My wife was a victim of Xbox's confusing naming scheme

It could never be as bad as the "new" 3ds debacle back in the day. You had your 2ds, your new 2ds, the 3ds the 3ds xl, the new 3ds, the new 3ds xl. I feel like there's more than that.

If there is one thing that even xbots cannot deny is that there is no in between on MS marketing naming scheme... it's a really HIT (Windows, Office, Visual Studio, MSSQL, etc, etc)... or a absolutely mess! Strangely, when dealing with customer products, the second case is way more commom than the first.

'upcoming killer klowns trailer'

The one that came out in June?

Digging deep to get some clout, are we?

it's not that difficult

Xbox One
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X

i do agree MS need to fix their naming but c'mon One, S , X. if that confuses you then it's your own stupid fault.

Last gen = One
Current gen = Series

Not as dumb proof as 1 and 2 but they are two totally different words....

I don't get it. She bought a new Xbox so the kids can play the game?
Yeah I'm right there with you. A brand new 2024 game doesn't play on a console from 11 years ago? WOW!

So OP told her what she needed to buy and the she…did it? Why was this a Reddit post, let alone a GAF thread?

Well, it doesn't help that in the 360 days everyone referred to the OG Xbox as "The Xbox 1" There's no defending this.

For someone not too involved in videogames, no one is going to know that Series S comes after One S. Specially because the console before that was called 360 and the one before was just Xbox.

I mean compare this:

Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One (it's already messy as fuck at this point but hey...let's keep going)
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series S

to this

Playstation
Playstation 2
Playstation 3
Playstation 4
Playstation 5

Naming your product right is literally the one thing you can't miss. Ask Nintendo with the Wii and then Wii U.

I don't get it. Was the punch line supposed to be that she bought the game new on Amazon for Series S, just forgot to mention in the bad typing she picked the S?

I don't see where else there could be anything lol

Edit: If that happened, it would be a good example of their convoluted messaging.

I checked out the game section at Walmart a few weeks ago, they had one PS5 and one Pro in stock and many PS games. They were stocked to capacity with a variety of Xbox consoles underneath the surprisingly ample game section, but not a single one of them had the ability to play any of the games. It was a twilight zone moment for me.

That reminds me of when Nintendo put out the Wii U and many people thought it was just an add-on peripheral for the Wii.

As Tiago Rodrigues Tiago Rodrigues says, you can't go wrong with an iterative naming scheme. You aren't reinventing the wheel, just upgrading it.

Also, I wonder how many kids got a PS4 Pro for Christmas yesterday. They asked for a PS5 Pro, but during all of the scouring, the family member ending up accidentally getting a PS4 Pro because it was "an incredible deal".

I have never felt comfortable with the Paystation naming scheme, maybe that's why I never bought one. 3, 4, 5 - these numbers are so close together that I lost track how many times I had to look up which is which.

I mean it's not as if she could go to the store and buy the wrong one. I don't think you can easily find a One at a store.

Microsoft's naming is unfortunate but people deal with this successfully with many products like cars.

What's so hard?

Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X
Xbox Two X
Xbox Two Y
Xbox Two Zero
2 X 2 Box
2 Y 2 Box 0412
2 X 2 Box YZ
Xbox Whatever Zita
Xbox Whatever Thita
Xbox Tokyo Drift
X Might as well Box
X What are you gonna do Box
Xbox Three

It's easy...

I bought a PSX off ebay figuring it must be twice as powerful as the PS5. I can't even get it to read the disks.

Is that because the Xbox consoles didn't have a disc drive?

lol what a nonsense, i mean yeah naming isn't great and confusing to non gamer, but i see people calling their children in the supermarket to ask what kind of yogurt to buy, and taking pics to send over whatsapp, so surely any mom can ask her dear husband over the phone what to buy, and anyway you can replace it if you got the wrong model.

For us who frequent these forums yes it's easy to know the difference

But even that shit is confusing as hell to any regular Joe.

I hope this was a joke post

I was commenting on that gen of handhelds a while back and when I wrote '2DS' it made me feel dirty for some reason. It's an incredibly bad name.

The xbox naming system is rubbish for folk not in the know, there is no denying it.

But you don't buy a gift you are unsure about, costing 100s of pounds, without at least a quick 5 mins of research first. You know, just to remove the confusion and doubts.

Unless you are thick as fuck of course.

Yes.

I get it, there are different models that do different stuff, it just struck me that the Xbox section was packed to bursting with a selection of consoles, and none of them could run any of the software sold in the same section, it was just weird. I know Sony is lagging in this area too, but at least someone could walk in off the street and buy a game and system that work together, even with only 2 systems left.

Your probly right, unless your me standing in the middle of a Microcenter with money left on my debit card. I got to get something before walking out.

It is funny they have two consoles called Series S and Series X but there is only a single option under both. Doesn't "Series" imply multiple related options (configurations) within a specific series? Not saying if that will be better or even that it will be worse, just commenting on the fact that they announced two series but with only a single option under each so I am not sure why they went with "Series" as a naming convention to begin with?

All of this because Microsoft didn't want to be a number behind PlayStation. How did that go, Microsoft? About as well as Wii U went in terms of brand recognition. I have to think twice about the Xbox naming structure and I'm nerdy enough to be on GAF.

Sony, for all of their faults, know exactly what they're doing with the main console names and every single consumer and non-gaming parent knows exactly what's going on. Even with the Pro models, in a world where iPhone Pro models exist people at least roughly know what they're getting from the name alone.

"Series" is by far the worst choice for a name. I doesn't even sound like a product name, more like a class of product. S and X aren't adequate product names to follow the non-name, so it's a double failure. I have no problem believing parents are confused. What's the next one going to be called if it exists? They're trapped themselves in a corner where they either go for a funky name or suck it up and Mortal Kombat themselves back into numbers with Xbox 5. Of course now they've had the S they will have to contend with that character closeness.

I mean, yeah the Xbox naming is shit and unnecessarily confusing.
But reading that title I thought this was going to be about someone buying the wrong console, some disappointing Christmas story where the kid wanted a Series S/X and mom mistakenly bought a Xbox One or something.

Instead the wife "fell victim" because apparently she was briefly unsure about which specific console this new game was for?

All I'm getting from this is the dude is really passive in his relationship. He's the type of dude that watches his wife assemble the bike they bought their kids, but takes the time to leave a negative review because he thought it looked difficult.
