Former Crackdown 3 Team Working On Unannounced Xbox Game Since 2017

The former Crackdown 3 Team has regrouped, working on a new unannounced project which is expected to be the next CrackDown 4.

According to information found on Twitter, and as per our research through LinkedIn profiles of some directors and game designers of Xbox Studios, it appears that Xbox Game Studios is working on a new unannounced title, and there are different game directors and designers working together on this title.

The team working on the new project consists following members:

  • James Goddard (Design Director of Ryse, Crackdown 3, Buffy the Vampire working on Project Since Sept 2019)

One thing that all of the developers have in common is that they previously collaborated on Crackdown 3. They’ve regrouped once again and been working on an unannounced project for almost the last three years now, and they may be working on Crackdown 4. It would make sense, right? They were the team behind Crackdown 3 and had prior experience working on the title, which would make sense if Microsoft had decided to use the same team.

It is important to note that while Sumo (Developers behind Crackdown) was bought by Tencent for $1.27 billion in January 2022 (via PC Gamer), Microsoft still owns the IP, which means that it is highly possible that Crackdown 4 is under-development considering all the facts mentioned above.

I personally would be really into a Crackdown 4 but that would be such a strange decision after the development and reception of the last one. I thought it was great but I'm clearly in the minority there.

I kinda want crackdown 4 to be a bit more grounded in a sense. Like combine the general playstyle of crackdown 1 with gears (or halo).

And change the damn setting already. Three games in and they all feel and play nearly the same.

I just do NOT get the hate for Crackdown 3.

I had a ton of fun with it. And I played it and the first game back to back and honestly found the original game hadn't aged that well.

Crackdown 3 wasn't a big leap in any direction, but it's far more in your face fun than the first.

I don't get it.

It would have been a 78-84 game if it had released on time and without the pressure of the hype put on it by MS and its previous iterations (CD and CD2 were amazing).

But the delay and the dev change were too much for it. It’s still kind of a hidden gem but doesn’t deserve its name.

I never played Crackdown. MC is obv trash but word of mouth seems to be "you either hate it or love it" so maybe I should try it. I like weird games.

I mean, that's the only thing I can think of. There was quite a bit of bullshit around the cloud nonsense etc, and I think it got judged on what it was at some point supposed to be, rather than what it was. Kinda like the Fable story all over again. It got a lot of hate for not having the acorn and shit, so many people didn't see what a wonderful game it ended up being, although less ambitions than the lofty ideas.

Which should tell Microsoft to dial down the PR until they're close to release probably, but I still think any released product should be judged based on what it actually delivers, rather than the hype around it.

But in any case, had a blast with it. Didn't bother with the MP though.

I enjoyed the hell out of Crackdown 3. Game played really well, jumping around the map was an absolute blast. Terry Crews was Terry Crews and I hope he makes a return if they make Crackdown 4.

I don't know why the game got so much hate outside the cloud destruction bullshit in the multiplayer. The SP game was great.

When Crackdown 3 came out, I finished it and wanted more so I tried the first two games and, boy, the third one is definitely the best. If they frameboosted it to 60fps, I would play it again. So much fun (driving sucked, that is true)

It was garbage that was in development for 5+ years that was being peddled as the second coming. And what we got was Rob Schneider instead.

I had to reluctantly like this, then I remembered I didn't really like the first game at all & how some dude pretty much begged me to playthrough it with him about a decade or so ago)

I had fun with crackdown 3 solo though, but it's nothing special at all.

I'd be surprised if they are making a crackdown 4.

Yeah, I enjoy the game, it's good. But at the same time I understand the disappointment. It was kinda anticipated to be an AAA follow up, almost a reboot, of the first game so-to-speak. But it ended up more like an indie effort.

Crackdown 4, but with contemporary gangs, no scifi bullshit, no neon, and a proper sandbox with a better designed/more detailed cityscape.

Crackdown 3 was fine, but almost every change it made from Crackdown 1, much like Crackdown 2, made the game worse.

Ive said for years ms needed to hand crackdown to avalanche. They would make the best version of crackdown and already have the tech to do it. Just cause still has the best explosions of any game ive played. You could also see the influence of just cause in halo infinite

Admit it, the only reason any of us actually gave a damn about the first Crackdown was to get a taste of that sweet, sweet Halo 3 multiplayer beta.

The first and second games have aged really badly to be honest. I never got on board with 3 but I think the overall reception of the game impacted my perception of it.

There's definitely a way to make a great Crackdown game, but I don't know what that entails. Maybe lean more into the superhero powers and get ridiculous with it or perhaps a destructable sandbox not Powered by the Cloud™ that has lasting impact on the city.

I doubt its another crackdown game. 3 was just ok. I think the future setting wasn't a good choice. The pedestrians reactions and vehicle driving and damage weren't as good as the first game. Also multiplayer didn't build on gameplay from single player and that made it less enjoyable.

Im betting its a new franchise or remake of an older one.

I like the way you think. Bury Just Cause and give Crackdown to Avalanche and let them do a complete reboot of the franchise. Nice.

That’s how we approach crackdown on the in - but were surprised by a gem when there. Yeah, the sequels are wannabe‘s

Not sure I'd say indie effort, but yeah, I can understand the disappointment for some. They did build it up way too much, and what it was, for me, was just the perfect evolution of the first game. It avoided the mistakes of the 2nd, and just improved on everything, making it a very similar, but just far more enjoyable experience.

It was shorter, but for me that's a plus, games are too big and I don't have time for all that. Give me something I can finish in a weekend plus plus and I'm delighted.
