Joel's part of the story through flashbacks. There must be a motive for Ellie being hell bent.
Yeah, I mean, it is absolutely possible Joel is dead and the story is told through flashbacks, but the idea of "You find out at the end that Joel is dead and Ellie has been talking to his ghost all along" feels too cheap to me for Naughty Dog. Also, even if they were considering that idea, they have probably already changed it.
I can see the game starting exactly where Part I ended and skipping 5 years after some kind of shocking event.
