Do you bitter critters still think PS5 is cemented as PlayStation's worst generation?

People need to accept we entered a period of "constant" cross gen territory, the best and most impressive PS5 games will come in the later half of the generation well into the PS6 generation. The same will happen to PS6 games and so on. Thats why im not a fan of a PS6 Handheld, it could hold back what the later games could be if they need to support it too.

for CONSOLES it's the worst generation yes. and the reason why is that there was never less of a reason to actually have either of these consoles. I of course have all of them, but that's because I am a crazy hardcore gamer that just needs to have them all... but in reality, they have very little going for them.

Sony's first party output is also the worst it has ever been, no matter if you liked their recent AAA game design choices or not (I am very much in the not category), because the amount of them is just insanely low... and on top of that they are on PC 1 to 2 years later, while multiplayer focused ones and some smaller ones are multiplatform on launch (even Switch and Switch 2 now, not just PC)

There is a concerted effort to trash PS5 here on NeoGAF. Most of these negative responses came from spam bots or posters who have been paid by MS and Nintendo.

This is how this thread reads to me:

"What is your favorite color?"
"Purple"
"Impossible. You can't make purple without red so your favorite color is red"

We're already over a year in to the "later half" of this generation FYI

Nah, PS5 is great.

PS3 era was worse for my tastes. Everything else Sony has done has been excellent.
At least, in the PS3 era Sony were forced to try by making good games, this gen if it wasn't for Housemarque, Team Asobi and Arrowhead they wouldn't have anything worth playing

They get to coast this whole gen thanks to multiplatform games and soon enough will start praying for GTAVI to release ASAP because they have nothing to show for, other than lower tier sequels and GAAS trash

I don't want lame Dad of War games. I don't want lame aloy games. I don't want Disney filtered spiderman/wolverine games, I don't want any game from druckman. I don't want any more remasters. I don't want half baked GAS and cashgrabs.
agreed, this is a damning but accurate list of their content priorities

I also don't want their franchise like Last of Us becoming mainstream tv franchises filled with the same predictable, plodding "progressive" writing. I'm so tired of what these people think is challenging or brave, when it's just another form of pandering to their own in-crowd.

All it boils down to for some people who dont like the PS5 gen is Sony having less niche indies and japanese games with waifus, because its the truth. Those games didnt sell very much. Sony did what any smart company would do, which is follow the market. Once God of War, Uncharted, Spiderman and Horizon became 20M sellers, that was their sign of what gamers want the most. Even with the success of Stellar Blade reaching the highest CCU numbers on Steam, it only sold 1-2M copies on Ps5. Recent history shows the Playstation audience mostly prefer AAA games that focus on western culture. The only games outside of that competing are GAAS (another sign of what the market likes) titles like Genshin Impact.

Playstation has always been a 3rd party machine. Thats how they stole market share from Nintendo and killed Sega. It wasnt until Microsoft came into gaming that exclusives became a selling point, because they couldnt offer a Halo or Gear of War competitor on the PS3. Now that Live service games have made multiplayer so profitable, Sony has an obligation to explore having their own exclusives like they did on the PS3; especially since Microsoft has proven that no 3rd party dev is safe from being purchased by big tech. You cant wait until a problem arises to prepare for it. Better to act now then wait until another company like Ea is bought by Amazon or Tencet. The good thing now is that Sony can afford misfires like Concord or Redfall while still funding their AAA block buster games.

Now that Microsoft killed their exclusive policy by porting some of their games to Playstation, its back to the status quo of how it was during the PS2 generation; getting 3rd party deals from Asian devs, being able to play 90% games that arent made by Nintendo, and still having their own exclusive adventure games. So saying "Playstation doesnt have games" is just some new rhetoric that ignore the history of Playstation to fit a new agenda. if they've learned anything from this generation, its that the casual market love FP2 games, new console markets like China have lots of potential, and that not every games needs a 200M budget.

Grand Theft Auto VI is hitting PS5 after the whole PS4 generation was skipped over without a new mainline GTA game .

EA Sports College Football also skipped the whole PS4 generation but now releases on PS5.

Most of our favorite games have been rereleased on PS5 with enhancements or will be rereleased with enhancements.

We can play our favorite games on the go with PS Portal & now there is rumors of PS5 living on as a Portable in a few years.

Sidenote: How come no one talks about the fact that Sly (Cooper) 3 a PS2 game from 20 years ago look perfect in 4K on PS5?

How is this the worst PlayStation generation?

If you have to add all types of different *'s to come up with reasons why it's the worst generation you might be the problem.

Most of what you´re mentioning as "reached goals" or "milestones" seems more important for Sony and PlayStation as a corporation, than for us, PS users. The rereleases "milestone" is one of the most fucking delusional: Yes, it´s nice to have enhanced PS4 games, but we need more actual PS5 games...You can´t freaking say that while still more than 90% of console catalogue 5 years after launch it´s still cross gen. Do you work for Sony?

I think this gen been fine overall. It's just that 99.9% of all games are cross platform now and Sony hasn't really offered much worthwhile that I can't play elsewhere. If I only had a single system then I'd be perfectly happy with the PS5.

I still think it's their worst generation in terms of their own games though. They started out really strong but then I only used the console for about a year.

It'll probably be the best PlayStation generation to me by the time it's over. I mean it's just going to be a beat down for the second half of the gen. Plus I play most of their 2nd/3rd party deals. I love my Portal and PSVR2.

Without a fucking doubt, this is easily the worst generation, and with that means it's Sony's As well.

If you are curious what I think is the best generation, it's the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation.

Nope & even if 100% of PS5 games where playable on PS4 how does that take away someone's enjoyment of the games?

100% of PS4 games are playable on PS5 did that change PS4's enjoyability ?

Like if I can play every new PC game on my TV using streaming apps does that somehow make PC gaming worse than it was before? Because that's the mindset that we are dealing with here.

From the standpoint that every PlayStation had some excellent games, the PS5 has the least amount of exclusives that attract me. Even with that in mind, it still has plenty and has almost every modern game a gamer would want to play, outside of Nintendo exclusives.

In totality, no. The PS5 benefits from being a good console that can play most of what every platform plays now...multi-plat games. Anyone who says there is nothing to play on the console is hyper-fixating on western AAA slop, and can't stand the idea of lower production values.

There are so many good games to play on it vs the actual worst era: the PS3. Half the gen that console floundered with a price-point people hated, had to catch up and never really get there with regards to online services vs the 360, and the Cell processor just ran more multi-plat games worse. Now the PS5 offers the highest powered console on the market to play multi-plat games, and exclusives have shrunk across the board.

It's still my least favorite PlayStation generation from a software standpoint, but the fast loading makes it my favorite generation from a hardware standpoint. Too bad they made it ugly.

Nope. Their first party has been weak but their 2nd party and 3rd party offerings are some of the best in PlayStation's history. If anything, the PS3 gen was the weakest. Outside of ND and Santa Monica that gen, most of what Sony had was FPSs as they chased after Halo's success and they had the worst version of multiplats. They didn't really start hitting their stride first party wise until towards the end of that gen. I think nostalgia blinds folks here and makes them remember the PS3 and PS4 gen as far better than they actually were.

PS3 easily because... games!

There was actually a GTA on PS3 18 months after launch. PS3 came out back when game publishers actually released a game before you finished high school.

We thought so during the last thread like 2 days ago, mayne. Hasn't changed. I don't care about most of those things at the top of the OP. Tokon is the only one that has the slightest bit of interest.

This generation has so far sucked major ass, but some of you guys are into that so 🤷🏼‍♂️

However it still has a couple of years at least to end on a high note.

For me it's weird, in most ways my favourite PlayStation system especially the controller

But compared to every other PlayStation it is the weakest software wise I feel

When your best first party game as a high budget AAA cinematic action adventure specialist after almost 5 years is a low budget 3d platformer it tells you everything. But the gen isn't over yet and maybe the bald goblin or Wokerine will be game changers.

From the very beginning it's been impossible to be worse than the PS3.
But Xbox 360 sold worse than PS3…so is it possible to never talk about a single Xbox console ever again? Especially since they have all sold worse than it? Every single PlayStation has been a banger k thanks.
Even some of Nintendo's best systems wish they sold as much as PS3. It is the 6th best selling of all time. Fucking sick of the people who always come at PS3…fantastic fun system with an amazing diversity of games. /rant

There's gap in contents, nothing new here since the ps3, can't tell at this moment cause otherwise, it's a biased personal opinion. Sony probably wants the ps5 to coexist with ps6 which means there's plenty of contents coming.

There's time left, but it hasn't been great so far from my perspective. That said I don't own one, but then again I think that says it all really. The main game I'd want it for is AstroBot.

I'm not sure really, but there must be something wrong with it. It's the only PlayStation I've never bought or even played on. Which is strange after owning pretty much every mainstream console since the 90s.

Only generation where I feel complete after skipping A Main Hardware Sequel of theirs.
That shit where they only sold consoles online got to me, BIG TIME. They can fuck off even after this gen is over. I'll keep an eye on their software, though.

This console generation losed me. was really exited when it started and had 360 and PS3 flashbacks of how it would be with the added powahh en dreamed of the great games that would be coming. Got both a PS5 and XSX on launch day because i pre-ordered them as soon as i could. Instead they doubled down on everything that takes away from what made console appealing.

Can't believe some are saying PS3…. That was their best generation for in house exclusives imo. So many unique games on that system. It started rough but the second half of its life output was amazing.

The industry as a whole is absolutely terrible and neither console is worth buying anymore imo.

Even good Sony first party games are mediocre at best going as far back as the PS1 days outside of like Umjammer Lammy. And they just didn't make up for Sony having the inferior multiplats for the majority of that generation.

For me this is a weird question...on paper? Sure, tough gen. Weird output pattern from Sony themselves, lots of cancelled/whiffed projects, big gaps in launches and in genres.

BUT

I have spent more unalloyed hours of enjoyment with my PS5 than almost all other consoles, including prior PS consoles. There are a lot of convergences that contribute to this: going from all the free starter games at the beginning of the gen--I would never have played Days Gone, God of War 2019 or Persona 5 otherwise--to the unprecedented variety available due to this weird remaster renaissance we're going though, including extremely latter-day localizations of niche games. I'm playing Final Fantasy 2 one minute, then Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth the next, then MOON, then Baldur's Gate ONE, then Baldur's Gate 3 (note to self: play something other than an RPG, damn).

As someone who has always been interested in how games share DNA and influence another, this has been the console that has been the most fun to just freely time travel. Playing Saga Frontier 2 right after Final Fantasy 16 is a real holy shit moment...the legacy, however inadvertent, shines through. And there are still big, modern, popoff moments that have been great for me: I know Ragnarok is polarizing, but I found it to be the game I wish GoW 2019 had been in every way that mattered to me. Astrobot goes without saying.

The PS2 is a hard act for anyone to follow, but if it weren't for that system I might call PS5 my favorite PS console with a bullet.

Good post. It's a great general gaming hub. It's easy to live with and the game selection is great, with no aaa game daring to skip it. The console is good. The generation is good. Sony as a publisher falling short of their PS4 act doesn't bring down the whole console that much. I like it better than PS3 and PS4. PS3 was imo a dark time for game design and the PS4 was a physically and technically dull console with hellish load times. Sony's games were never my favorites but they do drop a banger every once in awhile. Always been like that.
