In my opinion, outside of some type of a miracle in the next few years, the answer is definitely "yes". Particularly with the news of Bend's and Bluepoint's projects being canned.

There's been some good/great games, but just no where near the level of Sony's past generations thus far.


Personally, I'd rank the generations as such:

  1. Playstation 2
  2. Playstation 4
  3. Playstation 3
  4. Playstation
  5. Playstation 5

I might have said yes before, but Astro Bot has jumped into the top 50 games of all time for me. Maybe even top 20.

Wasn't a huge fan of the PS3 era, though.

PS5, with a focus on 60fps and fast loading has been the best generation for me hands down. This applies to Xbox Series consoles as well.

IDGAF about the flops or the focus on GAAS, there has been so much worthwhile stuff to play outside of that shit.
 
Easily the Ps5 is the worse!
Ps3>ps1>ps2>ps4>ps5
what's so funny? Ps3 had the best games of all Sony consoles. come on Uncharted 2 ? God of War 3 , resistance 3, little big planet! you kids don't know good games if it would hit you in the face !

PS3, a good console overall, but it peaked at the first year (2007, which might be one of Sony's best years in spite of actual trash like Lair or Heavenly Sword), with only 2009 coming close.
2010-2013 is one of the weakest eras for WWS.
 
Yes, this may in fact be the last generation of Playstations I buy into and I've been gaming on the platform since 1995.

I thought I might be excited for Switch 2 but I'm more on the fence after the recent reveal.
 
At least with the PS3, there were some actual lessons to be learned.

This gen was just wasted without any cause or plausible reason.
 
Best hardware maybe since 1 and 2, but worst exclusive game output by far. Especially if you don't give it the benefit of cross gen stuff. PS4 Pro still does a solid job with those.
 
Bit early to say that when we're midgen?
Haven't we had like 1 slow year?
Just sounds a bit premature to call it the worst while games are still being cooked by certain developers.

I'm a little surprised by all this PS3 talk. It was the generation that brought us these exclusives:

  • Uncharted 1, 2, and 3
  • The Last of Us
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • God of War III
  • LittleBigPlanet and it's sequels
  • Resistance 1, 2 and 3
  • Killzone 2 and 3
  • inFAMOUS 1 and 2
  • Dark Souls
  • Demon's Souls
  • Journey

PS3 had like no JRPGs and not much Japanese input so I'd say that's the worst.

I like PS5 because it has a lot of resurgence of my favorite IPs: Silent Hill, Suikoden, Lunar, etc.

I'm not a big fan of most of these ansd MGS4 abd Dark Souls are not SCE?
PS3 is in a weird spot as SCE's Western output was not as good compared to PS4, while the Asian output was ANEMIC in comparison to PS2.

I'd say the PC generation is the worst coz the community can get very insufferable because of the normalized port begging and performance analysis every time.
 
PS1 >>>> PS3 >>>>>> PS2 > Playstation Classic > PS4 >>> PSX >>>>>>>> PS5

PS1 and PS3 were creative peaks

PS4 was a decline and PS5 is a barren wasteland
 
The gap after the PS/PS2 is so large that it really doesn't matter. Hard to judge the PS5 as the generation isn't over yet but it is certainly hurt by factors like cross generation titles and a lot of the library launching on other platforms while the system was still in production. As it stands, I'd say it is the least essential PlayStation platform.
 
What is the criteria or metrics you want us to use? Total gaming time? # of available games on the platform? Features and functionality of the console?

It sounds like you want to use 1st party output as the determining factor, which is fine. In that case, the older gamers here can probably remind the rest that PS didn't have a ton of 1st party support during the PS1 and PS2 eras, as Sony didn't even own that many studios at the time. Think back to the most popular games of those platforms and you'll see that most of them were 3rd party or 2nd party games.

Personally, I look at the platform as a whole. I don't only play 1st party games, and I don't only play 3rd party games. So I look at the entire catalog of games when judging whether a platform is good or not. Steam doesn't have a lot of notable exclusive games, but I don't think many people would argue that Steam is a bad platform. And that's how I look at the PS5 as well. I just know that for myself I have far more games in my PS5 backlog that I want to play than I'll ever get around to playing them all. So for me, I'm very satisfied with my PS5 purchase then gen, as I've never run of games to play on the platform.

PS5 for sure. Brand dilution. Remasters. Chasing trends and huffing so much GaaS it sent them to the ER to a tune of $400 million with Concord - but I'm glad this happened, it was the wake up call they needed. Let's see if they'll turn back to what made them great or continue enshittifying their brand.

Yes. I was holding on until some of the big studios announced their stuff, and I feel like I've seen enough now. After Ghost of Yotei and Intergalactic plus the news that Sony cancelled Bluepoint's and Bend's games, I'm firmly in the camp of yeah, this is the worst 1st party generation BY FAR.

I wouldn't say worst generation overall, because there have been some 3rd party ultra bangers, but from a 1st party standpoint, it's looking grim.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. If I hadn't skipped the two previous PS gens then this would have been a disastrous PS gen for me. The amount of exclusives I've played or games that weren't around on PS4 are abysmal. If Switch 2 actually gets games then it will beat my PS5 even if they aren't graphically impressive.
 
in my opinion i feel like sony had something to give in every generation except this one, no real new ips, too many movie style/open world games. If you have a decent pc i dont see the point in owning one.

I think once gaming handhelds get better and cheaper (maybe), theyll most likely end up replacing traditional consoles
