So... Returnal releases tomorrow on PC. Who's getting it?

You're probably puzzled because your mind went straight to "jailbait waifu" which is a great distance away from "distractingly ugly face"

Fargo is a masterpiece and has tons, tons of things going for it. Returnal does not have that many things going for it

You have a good point about Selene's ass, I'll give you that

You barely see her face outside the few cutscenes the game has. Again, it's EXTREMELY weird that anyone would skip such a good game over such a dumb thing.

Thanks bros, I didn't know that guy messed up in the past. Will wait for other sources but so far it seems to look great. Very nice of them to take advantage of the PC by improving the visual details, I expected less from this port.

Uh oh, things aren't looking good. Apparently there are also loading stutters like in Dead Space. Frame spikes and drops when you transition to a new area.

Computerbase.de has it's performance review. Love that outlet, they tell it like it is.

As expected lots of shader cache stutter.
FSR 1.0 (no comments)

I can't believe that this game has shader cache issues. Do game developers mothers do crack while pregnant? I can't believe they are that retarded. It's the one issue they should have avoided and here it is ffs..

I'd really like to get this and play when I'm healthy enough. It'll be stunning on PC. Wish they would have crossplay so I could play with my brother on PS5, though.

While waiting for CDkeys for now, I'm wondering what is the actual download size for steam if any of you could give an update on that?

I don't mind a short stutter when loading a new area. Now, if the game stutters while actually playing anbd fighting enemies then yeah, fuck this port.

DF's and other sites tech reviews will be interesting in this one, might indicate how future not-on-PS4 ports will be.

This is baffling how devs still allow their games to launch with this issue and without precompiling option.
Sackboy Team fixed the issue in 2 weeks, hopefully we see the same thing happening here.

Edit: Seems like the game do compiles shaders the first time you launch it, Still stutters tho...

that's so fucked up... like, they really do not care do they?

At this point I'm assuming shader cache stutters are a lot more difficult to resolve than we think. Days Gone was a majestic port so I was hopeful Returnal using UE4 would be similar but it seems the dreaded stutters are back in full force.

No one makes me believe devs don't know their games has stutter problems and launch anyway. If it was simple to solve would not launch like that. Returnal is fucked.

I believe this game does feature pre compilation, but the game still stutters.
Yes, saw that article, I added a small edit to my post.

From wccftech:

As hinted in the headline, though, the actual experience is different and not in a good way. While the game compiles shaders the first time you launch it, stuttering is everpresent, despite not being picked up by the in-game metrics or benchmark. It's there not only in the thickest of combat, where it is most annoying but slightly more understandable due to all the particles flying around, but also when you're just moving throughout the environment on your own, with nothing else going on.

Well that put the final nail in the coffin containing my consideration for the double-dip.

Seriously, if your release that is specifically a PC port has #stutterstruggle in 2023 it deserves to be a commercial failure. It is time that these devs learn that PC gamers are tired of waiting for the 4-6 month post-release patch that fixes the most basic of performance issues.

Why is PC stuttering occurring so much? I recently got back into PC gaming and it feels like most new games have this issue. Is this new or an on-going issue over the last ten years (time I have been out of PC gaming)?

It's an unreal engine 4.0+ specific streaming thing, where devs need to implement actual solutions for in order to prevent it from occurring. The engine streams shaders in and on first use of the shader this is intense on the CPU and causes a visual stutter. Once streamed the shader stays in the cache until it is deleted (for instance on a new GPU driver install) after which it occurs again. It was not a thing before unreal engine 4.0 which is why it was never an issue. As for the reason why, no-one knows, a lot of devs don't seem to bother, consider it unimportant, maybe have a lack of knowledge, don't think it is worth the time and cost or whatever it is.

Shame. One of the few games you don't want stuttering on. Is this a trend with sony releases on pc? I hope they fix it soon. Does it support crossplay multiplayer?

It's a trend of almost every major PC release these days.

Yup, that 1080p internal res on ps5 is killing the texture quality here.

Not acceptable to have stutter though, do devs have any idea on how to port games to PC?

Enjoy the stutters. I mean, enjoy the game.

I don't experience stuttering in most games people complain about. I understand it's a thing, but I think proper configuration, along with system specs, can either minimize or eliminate it.

I'll update whether it stutters or not for me.

Tango Gameworks do.

HiFi Rush is also a game where timing is critical and they managed to Implement it on UE4 without shader compilation stutters with it.

that's the difference between developers that are actually passionate about their game, and devs that aren't.

I assume this port isn't done by Housemarque right?

Nope. Climax Studios. The main devs never do the port. It would be a waste of their talent.
