Only in 4 years. Can’t think of any first party output from them in the first four years that’s anywhere close in terms of quality and consistency
Almost all of those games are sequels, and one is even a remake. And most are cross gen too.

Where's all the unique next gen only IPs like past gens?

Does being a sequel or cross gen invalidate them? If so, cross off all the games on your precious Steam library

I understand that people may want new IP but it isn’t like you’re getting that from ANYONE.

All third parties and first parties are mostly relying on existing franchises

As long as those games are quality, I don’t really care

PS3 is the worst PS console and one of the worst consoles I've ever spent money on alongside the Wii.

- Didn't give a fook about the Uncharteds
- No real Japanese exclusives compared to the GOAT PS2
- Actually losing numbered, long running JPN exclusives like ridge racer 6 and Ace Combat 6 to...the X360 of all consoles.
- No-show games for the first half of its life and the few that we got were incredibly mediocre (Folklore/Heavenly sword/Genji/white knight chronicles).
- Online which was years behind Xbox live.
- Six axis joypad with no vibration (it's a feature !)

Man, fuck the PS3, absolute waste of a console compared to ALL the other PlayStations.

In comparison, I've never played so many 60fps titles in my life with almost zero loading times due to the PS5, plus, I'd take Stellar Blade, Returnal, the FF7 remakes, BM Wukong, Des remake, FF16, Kena and Phantom blade 0 (coming soon hopefully) than whatever tripe the PS3 had.
In fact the only games I enjoyed on the PS3 were GOW3 and TLOU.

Having said that, Sony needs to wake the fuck up after all their latest blunders (Concord, cancellations of other games due to Concord, spending 4+ years on said canned projects, Bungie acquisition which has shown fuck and all so far etc etc).

Personally :
PS2=PS1 > PS4 > PS5 > PS3
And add more fuel to the flame:

-Lackluster third-party support, with few games that fully use the hardware.
-No backward compatibility with PS2 games.
-Very pain in the ass architecture to develop games for, with many said third-party games running worse compared to their Xbox 360 counterparts (glaring example: Bayonetta and all Bethesda games).
-Hardly any Japanese exclusives, with many companies like Capcom and Square Enix who used to develop exclusives for the PlayStation; due to high costs and the much easier development tools and growing popularity of the Xbox 360, they formally shifted to releasing previous PlayStation exclusives like Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy to other platforms. Don't even get me of the Tales Of Franchise where the PS3 Version of Tales of Vesperia wasn't released outside Japan until the Remastered version was released in 2019.
-Unstable framerate on multiple games, including first-party games like Ratchet and Clank and Infamous, where many of the games run below 30fps and/or unstable 60fps.

Regarding software, every iteration is worse than the previous one. But given that PS5 runs the entire software library from PS4, and PS2 runs the entire library from PS1, I'd put them above their predecessors. So, PS2>PS1>PS3>PS5>PS4.

Gt7, FW and Ragnarok should be considered under PS4 generation. The rest feels pretty weak for being 4 years in. I still have hope for the next 3 years, but so far it has been lackluster in my opinion

I can't say I haven't enjoyed my PS5, because there have been quite a few good next Gen games, but the PS5, and this whole generation in general, has seen a lot of wasted potential and a ridiculously slow output of new games, whether first or third party. I am still buying PS4 games fairly regularly due to how few new releases this gen has seen and that's not something that has happened with prior generations.

I also want to point out that this is not exclusive to Sony. Microsoft's output has been severely lacking as well this generation. This generation saw a perfect storm of

(1) The pandemic delaying everything,
(2) Post-pandemic inflation making everything expensive,
(3) Many game devs ignoring their paying audiences to placate extremists on Twitter who are way smaller in numbers and)or don't actually buy games,
(4) Live service/GAAS/"Our portfolio need a Fortnite" corporate greed and obsession,
(5) Devs using engines they don't understand, i.e. UE5, or minor graphical enhancements they don't understand, i.e. ray tracing, that have resulted in disasterous framerate and resolutions and numerous bug and glitches.

The hardware we have is darn good for $500 plug and play consoles, but due to all of the above, we just can't get enough high quality, regular releases that arrive fully finished.

Probably because if PS5 did not exist you could still get that experience on a PS4.
If PS5 did not exist yet you would be playing Rise of the Ronin on PS4. Poor argument.
Because cross-gen games are generally designed to run on older hardware (PS4, in this case), which limits how much they exploit the PS5's capabilities.
That has nothing to do with them being part of the overall output of the generation.

For me? Yes, I would say it's definitely a weaker gen. I used to buy 3rd party games on my consoles back in the day, but since building a PC I mostly get third parties there now. For me it's probably something like:

PS2 > PS1 > PS4 > PS3 > PS5

I have barely touched my PS5 this gen aside from playing stuff like Stellar Blade and Rise of Ronin and some other multiplayer games with friends.

PS5 has definitely underperformed compared to previous gens. The emphasis on GAAS, REMASTERS and third party timed exclusives over the brilliant SP AAA bangers they used to make has been the issue. Perhaps they are waking up slowly with the cancellation of many of the live service shite no one asked for. They need to move the HQ back to Japan as well to refocus the brand.

I would not count it as a Switch exclusive game but it would still be a Nintendo exclusive (for now).

???

So how is that different from any cross gen Sony games?

Fact remains, these games sold best on current gen consoles, pushed sales, and looked/performed significantly better than their last gen versions

Yes. Between the shift to Live service, the increasing wokeness, the embarrassment of Concord, the slow pace of SP games, and the increasing "corporate" feel of their leadership, I've lost confidence in them. I liked them during the PS3 and PS4 era, but they lost me this gen.

People won't change their stance on GAAS so whatever, but Sony focusing on remasters and third-party timed exclusives over their AAA SP games...? In what fucking world?

I play on PC and bought the PS5 for a few exclusives. I think I've played about 5 games in 4 years.

Looking ahead, I may wind up playing less than 10 games this whole generation...

But they are changing their GAAS view. Sony has cancelled around 8 (give or take) of their new GAAS games the past year or two. They released H2, released and retracted Concord, got a handful in the hopper and the rest gone. The Sony exec even said they are going to reevaluate their GAAS games. And just this past week two more got booted.

Easily ... Sony GAAS push and the insane development times imploded first party productivity compared to previous gens, there is zero inovation and too much DEI crapping up everything.

My Plastation is for the first time a 3rd party machine.

if I’m judging by Sony games, I’m a bit meh on this generation with Returnal being easily their best new IP. Other stuff was just more of the same and getting a bit tired of it. Hardware is great though.

I'm talking about the people here, not Sony.

I actually enjoy my PS5(and now Pro) for the most part save for some game issues that I hadn't experienced much in prior generations. This gen is the worst by far for most companies in my humble opinion, and the industry could tank because of it, in fact I think it will and hard if it doesn't course correct. But several factors have to be there including customers actually supporting quality content. But I digress, I think this is Sony's worst gen as of yet simply for decisions made, my complete disdain for artistic choices and despite a few good second party titles and first, most of their hyped up stuff is still just derivative of PS3 era game design, mainly Ubisoft and Last of Uncharted stuff.

Thankfully there are other things to play from third party and indie publishers and I can afford other systems. Everything I've been playing lately doesn't even begin to push the hardware. But access to prior generation's games, solid party features and faster loading make it a decent if not good system. If they lacked third party support it'd be very different.

well said bro. Playstation used to be so cool and felt like they really had their finger on the pulse of gaming. Now they're just a bunch of corporate lames chasing trends.

Also theyre pathetically un-japanese now, from their leadership to their performance in Japan to their acts like closing down Japan Studio. Total disgrace of a division.

Why the PS5 is the worst PlayStation home console yet:

- Games being ported to PC (there is no longer the added value of exclusive games for the brand)

- Many crossgen games that do not take full advantage of the hardware's potential

- Several games being canceled

- A lot of forced woke shit in games

- Price increases (both on the console and online service)

- Temporary exclusives (which everyone knows are temporary) that do not add any value to the console's library in the end, unless you have FOMO syndrome

I think there are more negative points, but I believe these are the worst.

How the fuck are people putting PS3 as the worst for 1st Party output? Did you even play in that gen? It was one of the best when things started going.

PS2 > PS3/PS4 > PS1 >>>>>>> PS5

95% of the anti-PS3 talk I'm reading in this thread is some of the dumbest shit I've ever read on GAF
Revisionist history and other bullshit not even worth responding to

2007 was indeed the best year of the console and the second half of the console sucked.

Revisionist history would be putting it on a pedestal

It was the largest failure of any Sony console, got rid of BC, was more expensive, a year later, had worse third party ports, had an inferior online infrastructure that was slow to adapt, was outsold by its primary competitor for most of the gen, and didn’t have any noteworthy exclusives until the latter half

I'm a little surprised by all this PS3 talk. It was the generation that brought us these exclusives:

  • Uncharted 1, 2, and 3
  • The Last of Us
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • God of War III
  • LittleBigPlanet and it's sequels
  • Resistance 1, 2 and 3
  • Killzone 2 and 3
  • inFAMOUS 1 and 2
  • Dark Souls
  • Demon's Souls
  • Journey
  • Ni No Kuni
Where's Tokyo Jungle, Fat Princess, Rain, Puppeteer, Echochrome, PAIN, Siren, 3d Dot Game Heroes, Folklore, and EA Tetris?

Anyone who says this unironically either is too young to have lived through the PS3 generation or has the most rose-tinted glasses ever.

The PS3 gen was an absolute disaster. For years, multiplatform games performed and looked worse on the PS3 vs. 360, and there were even some later in the system's life that had issues, like Red Dead Redemption. There were also games like Mass Effect or Dead Rising that either took a long time to come to PS3 or never came at all. A LOT of the first party exclusives that came out during the time were also ass. Killzone and Resistance were mediocre at best. Infamous was boring as fuck. God of War was already stale. Gran Turismo used fucking PS2 models and was way behind Forza Motorsport of the time.

I'm a little surprised by all this PS3 talk. It was the generation that brought us these exclusives:

  • Uncharted 1, 2, and 3
  • The Last of Us
  • Metal Gear Solid 4

  • Killzone 2 and 3
  • inFAMOUS 1 and 2
  • Dark Souls
  • Demon's Souls
  • Journey
  • Ni No Kuni
  • Good, though 1 was ROUGH before the remaster on PS4 cleaned it up.
  • Good
  • I literally bought the 80 GB MGS4 bundle when it came out just to play MGS4. 100% worth it.
  • Series was already stale and was behind DMC and Ninja Gaiden.
  • Ass
  • Overrated, though 3 is the best of them.
  • Terrible. Even Halo 4 was better than either of them
  • Completely generic.
  • Not an exclusive
  • Awesome
  • Cool, but this would be called a "perfect game pass game" if were released today
  • Good.
PS3 had 3rd party games that ran at 30fps that were 60fps on Xbox 360.

For that reason, I say ps3 was the worst.
The only one I can think of is Bayonetta.
