I just picked up the 1tb for £100 used, just to save £30. They're a rip off. But what can you do? The 2tb used to be around £400. My annoyance is that they are only for these consoles and I very much doubt they'll be compatible with whatever Xbox does next gen. Where as the 4tb drive I have in my PS5 can at least be moved to a PC etc in the future.

Because it's a custom low volume product based on the already quite expensive CF Express Type B tech.

It was designed to be expensive.

But inside is classic 2230 SSD, which came down with the price quite a lot. Is this the case with high-end camera CF Express memory modules as well?

Sony was criticized alot at the reveal of PS5 for using standard slot SSD. In the end their approach was way better than Xbox and more consumer friendly.

Sony wasn't criticized for using a standard SSD. Sony was criticized because they included an SSD slot that didn't work until months after the console released.

The expansion slot is basically a Type B card slot though.

But in fairness Xbox could've easily solve this problem with SSD to Type B adapter.

Casual gamers who don't know how to install an internal SSD aren't idiots. What would be idiotic is expecting people who have never opened up a PC to know how to do it. Sony made the right decision to include an M.2 drive because storage would eventually be cheaper, but it was still a more involved upgrade than most people were accustomed to.

Microsoft going with the more traditional memory card type of upgrade wasn't a bad decision, either. The bad decision was the type of SSD they chose and offloading manufacture and sale of those expansion cards to third parties who are still charging a premium for them. Microsoft should have engineered the system to offer an enclosure that accepted standard M.2 drives. Then let Seagate and whoever else sell their own enclosure with an SSD already in it. But they didn't and people are still paying $150 to $250 SSD upgrades that should cost half that much by now.

More involved? You literally pop off a plastic cover and work two philips screws.

Took me 5 minutes and the only reason it took that long is because I was too careful with it to not break the cover's clips.

It's the size of the single chip nvme that makes it so expensive.

If they would support a longer form factor it could have more chips which would cut down costs. But I think that is not possible even if the "card" would be L shaped. It would be in the way of other ports. And just make it longer is not an option.

A solution with an extension cable could work, if MS would want it. But I guess they gave up on the console. The bring out new versions of the existing, bat that's all, I guess.
They had more than enough time to come up with a solution to reduce prices. Still don't get why they don't redesign the inner of the console to use cheaper storage, as it will also be quite expensive for them to just use this small form factor SSD.

I don't recall them being criticized for the decision. I recall people rightfully predicting that prices on compatible drives would eventually drop and become more affordable. Remember, the SSD slot wasn't accessible for a good while after launch.

Being twice as expensive and single purpose (usable only with Xbox consoles) is not consumer-friendly. Convenient, perhaps, but not consumer-friendly.

I'm pretty sure you got this wrong. The xbox cards had an outrageous price of $219 for 1TB and $399 for 2TB.

Proprietary is a dealbreaker. I bought 1tb of PS5 storage for 150 almost 3 years ago. I can probably find a 2tb for this price right now.

When I had a PS3 I bought a 160gb for like 50 bucks around the launch year. MS meanwhile had this 120gb frankenstein that sold for 120 bucks and was the only way to upgrade the 360 classic.
