We are only including AAA First-party games made ONLY by studios owned by Microsoft and Sony at the time of their release, as that would show just how well they are managing their properties without a third-party helping them out. Remasters wouldn't count as AAA since it's just enhancing an existing game, but remakes with good production count as AAA. Based on the reports during the years of its development I will give TLG to Sony under this category, because despite its looks, it is an AAA production that just went badly.

Here are the games released this gen that follow the above criteria:

MICROSOFT

So which of these two do you think had the best quality? Or maybe you are one of the many people who think this generation was pretty lackluster and you didn't like either library?

When you look at both lists you see two companies aiming for entirely different audiences which I find fascinating. But I have to be upfront with you, I really think both Sony and Microsoft dropped the ball this generation in regards to direct first-party studio development.

Sony no doubt and there's no comparison.

Edit: Late edit but I had to do it since theres plenty of idiots here. I am mainly an Xbox guy and no I don't feel attached to any plastic its just MY preferred platform.

I'm an Xbox guy but how is this even a question? On the MS side you have a bunch of Forza, a few Gears, Halo, and trash. Even as good as Forza is, and Gears 5, there's just not much depth here. I'm not a big fan of Sony games but there's much more variety there. And quality. Just not my type of game.

I will say though, you're right about one thing, they've both been dog shit this gen in terms of output. Microsoft shit the bed with their TVTVTV stuff at the start of the gen. Sony won the gen before it even started and got lazy. Compare this gen to last gen where Sony was crawling out of the PS3 gutter and fighting Wii, they made way less games and way less new IP's this gen.

But yeah, when you have to put shit like Project Spark or Kinect Rivals on the list, they're gonna take the L.

PSVR omission is a thing I guess. Its not Kinect, it actually has a solid varied lineup on it's own right.

And I know what you meant OP, but you mentioned exclusive and XBO. I can play all those guys on PC day one at higher settings.

It's funny because there is a Kinect game in there.

Xbox really missed a Fable game this gen. Badly.

No comparison with the output tbh. Aside from Halo, Forza and Gears, Xbox was barren.

That said, at least the Forza games were genre leading.

Edit: Actually, Sea of Thieves deserves special mention. It was original and looked beautiful but just needed fleshing out. It was a superb sandbox though.

Forza Horizon games were developed by Playground games which joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018 so all Forza Horizon games should be out from Xbox side. Since they joined in 2018 and FH4 came out in 2018 most of its development was done before so that's why it is out.

Where the hell are Gravity Rush 2 and Astro Bot?
Then The Last Guardian shouldn't be there either because it's from Sony Japanese first party studios like the two I mentioned.

What makes a game AAA anyway?

Why do you need a thread for an answer this obvious?

I don't like most of the Sony games but at least they had more big games so I guess they win by default.

God of War alone does the job to give Sony the win. MS' flagship Halo sequel is the worst AAA budgeted single-player campaign in shooter history.

What? No. VR in such a low res and such low graphical fidelity is just the worst. This is like the Nintendo Virtual boy

Microsoft, of course. Gears, Gears, Gears, Forza, Forza, Forza, Halo and like 2 or 3 others I can't remember the names of.

What more could a gamer ask for?

Are you kidding me? it's Sony and not even close.

Now between Nintendo and Sony it's closer and there maybe i'd pick Nintendo (and it makes sense cause they have to rely a lot more on the first party releases)

Microsoft, besides Forza Horizon 3-4, and maybe Gears 5 (not for me but i understand its quality) the rest is all just decent or mediocre. Their first party situation has been a trainwreck all gen.

both pale compared to last gen
Not really Sony straight up Nintendo tiered this gen.
horizon 10 million plus
God of war 10 million plus
Last of us 20 million plus
Spider-Man 20 million plus
Infamous best game
Ratchet best game
Bloodborne
Dreams

and u can go on and on

That would mean Resident Evil and countless other games are not a AAA games because the VR version is lower resolution and has lower fidelity. Doesn't make sense now does it?

So is this thread supposed to help or hurt the Xbox?

Because instead of the meme Halo Gears Forza, the op is saying "Gears, Forza, and we'll occasionally add something else once in awhile."

Everyone knows Microsoft got more help from "third" parties than Sony, and why is Gears Ultimate on the list when Epic helped out with it? It's also not a AAA game, it was done in less than 2 years and is mostly a remaster.

Stealth pro-sony thread?

OP wanted only AAA games made by first party when they were released.

Ah ye, makes sense.

Though, that renders this thread even more pointless because Microsoft only had like 5 first party studios, 2 of which were tied to Minecraft and Kinect for a while.

Virtual Boy wasn't even VR, that was just marketing. it was a black&red 3DS precursor that sits very close to your face... not to mention almost every game was sprite-based.

I didn't like anything Microsoft put out this generation. I never tried God of War but I didn't like anything Sony had either that I played. Open world games are terrible.
