Digital Foundry: Resident Evil 4 Remake First Look: A Classic in the Making? PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and PC Tested

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Alex Battaglia and John Linneman have been let loose in the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo, providing an early look at the game on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and PC ahead of the game's launch later this month. Already, there's plenty to look forward too - and some technical wobbles that need to be fixed ahead of launch. Performance, visuals, modes and options are all covered, with more to come when the game is released.

- Mainly a comparison between gens (PS4 vs PS5) with other analysis later.
- PS5|SX have frame rate and resolution mode, with additional toggles on top for things like ray tracing, motion blur, DoF, chromatic aberration, higher quality hair strands and more.
- PS4 does not have hair strand, RT etc.
- DF note that the 'hair strand' in the console version has lighting issues.
- The PC version does not have the lighting issue and hair strand looks as it should
- Both John and Alex thinks the 2D hair (the normal strand off) look better (on console at least)

- PS4 has no sub surface scattering. PS5|SX|PC do.
- RT reflections in puddles are missing on PS5 but visible on PC|Xbox, in the demo.
- Texture quality on elements like walls and doors PS4 is incredibly low compared to PS5.
- PC has higher resolution textures compared to PS5|SX.
- RE4 Remake does not use RTGI with its ray tracing
- PS4 does not have shadows casted by dynamic lights, PS5|Series|PC do.
- Volumetric effects are low quality and break up a lot on PS4 compared to the rest

- On PS5|SX

- Resolution mode: Static 2160p using checker boarding (no DRS spotted)
- Chromatic Aberration is broken on PS5 so DF recommends turning it off even if you like the effect in other games
- Series X version looks notably sharper and more stable, but both have the same resolution even with the effect off. DF thinks its either a difference in TAA or reconstruction.

- Performance mode: Appears to use DRS. Similar location tested was 1440p on PS5 and 1728p on Series X.

- Performance mode on PS5|SX with RT and Strand off is extremely stable at 60
- Enabling more settings starts causing performance to drop with VRR being the saving grace.
- DF (john specifically) cites Xbox version being better because of the wider VRR range here compared to PS5

- In Resolution Mode: With RT and Hair off, it can stick within the VRR range.
- Resolution with RT and Hair falls out of the VRR range. John says it's a no-go on PS5 because of the VRR range (48hz)
- Even on Xbox the swing between 60 to big drops is notable.
- If you want to use Resolution mode, use it with RT and hair off.

- PS4 version also targets 60 but DF would have preferred a 30 FPS cap since it has wild swings in performance

- DF's recommendation:
- With VRR TV: Perf with RT on and Hair off - Resolution with all off
- Without VRR TV: Performance with Hair & RT both off

- Xbox version has a problem with dead zone and controls feel much heavier *
- The controller issues stop the Xbox version from being the best option

- PC version has expected visual advantages but can kind of look over sharpened
- No shader compilation stutter, only minor traversal stutters.

- Aside from the uneven performance and low resolution textures, DF thinks the PS4 version is a very impressive port.

* adam's note: reportedly fixed in final release

I enjoy alex's content, but like yeah dude, we get it, the pc version is better. Maybe chill with that stuff when your just comparing the ps4 and ps5 versions? Its not a stunning revelation to anyone that a pc that is triple the price of a ps5 is doing some things better

Wasn't this the case with previous two Remakes due to difference in TAA solution.
Although this was later changed in a update.

Sounds like Series X is the way to go if you have both consoles.

Seems bizarre that current gen consoles have any trouble running Resi 4 at 60 fps.

Also, these comparisons are sort of irrelevant these days, since most games receive so many patches over the course of their lifespan. Performance today may be very difference from performance next month. Digital Foundry doing their best to keep the console wars burning.

Or they are just informing the state of the game right now.

"Xbox Series X is clearly the better version of the game vs. PS5"

Outside of the "weightier" controls. I would rather have proper controls than a better looking version.

Eh.....where is that quote? I'm seeing this:

"PS5 exhibits several technical issues that detract from what is otherwise a promising port, although Series X does have issues of its own - with noticeably weightier controls that detract from what would otherwise be the clearly better version of the game versus PS5."

Yeah, that is where I found it. But if the final game has the controls patched, that is good.

im curious why they didnt show side by side comparisons of ps5 vs series x, other videos have shown series x to drop more frames than ps5! everybody knows vrr on series x has a wider range but why havent they shown the side by side fps comparison?

I tried the demo on both consoles and XSX was far better. On ps5 you would notice the framerate drops all the time unless I played on performance mode with RT off. On xbox I played with Resolution mode, RT on and Hair On and it still looked smooth at 120hz mode with VRR.

Finally
Some real analysis with actual technical inside from people who kno....oh...wait...no...it's Digital Foundry

Finally
Someone with an actual brain posts a comment with insightful thou....oh...wait...no... it's PillsOff

Yes, but that was a difference of TAA on PS4 Pro versus TAA + FXAA on Xbox which was stabler, but softer. Here, DF are saying the Xbox image is both sharper and more stable.

Not sure if it's just a demo thing and different in final so far, but it looks like a difference in reconstruction technique or base resolutions where it's reconstructing from.

This could be different in final release but let's see.

According to DF both have similar framerate, but then you go to nxgamer and it says something quite different.

Jesus christ over half of those shots don't even line up or have the same enemies on the screen etc

This guy is a joke and we know where his preference lies...lays...

All in all, if the controls are fixed I'm doing my first playthrough on xbox. Performance mode with RT. If its not then I'm pc all day.

Nver really undersytood why they do these tests on demo's that are probably 3 or 4 month old builds.
Well it gets them clicks i suppose.

I didn't need to read the thread to know which version that was supreme, i just needed to look who made the thread, and damn i was right 😂

Glad to hear my struggle PS4 is going to do decent. I was so broken when it was announced as next-gen only, then a miracle happened. Replaying RE8 now and pretending it's RE4. Time to try for the Platinum.

Alex review... I wished the sticked him exclusively to PC videos.

ive always wondered why whenever alex reviews consoles especially ps5 vs series x he always somehow manages to twist the narrative that the xbox performs and looks better even though it isnt true? i stopped watching his videos ever since this generation started they just seem doctored.

Sure the game looks sharper on XSX but they completely overlooked the big performance difference between both. NXGamer found PS5 runs at 10fps higher on average when using the resolution + RT mode. They surely didn't forget to talk about the better image quality / resolution on XSX though.

True. I know who wins when a PS guy posts it, and I know who wins when an Xbox guy posts it. I am glad they are posting it cuz I aint got time for that shit :)

Why is it taking devs so long to adopt FSR 2? What is this checkerboard nonsense.

If they dont fix these issues by release i think ill just wait a month or 2 to see if they fix it through patches.

Yep. My 7900xt PC cost about 3-4x what I paid for my ps5. While it's nicer, I don't feel I get 3-4x the image quality and frames.

exactly its why im asking why did digital foundry skip from showing side by side comparisons they simply jumped to claim vrr saved the day for xbox without any performance comparisons
They lean heavy into VRR saving the day like they think 80% of consumers can use VRR. Almost no one has VRR in the console gaming pool. It's like a blip.
