The Last of Us Part II announced

Or both. Maybe we'll play/see see Joel's part of the story through flashbacks. There must be a motive for Ellie being hell bent.

Yeah, I mean, it is absolutely possible Joel is dead and the story is told through flashbacks, but the idea of "You find out at the end that Joel is dead and Ellie has been talking to his ghost all along" feels too cheap to me for Naughty Dog. Also, even if they were considering that idea, they have probably already changed it.

I can see the game starting exactly where Part I ended and skipping 5 years after some kind of shocking event.

The motive could be anything, like Fireflies attacking the base they lived in to capture Ellie, and killing some of their close ones in the process.

It turns out that there was no plague and Joel concocted an elaborate scheme to kidnap Ellie, as a longstanding court order forbids him to be anywhere near his child after a messy divorce.

Looks like Tommy is back

Happy to see good guy Tommy return. Half expect him to be killed off at some point during the story though.

PSX

The video they showed in the last PSX was recorded 2 years ago. I expect some new footage.
As Naughty Dog stated several times on Twitter: This year they primarily worked on TLL. There are probably only some small parts of the studio working on TLoU2 but that will change now.

You shouldn't expect anything.

Some people started saying that after the trailer came out, saying that Joel is actually dead already and that Ellie was talking to his ghost. It could be, but honestly, it would feel cheap and disappointing since one of the main elements of TLOU is their relationship.
Sorry to bump -

I also think Ellie's somebody who's ALREADY been through massive amounts of shit and has already witnessed massive amounts of death, including the deaths of loved ones.

Having her constantly hallucinate Joel after he dies wouldn't just be cheap, it'd be deeply implausible for a character who has, in fact, already been *brutally* taught how to deal with loss. And it'd be really damaging to the presentation of an otherwise pretty stark world. Not at all against that device in some games, but I think it would be a terrible mistake for TLOU and I think ND knows that.

After playing Lost Legacy, I'm really excited to see what they bring to TLOU2. Much like 3's horse felt like a test run for TLOU's horse, I think it's pretty much a given that this game will have some large open areas and probably a car to drive. Given how good those slower exploratory areas were in Last of Us, like the houses with the dart board and attic, a full town to explore and sneak through could be very dynamic.

Integrating a driveable vehicle into the Last of Us design could be interesting. Could you store weapons in it, to let you alter your weapon loadout and crafted gear based on the enemies you're going to face? Vehicle-based set pieces, like hordes of infected or an escape akin to 28 Weeks Later. Ellie driving with Joel providing cover.

Only makes sense why a small story dlc turned out to a almost full blown game in itself. Similar to TLoU remastered was code testing for UC4

Also more contextual brawling and actions with Joel and Ellie working together. They've been iterating on that for two games now;

I noticed that Nadine was pretty good at staying hidden and whatnot while you were being stealthy in Lost Legacy, so I don't think characters are going to sprinting unseen in front of enemies in TLOU2

It would be nice if Sony just didn't start showing games until it was a lot closer to release. It was super nice having Lost Legacy come out 9 months after it was announced.

So just like every ND gameplay reveal?

They should have a VS by now, just show that.
What made the UC4 reveal really interested is that they basically showed off a mini sandbox level, (one of the most free gameplay segments in the game actually....), that showed off their idea of much more open enemy encounters. Only thing that seemed overtly scripted was that famous rope swing moment:

A fully explorable little town would be awesome. TLOU works even better than UC with quiet moments and exploration segments because of its slower pacing and supplies search, so I expect Naughty Dog to go even further with their wide linear level design for TLOU2!

Just need the enemy manipulation from Left Behind and no gameplay-affecting microtransactions in the mp.

but then we get lame shows like E3 2017

Things I expect after playing TLL:

1. Some type of door/locker/safe opening mechanic. One of the things I most enjoyed in LL were the parts where you had to open boxes around enemies. In a game like TLOU the stress and risk/reward will be heightened even more.

2. Maps/Open areas. It'd be shocking if we didn't get large areas/towns in TLOU2. These sections fit in to TLOU more than they do Uncharted and I really hope I can look at a map and make decisions based on risk.

3. Car driving. I don't know if it will be extensive or if I even want it to be but it'd be pretty mean to not let Ellie really drive a car. They teased it in The Skeleseer part of Left Behind and I don't think holding a steering wheel while in neutral in TLOU really counts. Please let Ellie drive a car.

While I think TLL was informed more by TLOU/UC4 (the beginning sections of war ravaged India looked like they could have existed in TLOU2) than TLOU2 will be informed by TLL, I do think we got a bunch of hints.

That sounds like a neat idea, since exploring Bill's town and the university were some of the highlights of the game for me. However, I still hope they'll treat the sequel with "less is more" mentality, instead of making large areas to roam just for the sake of the current open world trend.

I think TLOU obviously has built-in mechanisms for rewarding exploration in a way Uncharted fundamentally cannot, but also I wouldn't necessarily want a massive free-driving Jeep area in TLOU2 in which enemies stick suspiciously close to their 'encounter' locations and can't see you coming.

A city, on the other hand, could be awfully interesting.

And yeah, lockpicking is awesome and I hope TLOU2 gets that or an equivalent.

I remain convinced, though, that the best mechanic the TLOU series could add is the ability to basically hostage-negotiate your way out of some encounters and even turn some potential enemies nonhostile somehow. I think being able to successfully and cinematically and dynamically keep NPCs at bay without harming any of them until you come to an agreement would be fascinating even if it could only be made available in certain encounters (since of course most enemies will be hostile no matter what). I just think it'd be fascinating to start looting a house and then realize that people live there and I can either do hostile actions, sneak around, OR persuade them that I'm not a threat. Not talking dialogue trees here, more like conversations held for X length of time where you need to hold them at gunpoint/hold a hostage and act sufficiently threatening/not get snuck up on until the conversation is over *without* causing harm to anyone. Basically, prevent the shit from hitting the fan. I don't think you'd be making *friends* this way but perhaps you could be allowed to pass through certain areas in peace.

Well, now we know who in ND are the full-timers of TLOU Part 2, at least.

Technically Neil too, but the man got credited on TLL as "Head of Narrative Development", so...

Full speed ahead!

I don't want to look too much into this but I'm a little surprised they are needing single player gameplay system designers.

That said wouldn't be surprised if it's a no-show for the rest of the year. I'm expecting early 2019 at best with the possibility it gets officially revealed in Feb 2019 with PS5 as a cross gen release.

You think it won't be shown again until Feb 2019? y'all need some optimism lol

I think it will be summer 2019. They may schedule it for fall 2018 and delay it. They are trying to avoid delays but I think the scope of what they want to accomplish will get the best of them and make them push it back to refine it.

This is a pretty ironic statement coming from you. :P

No I was saying it will be revealed the fact that it will be a official cross gen release in Feb 2019.

We'll probably see it next Jan or Feb. Maybe a teaser of it this December.. All just my blind uninformed speculation, of course, so meaningless really.

I know lmao

I was gonna say that myself

I do not think that this is a thing in The Last of Us.
Sure they used a car in Part I. But I do not think that this will be relevant for Part II.
It is more likely that open-world areas will be explored by foot or horse. Especially to create a more post-apocalyptic-feeling. Horses are probably our 4x4 in TLOU since we already saw a picture of their mo-cap work where they used a horse. They woman who sat on the horse (do not remember who she was) had guns in her hands. Thats why I think it could happen, that we will have some shooting-mechanics from our horse or something like that.

I think we will hear something at PSX 2017. Some interviews I read also hinted that we will get new infos after TLL is out. If not many fans will be upset why they already teased that game that early.
