[DF] Elden Ring performance: what to expect on PS5, Series X/S and PC

BANDAI NAMCO asking DF to hold off on a day one patch now seems shady as fuck. . .on BN's part not DF's. The patch notes from yesterday were as barebones as one could get, but folks (including myself) held out some hope that we would get an unblemished experience out of the gate.

. . .oh well. Maybe on PC the usual suspects can jump in and see what they can do.

Another PS5 Win that DF tries to disguise as a draw because of VRR, a feature that requires a brand new TV for $1500

And still VRR doesn't change FPS, it simply avoids tearing

Come on, they held off in the hope the xbox version would be comparable to the ps5 performance.

It's transparent as fuq.

I have to call Samsung and ask them how they sold me a brand new 2022 1500€ TV 3.5 years ago for 1200€...

are they time travelers? AM I A TIME TRAVELER?

also tell me you don't know what VRR does without telling me you don't know what VRR does lol getting rid of tearing is the less important job that VRR does. mitigating frametime stutters is the main thing

If this really is the greatest game of all time I'm going to wait until the dust settles and get which ever version is the best/least bad of the three rather than buy the wrong one and just end up complaining online until I have high blood pressure/get banned.

No game should be getting such high scores with such sub-standard performance. XSX in particular looks like it got the wrong end of a shitty stick here. 10/10s just get thrown around too easily these days it would seem.

Still, you can't argue with a consensus like this. I never got into any Souls style game, so not sure this is for me.

But if it's your bag ladies and gentlemen, enjoy! Looks like you are in for a treat!

Wow, the new "best game of all time" cant keep a stable framerate....if this 97 Metacritic game cant, why would a mediocre game/dev even bother?
Just a reminder, Ocarina of Time, which many still say is their best game of all time, ran at 20fps, 17fps on PAL consoles.

You get used to it. I refused to play Bloodborne for years because of technical issues. Then after 30 minutes or so I got used to the framerate and frame pacing issues and never really noticed them again. And it's one of the greatest games of all time IMO.
In my comment I never say that a game with typical Fromsoftware performance is not enjoyable or is an impediment.
I say that, as for all games, the little optimization and technology work should also be penalized. With Fromsoftware, this important section has been acepted and the result is that each new Fromsoftware project that is launched presents the same or even greater performance and finish defects.
We should start being more critical or history will repeat itself.

Looks like XSX version with VRR is the way to play. Think I will hold off on buying the game until I get my new tv with VRR next month (unless Sony shits the bed again there...)

Pretty obvious when all the gameplay being shown is PS5.

Sony system pretty much cementing itself as the multiplat darling. Queue the Xbox lol emoji's!

Watch the reviews and tell me if you can notice framedrops. The PS5 is 55-60 fps during the worst combat encounters. Thats way above what previous GOAT contenders used to run at in the PS1 and PS2 days when dipping to sub 20 fps was more or less normal for ambitious games.

This whole fascination with a LOCKED 60 fps is beyond me. 55 FPS already is a massive upgrade over 30 fps. Throughout the history of console gaming, most 60 fps titles didnt run at a locked 60 fps. You basically have to look at fighting games and some racing racing games like GT that had locked 60 fps framerates.

Most people reviewed this game on the PS5 where it plays way better than it wouldve at 30 fps like previous FromSoft games. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1 are considered GOAT here. Go look at how poorly Dark Souls performed in Blighttown. 15 fps at best. So whats 55 fps?

He did use the dollar sign ;)

Though the markets have the Euro lower now than they were not too long ago.

These things should be judged based on the resources and benchmarks of what is available/achievable at the time. OOT was a technical marvel when looking at the hardware it ran on. If it released today for the first time, there is absolutely no way it would get as high a score as it did, but it shouldn't be retroactively marked down due to that.

Almost every N64 game ran 20fps or below. While graphically they looked better than PSX, the framerate was much higher in PSX games on average which made N64 games like NFL Quarterback Club feel like it was in slow motion compared to NFL Gameday running at 60 on the PSX. Then there is the endless N64 fog so you could not see the endzones.

Just to add his experience with VRR in that game.

I wonder what the opinion of the "30fps hurts my eyes" crowd on VRR.
Because the framerate slideshow is there yet.

Im not getting it at launch because of this, like i said, i refuse to play anything that's below 60fps, i can live with minor dips to 55, but not 40s

It's so weird how you guys go into full console warrior mode whenever these things come up.

And yall cant even keep track of which side these digital foundry guys are on. Werent yall just complaining about the Horizon playstation bias lol

From Software needs to get it's shit together on all consoles. They've released too many games to be plagued by similar issues with minimal changes

For all their fantastic game design and art direction credentials, this sort of thing is getting pretty embarrassing for From Soft. It's like they have their fingers in their ear, obstinately choosing to ignore the criticism of their earlier titles over similar issues. This isn't some one man indie dev were talking about either. It's up to the reviewers to bring them to task over stuff like this instead of pandering to the Souls crowd.

They aren't ignoring the criticisms. They just aren't technically good enough to make a game with good performance. It's why this was said.....

"I'm pretty sure our graphics-creation staff felt that pressure more than anyone else," Miyazaki said of the Demon's Souls remake's release.

"Graphical fidelity is not something we put as the top priority," Miyazaki continued. "What we ask for on the graphics side depends on the systems and requirements of the game itself, and it takes less priority compared to the other elements of development. So this is always an area where I feel a little bit apologetic towards my graphics team because I know they work extremely hard."

I agree with most of your sentiments. I am not convinced they aren't technically good enough though. I think people can be good at something but prioritize something else at the same time if you get my drift.

I don't give a shit about framerate drops.

But the game looks like shit.

No game should get such high scores while completely failing/ignoring the tech side of things graphically. What a joke.

Other games get dinged for looking like shit. Unless you're name is FROM or Zelda :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Industry darlings.

and other games get a pass for shit game design or dogshit controls. see anything Naughty Dog releases or Red Dead 2.

so everything is in balance. From gets a pass for their tech, and Naughty Dog can still act like they actually know how to design games

This "Even with the trade-offs PS4 app on PS5 is the best way to play the game on consoles right now" can't lead to a 97MC score imo. Argh. What a shame that they can't get their shit together.

Never trust From Soft on consoles man. This is why I'm getting it for PC. Outside of Miyazaki's vision, their devs are incredibly incompetent.

PC is worse than console as of now. and no mod will be able to fix that this time I think as it's mostly shader stutters.

PS5 first then Series X for me.
Fuck. I knew I shouldnt have bought the PC version yesterday. I waited three months to preorder and still fucked it up.

Was hoping to shelve horizon until they can fix their performance issues and now i have to do the same for Elden Rings. Sigh.

maybe try a better example. Naughty Dog is the best dev in the industry. and TLOU 2 is a masterpiece on all fronts. Their last game scored high 90s despite being the most controversial game release of the decade and not being industry darlings like Zelda/FROM. scored high based on pure talent and mastery of their craft.

Me yesterday "97? Hype!" *pre-orders PS5 version*
Me today "Fuck".

I agree with the bolded, but here I question it because it looks like Miyazaki is aware of what his team can and can't do. It's like the chicken or the egg thing and which came first. Is it not their priority because they aren't technical enough? Or are they technical enough and yet never make it their priority?

To me if it's what you are saying, then why don't they ever seem to update their games weeks or months later to perform great? The Bloodborne frame pacing issues were never fixed. Maybe the Gaffers are right and it's partially the fault of reviewers since they never seem to hold the bad performance against them in reviews.

Shits hilarious, other games get trash talked in reviews for performance problems, and not advancing the medium.

Then games like Elden Ring come around, and they get praised for being more of the same souls, bare bones open world, and everybody throws a party and forgets to mention performance problems.

Well, I'm not actually saying they are good enough to be clear. I'm just not convinced they are not. I'm seeing a Uber high scoring game get roasted by a few people over the frame rate, and I am suggesting we should not assume they screwed up. They very well may have pushed as far as they could somewhere else with this being deemed an acceptable trade off.

How did you ever survive gaming growing up your entire lifetime?
