So... Returnal releases tomorrow on PC. Who's getting it?

So is the 32 Gb ram recommended spec bogus? All the maxed out 4k benchmarks I've seen run barely go over 6 Gb usage.

Maybe in the later Biome's it's start pushing the system ram usage when more things are happening on screen?

The game is running an older version of DLSS. Version 3.1.1 is working really well for me. You can download it at the link below. The file is located in Steam\steamapps\common\Returnal\Engine\Binaries\ThirdParty\NVIDIA\NGX\Win64

You sound shocked a game isnt actually using 32 frikken GB of RAM.

6700k 3060ti 16gb ram

2 diff benchmarks same settings. All maxed except RT Shadows are off, RT Reflections - Medium, 1080p DLSS Quality.

Was just curious if there were much difference between the 2.

Quick upload of a few minutes gameplay. Installed latest nvidia drivers so you can see the shader compilation step whiz by.

It also stutters in battle.. Going to wait until they fix this

Watch the lower frametime graph and you can see plenty of spikes

With RT on or off?

The game seems pretty well optimized for me.
1080p Epic settings (no RT obviously), 60fps. GPU usage in the 50-80% usage range, and cpu usage is barely anything.

3700x/32gb Ram/GTX 1080ti.

Barely any loading stutter except the odd single stutter to 59fps every so often.

I honestly think because i'm a couch gamer that plays on a 60hz tv (and therefor plays at vsynced 60fps) i rarely get much loading stutter in UE games compard to a lot of poeple. I really do think playing at unlocked framerates makes the stuttering a lot worse.

Also can i just ask, the opeining area/biome, is it supposed to be that dark?. Its so dark its hard to see lol.

Picked this up, and will be getting a refund. The stuttering is awful, especially when you go to the next area or a batch of baddies appear.

System specs:
i7-13700K
RTX 4090
32GB
980 Pro SSD
Running at 160hz on my LG 32GQ950-B.

This is NOT properly optimized. It's a shame because it does obviously look better and the overall frame-rate is super nice. But the stuttering? Jeez...

RT reflections are causing crazy stutter. I turned off RT effects and it's running so much smoother. Still the odd stutter but nothing like the stutterfest it was with RT.

Reflections yes. Shadows no

Turn RT effects off and see how much of a difference it makes.

No. You should be able to see fairly well.

Actually it runs pretty great on PC* and much better than on Switch.

*emulated on Ryujinx

The remastered version of the game runs better on ryukinx vs the original on dolphin. At least on my PC. Must have done significant optimization work on the past year.

Turn RT effects off and see how much of a difference it makes.
Thank you for the tip. However, already uninstalled it in frustration. I'm not in the mood for this. If the game gets patched down the line, I'll look into it again. In the meantime, thanks for the 5-minute rental, Steam.

just played for 2 hours...smooth as butter. a few micro stutter when an event starts but its less than a millisecond. shits smooth so far. lets hope it continues.
once again exaggerated reports. shits running so good and it feels so good to shoot with mouse an dkeyboard.

Then why were there countless threads all over the internet and especially on here port begging?

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy Sony games on PC, but generally speaking PC gamers don't hype Sony games as much as Playstation gamers... and releasing a game 2 years later is kind of a downer. By then the hype/magic is gone.

I turned up brightness and its a bit better now. Although i did just check some playthroughs on youtube and the opening biome was also very dark.

It's a dark game, especially the first biome. Some of the later biomes are brighter.

Black levels looked great when I played it on PS5 on my OLED so I had no complaints.

Blessed gaf bros for posting their impressions, I already assumed this port was a mess. Will probably be getting it at some point, maybe next month.

RT clearly isnt ready for devs and consumers to use properly. Every single game released so far with RT, has been having major issues whenever you use RT effects. I think Metro was the only one I dont remember having stutters or other issues.

Doom Eternal as well. I'm sure there are a few more but that's another on that springs to mind in terms of still being butter smooth with RT turned on.

it depends on how it's implemented really.

if its an afterthought and not being a major focus from the devs, then no it won't be good. especially when its a console port.

Ok this game is sick. HDR screenshots always look weird and washed out but the graphics are great. The lighting looks crazy at times. It stutters a bit when you go from room to room but it doesn't really bother me.

bloody hell man, this game is absolutely incredible. from the fast paced action, to graphics, to coop...simply amazing. i am in complete awe. my new favorite shit right here. running smooth as fuck too. dualsense is amazing...tough choise between dualsense and m&k.

Enjoy the greatness my man.

I sucked it up and reinstalled, and yes - removing all raytracing makes a significant difference. Now I only see the occasional micro stutter. Also, bizarrely, the game seems to lock itself to 144fps despite it knowing I have a 160fps display. A bit annoying, as I'd like that extra 10% fps.

Still, this game needs some serious RT optimization. Frame-rate is just great, but the stuttering is ridiculous, and it's a shame since it looks so much nicer with RT reflections especially.

Does turning vsync off and max frames to 165 er you said 160, but either way, not work for you?

So it seems the stutters are due to streaming issues rather than shader comp? Nice system btw, how much FPS you get when uncapped?

https://twistedvoxel.com/returnal-performance-issues-pc/

This article seems to have predicted the stuttering issues and points blame at the lack of ultra fast ssd storage and I/O components.
It stutters a bit even on PS5 when changing rooms. Havent played it on PC, so dont know if its the same kind of stutter.

This is a gem of a game. My favorite PS5 exclusive by far, and the best Sony first party exclusive in quite some time. Had way more fun with this one than Ragnarok.

I highly recomend it

Does it support any version of FSR? I'm wondering if I can get acceptable performance on an aging GTX 1060 or if I should wait to get a PS5 or upgrade my GPU (whichever comes first lol)

I think only FSR1.0, which is basically useless. it has a dynamic resolution setting and that + TAA should work well enough and look better than FSR1.0 given that UE4 has a pretty solid TAA.

it also seems to have VRS as a setting which should give you maybe 3 to 4 fps.

edit PCGamingWiki says it has XeSS... but I have not seen anyone mention that outside of them

Gets around 60fps at 1080p, medium setings, with ultra quality FSR.

It has DLSS, you can always mod it to add FSR 2.1, haven't done that myself but it's what many are doing with DLSS or FSR < 2.1 games

Just got it, played about an hour. Absolutely phenomenal optimisation!

My 1080Ti paired with a i7-7700K is running it at 4K, medium settings (textures and particles on high) at a steady 60 fps with FSR set to 'Quality'. No stutters so far, but that's probably because of no raytracing. This is as much a compliment to the game's optimisation as it is to the longevity of the 1080Ti. So far, the complaints about stuttering and poor optimisation seem to be coming from the RTX gang; but my experience without the choice of RT is smooth so far.

The benchmarking tool is also excellent. It is broken into parts which test different aspects of the visuals and give you a detailed breakdown of the performance at the end. On my rig it is heavily GPU loaded, CPU usage (as checked from MSI afterburner) is not crossing 60%.

The visuals, environments and sounds itself are fucking great. Fully recommend getting it if you have a decent rig.

PC games need to be optimized for direct storage asap. We shouldn't be seeing stuttering in nvme drives.

Already played it a lot on PS5 but I'll probably pick it up soon for PC. From what I've been reading 120fps should be possible on a 3090 so that will be worth it alone, game was already a looker on console

A 1080 Ti is basically a PS5 in terms of standard rasterization.
