This isn't true.
The truth is the people who hate the "echo chamber" weren't and aren't just disagreeing, they were often insulting, confrontational, and said hateful things to justify their point of view. They just lacked basic human empathy, and anonymity made them feel big enough to challenge the very social structure in which they have failed to be successful.
It's not that they got banned for "disagreeing". They were just assholes.
EDIT:Holy crap this was a Long poat
This.
Also, people need to stop with this freaking "everyone gets banned cause I don't like gafs politics" absolute bollocks.
Just LAST WEEK I was having a discussion with someone in the Brexit thread who had a history of saying things like "muslims are taking over London that's why the London Mayor is now muslim" or "when do we just accept that Islam is not compatible with western culture and start to ban them from our country", and also complained about the amount of children of immigrants are in his kids classrooms.
I mean, maybe Im wrong, but has islamophobia ever been part of "gafs politics"? Cause that guy wasnt banned......and he said that stuff over a good period of time?
There was also some Canadian guy I remember seeing, saying he was a Trump supporter because he felt he was turned down a job or school.placememt or something because a brown person applied and they got it instead of him. He wasn't banned.
Then there was "patrol", a so called real life cop who would go into every single thread about police brutality and no matter the amount of video evidence, show no empathy and try to justify every senseless killing that he could. He did this for yeeeeeeeeaars before he was banned.
People DO get piled on for making certain statements or giving certain views, but the problem I see is that they rarely ever are able to substantiate them.
Like the guy from the Brexit thread. Who tried to make out that he only had economic issues (that were flimsy and that he barely cared to defend) with migration and felt outraged when someone suggested he had other reasons he was hiding. Till he was reminded of his islamophobic anti immigration posts. Then came the radio silence.
This is the real problem. People aren't afraid of bans. They just "feel"like they can't say what they want
If they feel they can win, or make an amazing point like "school demographics show that the only reason Londoners would ever vote in a muslim London Mayor is because they're overrun with muslims, numbers don't lie!", they'll talk.
Until they cant explain their reasoning. And then go quiet.
So in this new environment now, that islamophobe above would have gotten his anti Islam rhetoric from his own "echo chamber" that told him "only muslims would vote for a muslim", and not have the discussion with us to quote him the numbers or maybe just put the spark into his mind that maybe the mayor is muslim, because the Muslim candidate was the best candidate.
And last but not least, people didn't want to hear te extremely uncomfortable truths about their populations.
If we're going to stop having political discourse because people felt we were tooooo pro minority rights and toooo intolerant of bigotry then that's a truly sad day.
And if we were so literally famous for it, it's sends an extremely bad message to a whole lot of people that due to pressure from people who don't like our intolerance of intolerance, we've decided to silence that message so that those poor people who want to be intolerant can feel more comfortable knowing they won't have to see us espousing views that the KKK and misogyny are very bad things.
It just sounds a lot like "we need to stop the identity politics now and focus on the 'majority' " type things we heard after Trump won his election.
And this has just popped into my head .....
Why is there even a link between the owners recent trouble with accusations and now suddenly wanting to permenantly kill all political and social discourse?
Those are two seperate issues.
I guess if he never wanted GAF to become this beacon in a sea of crap that shines bright enough to be as hated as it is, and all the political drama that comes with it, then I can understand. Maybe being the face of GAF means personally taking on the insults of cuck/libtard/male feminazi/etc
I just can't get with the idea of killing our naturally left leaning political discourse, to make it "fair" for people who disagreed with it.
People who complained they couldn't voice their opinions, will only be happy that we now can't if they just didn't like to hear ours in the first place.
They shouldn't be celebrating the death of political threads. They should be asking for that ability to say what they really want to say without fear.
Anyone now happy we can't talk about social issues AT ALL, NEVER wanted a "fairer" system for them. They just hated seeing us standing up for what we believed in.
Which means that all they really wanted to say, was "STFU with your SJW SHIT".
And that's an extremely shitty reason to kill the discourse.

EDIT2:
Prime examples of my bolded lines.
People who never needed to open a single thread about social or political views, not wanting a "fair hearing", just not wanting to hear anything at all.
Its not about wanting balancing views, it's about silencing them.
Gonna throw my 2 pennies in....
No more Trump threads.
No more LGBTQ rights threads.
No more threads about Colin Kaepernick.
No more PoliGAF(didn't participate, just read, but those were some knowledgeable dudes. Hate to lose that over some BS)
No more GamerGate threads.
No more Black man shot and killed by cops threads.
No more dirty cop threads(See Baltimore PD recent indictments of officers)
Basically OT will now be Sports, Movies, TV and Music.
Please add the endless climate change bullshit to the list
Otherwise these changes sound perfect, I don't come here for armchair analysis of the current affairs. I come here to be entertained and to learn about other things to entertain myself with. The movie and tv show threads were awesome.
You want to spew your political agendas go elsewhere please
