Phil Spencer: XGS titles for the “next couple of years” will be cross-gen

I put Phil's quote in google translate, from 'corporate BS' to 'straight talk' and it came back as roughly "we just bought all these studios last year and the XSX exclusives everyone wants won't be ready for another 2 years"

"It's just upscaled Xbox One games. PS5 will have real next-gen games."

That'll be word of mouth. It's already starting.
Even Spencer is indirectly preparing you to lower your expectations, while trying to sell you an XSX at the same time.

But everyone's free to interpret it their own way.
How do you know it will be upscale Xbox One games. Do you have any proof of your claims, because to me it sounds like you are just making it up but can't back it up.

"Our games will be slightly held back" is a better translation. I don't get the Phil love. He's not the worst but I don't know how many under deliveries I can take from him.

People think an actual jump is going to happen with PS5/SeriesX and that the older consoles will hold them back lmao look up the base pc system requirements for most of these "nextgen" games

After "cross-gen" the actual next gen consoles (pro) will be launching i'll be waiting for those

Nowhere did I say games will actually be upscaled XBO games.

Try reading my post again.
So you say you didn't say that, but then you say that's what the word of mouth is going to be and that Phil Spencer is just preparing me for a disappointment as that's what I'll be getting.

So yes, you basically said they are going to be upscaled Xbox One games. So again, please back up your claims, and if you can't, then why do you even keep posting lies after lies? Stop pretending, you said what you said, so stop dodging the conversation and actually answer: why will Xbox Series X games only look like upscaled Xbox One games?

Let's just wait for thursday and how the games will look. On the other hand Microsoft could show the most beautiful and realistic games ever made and here would be endless topics like "See it? Xbox One holding back XSX!!!!!!!"

We all know that'll be the narrative, unless you're new to gaming?
That narrative writes itself.

What answer do you want? I'm not dodging anything, because I never made the claim that all of XSX games will be upscaled XBO games.
Maybe you should read my post again and this time, don't misinterpret it a third time.

If I would think that myself, I'd have absolutely no problem explicitly stating that

2020 Phil Spencer: XGS titles for the "next couple of years" will be cross-gen

Does this not somewhat contradict? All xbox gen. games ready on XSX, but not on Xbone?

🤔

Once you realize that Microsoft treats Xbox hardware the same as they do Surface hardware ..and 1st first titles the same as Office 365, youll start to get with the programs.

It's not about hardware and software sales, it's about subscriptions and active users.

Obviously. I said it before and I will say it again - it all lies within people's hands on how fast/slow the current-gen consoles will be abandoned. PS4/XB1 were getting cross-gen titles for 3 years, half of the generation, and I don't see it being any different this time around, especially with current economic situation due to pandemic, millions of people lost their jobs, I think they care more about getting some food than playing video games. What interests me is how much "scaled down" the XB1 games will have to be, but I expect stuff like Witcher 3 on NSW or Crysis on PS360.

He can refuse doing interviews if he has nothing new to say. That's what everyone else does.
Ah yes, that's how marketing works. That's why when a new movie releases actors only talk with 1 media outlet

He said 'Perception' and I agree. That is the danger when you blur the lines between gens so much, and when buying Halo or Forza on Xbox means a choice between versions on Xbox One, Lockhart and Series X.

i expect 90%+ of design choices made to release in that window to have roots in current gen thinking but it's a shame they didn't tried to envision 1 or 2 next gen only title

I had a friend bring this to my attention and I argued that the XSX version will be dragged down a bit being it has to run on the other hardware.

He then said "its no different from playing a game on a high end PC then playing the same game on a low/mid tier pc". I then explained why thats not true but he seems dead set that his example is bulletproof.

Is there a way someone can potentially explain it that maybe will help him understand?

I see that analogy a lot, and I think people forget the old days when PC had its own exclusives. Games built specifically for the high-end hardware of the PC couldn't be run on the consoles and were better pieces of software because of it. They pushed the future of what was possible in gaming. Years later, a new generation of consoles might be able to catch up and run a relatively crappy port like Half-Life on PS2 or something.

People are just used to seeing PC gaming as mostly console ports with higher settings ticked. And they've come to think that's all that better hardware is capable of doing. But imagine a fantasy land where there were 60M+ PC gamers out there with a 2080Ti and a massive CPU.

You wouldn't just see console-level games with sliders turned up because there'd be a market for something other than the current gen's lowest common denominator. And that's why I hate the idea of a Series S and even moreso the idea of trying to blend everything between generations. It holds back the ability to push things further with a higher baseline.

So basically every XSX game from their studios will be an upgraded XB1 game. Nothing designed around the strengths of the XSX for at least 2 years. By that time, mid gen refreshes will be getting closer.

if we making assumptions based on "tales from our asses", I can say that all xbsex games will designed around strengths of xbsex and then downgraded to xbone (loading screen added, rt removed, particles reduced etc. )

The below sticker means the game it's attached to was built for another system (ie. Xbox One) and optimised for XSX.

But they will be throwing on more than resolution and additional frames, best to wait for the 23rd to see just how different they are.

That makes the XSX a lot less exciting for me. It means they can't really create games that take full advantage of the new console. It's not simply a case of turning some visual settings down for the One version, they will have to design the games with the One as the base. Sure, you'll get much faster loading, higher resolution, etc, on the XSX, but nothing revolutionary. The upcoming consoles have MASSIVELY improved CPUs and storage speed, which make things possible that just couldn't be done on the current consoles, but I guess at least from MS first party we'll see none of that for a few years.

Seems like it you want actual next-gen games, with more than just sharper graphics, PS5 is the way to go.

it all depends on the game. Forza 8 can have some next gen physics and features in the next gen version, not too different from next gen sports games that come out on prior consoles as well. Forza Horizon 2 had different environments off-road and lacked some races and had not rainy weather in the 360 version. For each game, it will depend on how much work the developers want to do.

Halo Infinite may still have loading corridors though. We will see

Yep that is a possibility, but if I am honest I would expect most of the versions to be the same, but the Series X version being enhanced (instead of being the focus point from the ground up). Like the difference between Metro Exodus running on an old Geforce 970 (Xbox One) and Metro Exodus running in 4K with raytracing enabled, alle settings maxxed and maybe some graphical effects added/enabled (Series X).

From a developing standpoint it wouldn't make sense to create two entirely different experiences, but it is still possible that Microsoft is doing just that. If I were in Microsoft's shoes I wouldn't allocate the resources for that though, but rather treat the new games like PC games that are running on a wide range of hardware (which is what Xbox games are going be running on Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Series X and a gigantic range of PC hardware) and then tell people that holding back is bogus so people can fight over it on gaming forums and if I repeat it often enough eventually my customers will believe me.
(Not saying this is what Microsoft is doing. It is what I would do if I was Microsoft)

I'm sure it is not a problem, it can't be that hard creating a game that FULLY use ssd and a ryzen cpu that has to run on a 5400rpm hard disk and a jaguar cpu too.

Just want to point out that people assured me SeX exclusives would arrive by December 2021 at the latest. Yet here's Phil saying this will continue for even longer than that as I feared.

This is a dumbass strategy: overworking already thinly-stretched teams is not at all encouraging, it leaves obvious gaps in your marketing, and will have far-lasting consequences even when they inevitably hastily drop it.

Pssst, Xbox has no gamez so this shouldn't affect us. Especially the concerned posters who aren't buying an Xbox anyway. We've already seen devs like Capcom making games for next gen only so 2 years of only XGS games being on both won't be a big deal in the long run plus my daughter and brother can still play Halo and other games for the time being. Not a big deal in the grand scheme. If all XGS games came to the 360 from 2013 to 2015 no one would care or even remember today.

This bodes well for Hellblade 2 then, since they aren't that big to begin with.
Such a shame, one of my fav studios.

I don't have that much fondness for NT ahah, but HB was neat.
That one seems pretty far off still (built on UE5, which isn't available to partners yet).

It'll be funny to see what people say if MS shows better looking games than than Sony on the 23rd.

This.

The funny thing is..if MS's games show better on the 23rd (whether by a little or a lot), nobody is going to say "Wow thats impressive..imagine the quality in 2 years when they are developed exclusively for the Series X."
They'll just put whatever negative spin on it they can.

Meanwhile, PS5 games from Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and Bend aren't even coming until *at least* 2 or more years in.
They may show better looking games but what is the point of a gen if things like AI and game world design don't change due to being tied down to a Jaguar CPU and slow ass HDD?

I'm sure they will hold back some mundane shit like drivatars from old gen just for the PR but the truth is that the install base they have they want the gamepass subscription and game sales from hence why this is happening and games will be less ambitious in scope because of it.

I wonder if they are trying to temper expectations. Was it Greenberg on Twitter that just said he saw some "wild expectations" or something similar? Yeah right here.

That to me says there are people expecting more than we are going to get, but I haven't personally seen anything outrageous. What are we all expecting? A decent list of good games? I hope that's not "wild."

It means no lockhart

Ya'll are bitching about old news, stop making threads about it lol.

Phil seems to be unable to make up his mind, he had a experience with peyote when he traveled to a secret meeting with Ryan and MiyazakiHatesKojima MiyazakiHatesKojima out in the Nevada mountains. It seems to have warped his perception, he's trying to get series X games playable on the OG Xbox now.

Sony fans are getting more aggressive the close we get to seeing the ms lineup.

No matter how lit it will be, it'll get downplayed. I just don't get this neg energy on here from mid 40yo nerds..just in general, I mean watching from a distance same ol' douches drive by with garbage anything MS doing positive.

Xbox Series X won't have games designed for the ground up for next gen, they will all be Xbox One games with higher settings and maybe a couple more visual effects, I don't know what else you need to confirm it. It's very simple really, you ask, is there an Xbox One version of the game with the same features? If yes, then it's a game made with Xbox One first in mind.

Even Phil Spencer went on record saying how it's tough to convey "next gen" because a lot of it is resolution or framerate. He wouldn't be having troubles showing next gen games if they actually had next gen games, instead of relying on the admittedly very good spec sheet.

He actually said in a new interview that it's up to the individual studios if they want to make a game that only works on series x or if they want to make a game that works across all platforms but it's up to the teams. I'm pretty sure all of those teams are not making cross gen games. He said there is no mandate to make cross gen games.

Upscaled sounds a little harsh but yeh, Gears and others were obviously not built exclusively for Series X. They're versions with higher settings and better res/fps than XB1 obviously (but not as high as powerful PCs).

I thought this was known for a few months...I get it, and I will be there for the Series X on Day one just like I will the PS5

But Microsoft has to stop being afraid of pushing their users to transition to a new machine..thats all this looks like. I get wanting to hold on to an already installed base...but at some point you gotta take the stance of telling folks to upgrade

I mean we never got to see an Xbox One Exclusive that was fully built from the ground up of the Xbox One X and we never will..Its probably one of the most underused consoles available and for the first couple years of the XSX life it looks like it'll be the same

next week you will see a lot of games that look worse than what Sony showed
Not even close imo, you're expectations are rooted in a misconception. Not all, but a few flag ship titles will look more high res/next gen then what sony showed.

This is about the capability of the teams involved. Its about the art direction involved. it's not about supporting an older hardware set. Especially when using the unreal engine that is clearly designed to scale. You recall, unreal? They showed it running a tech demo on PS5 that you were salivating over. I don't recall seeing anything close to what was done in unreal on PS5 during the sony conference. Supporting Xbox one with gears 5 didn't stop it from being a visual feast, on either the Xbox One X, PC, or improving visuals further for the XSX.

The fact anyone is claiming things like the "games that look worse then what sony showed" while ignoring what we have already seen, just goes to show your bias.

IMO, we're going to see some ( not all) games that look above and beyond what sony showed (btw I'm basing this on what has been shown before for a few titles that sony fans dismissed as "cutscenes"). What are you basing it on? the misconception that a game can't be designed for a specific platform and ported down to older hardware? We've seen quality down ports before. I would not be surprised if sony decides to release the new GT on PS4.

Graphical fidelity on current consoles is so incredible now that it's not exactly clear what next gen is yet. The unreal 5 demo was OK, some pretty rocks. The only truly next gen thing is the hellblade 2, but that was more about amazing facial animation than graphics. Then you have things like ray tracing and hair works, these actually add a good bunch of immersion, and they can be an optional addon. Most games have shit hair. These make a bigger difference than higher poly counts and even more high res textures.

IMO I hope next gen just gives more "add-ons" and higher frame rates. The age of more polygons and higher res textures is behind us. Most of the time you are too far away from your character or whatever it is you are fighting to even notice.

The conversations in the background would be off fragmenting gamepass. If the service were to get cut off from new games for the existing user base it would be a huge PR headache. Users revolt by smearing MS and cancelling the service.

The service is built upon all MS games hitting it day one and MS is hugely invested in its success as their unique flagship offering. They can not offer a proper next gen at the same time as promoting their service ambitions.

And that's the sum and substance off it. They are leaving a door open for the future when enough users organically transition to XsX. However it's a chicken and egg scenario, need to get next gen numbers into a reasonable shape, but cannot offer a reason for next gen to take a foothold.

MS covertly cancelling Xbox One X is a sneaky way to get the series X into homes.

I just wish for PBR and subsurface scattering becoming waaay more common on the upcoming consoles, so humans actually look like humans instead of plastic mannequins, wood looks like wood, metal like metal, rock like rock, clothes like clothes and so on, it's hard for me to consider a game good looking when everything looks fake.

At the start of this gen, nearly everyone was Bitching about cross gen games and how the previous gen was holding next gen back. It would take some SERIOUS mental gymnastics to defend this position from Microsoft.

I heard people saying it was just going to be one year, so it's news to me that it's two years. Granted, I don't keep up with the tech war stuff as carefully as most.

It's not surprising to me, that it's two years. MS don't prioritize console sales, and they don't think in terms of console generations anymore. That means they aren't all that interested in designing games that can only run on the new hardware. Sure it holds some game design back, and sure it reduces the incentive to buy an XSX, but they believe the tradeoff is worth it.

Except for the part where he said each team has creative freedom to make the games just for series x or for all Xbox consoles that there wasn't any mandate to make all games for all skus. So I'm not seeing the issues if the coalition wants to make their next game a series x exclusive they can.

First party now has a choice on whether to develop for cross-gen or go next-gen only. Make up your mind.

The thing you'll see on the 23rd is we're giving our studios real creative freedom to build the games that they envision.

As you know we've added a lot of studios to the Xbox Game Studios organization over the last few years and providing them the financial stability, the creative freedom to go build the games that they want to go build, and our game creators want to build great games that can reach a large audience of players.

So I think what you hear Matt [Booty] talking about and what our creators will say is we have a vision for every game that we're building and the vision starts with the player, not the device. If a creator comes to us and says 'No, I really want to focus on next-generation' with their games, we're completely open to that and we're very supportive of that.

If a creator comes to us and says I have this vision for reaching these customers across different platforms and different generations we're completely supportive of that.

It is really about our creators having choice and allowing them to build the games that they want to build to reach the audience that they're looking for and not things that we're mandating to our creators in terms of what they have to go do.

It's not our rules for our platform it's more about creators creating the games that they want to go build looking ahead.
