I might have said yes before, but Astro Bot has jumped into the top 50 games of all time for me. Maybe even top 20.

Wasn’t a huge fan of the PS3 era, though.
PS5 is easily the worst for me despite enjoying it.

PS3 is underrated IMO. Uncharted 1-3, TLOU, Killzone 1-3, Resistance 1-3, Puppeteer, Infamous, God of War 3, Motorstorm 1-3, Journey, Littlebigplanet 1-2, GT 5-6, Demon Souls, Ratchet and Clank (like 4 of them I believe?), Starhawk, Tokyo Jungle, and that's all on top of the great HD collections we got (which were actually welcome back then), and great 3rd party games (many of which were exclusively on PS at the time) like MGS4, MAG, Folklore, Ridge Racer 7, Ni No Kuni, the Yakuza games, Wangan Midnight, Initial D Extreme Stage, etc. I'm missing lots of others as well.

Sony was putting out smaller games/experimental games like Puppeteer, and Tokyo Jungle. They had free multiplayer still with a fantastic version of PS+ where it was actually exciting to see what you got every month.

PS4 was great (and gave me some of my favorite games), but also the start of the downfall IMO. Ultimately PS5 is just a continuation of the last half of PS4.

Overall it's PS2 > PS3 > PS1 = PS4 > PS5.

A better start to any PlayStation generation since the PS2.

First party on ps5 way better then ps2, but ps2 had huge third party titles

The console itself is awesome, love the fast SSD and ubiquity of 60 fps, dual sense is a huge upgrade for the controller

Love it

Ps2 had mostly 60 fps games too. And srsly if you exclude remakes and crossgen there is basically nothing left on ps5.

Do you know that ps2 and ps3 still get exclusives after the next console came out. This generation croasgen was bigger than ever and it sucks.

I gauge it by my use of the console.
Bought one 3 years into its life cycle and played if for maybe 2 weeks.
Do not care for their 1st party output (have not completed any of their games) and I'm ok I am not the target audience anymore.

This whole malaise of generations/hardware the industry shifted to made it easy not to have one.
The PS4 was when my interest started to fall off. I understand the economics of it. You want easier architecture for developers to maximize game output but as a PC and console player it made things feel stale.

PS2 >> PS1 > PS3 >>>> PS4 >>>>>>PS5

PS3’s accomplishments are fantastic, the depth of the exclusives and Sony over the last couple of generations have proven that exclusive depth makes the world go. Dominating the Xbox 360 later in that generation was a huge accomplishment, look at the last few exclusives GT6, God of War 3, Last of Us etc. Sony was committed to gaming. The beauty of the PS3 is in the eye of the beholder so there’s no way it’s the worst.

How would you rank the generations thus far?

LOL.

James cant rank them because if he does he'll make some systems look bad if they are at the bottom.

The console itself is great, and I'd say this is not a problem limited to Sony. This generation sucks, but for all systems.

Console itself is very good, silent enough (compared to hilarious noise levels of PS4), load times are very good, download speeds are very good, most games are 60fps etc.

But Sony itself and their output? They are like Joe Biden durning his presidency: completely lost.

I hope they will recover...

I've long been partial to the 7th generation of consoles in general. We got so many new IPs and 3-4 games per IP. It was really something. If I had to rate the PlayStation systems I'd probably go as follows:

PS3
PS1
PS4
PS2
PS5

I know I'm in the minority in how I feel about the PS2 era. It's certainly not bad by any means. But I think Sony's first party stuff in the PS4 era is great. My PS5 is basically a PS4 Pro Pro.

What?

PS2 > PS5 > PS1 > PS4 > PS3

That’s my ranking so far. PS3 was their worst generation due to hardware and slow start, but it also allowed their first party to grow so it’s not like it was a bad gen, definitely the least successful PlayStation by far though with lots of growing pains

PS5 didn't reach meme leves of "has no games" yet, it has not many First Party games, but it keeps coasting thanks to multiplats

First 3 years of PS3 ('06-'07-'08) were the worst of the worst and nothing comes close to it, if it wasn't for the first Uncharted, Resistance and MGS4 that console didn't have anything worth it and all multiplats looked and played better on X360

i'm thinking that any generation of any console that involves the possibility of getting a single release from more than one of its major developers has to be the worst one...

PS3 is the worst PS console and one of the worst consoles I've ever spent money on alongside the Wii.

- Didn't give a fook about the Uncharteds
- No real Japanese exclusives compared to the GOAT PS2
- Actually losing numbered, long running JPN exclusives like ridge racer 6 and Ace Combat 6 to...the X360 of all consoles.
- No-show games for the first half of its life and the few that we got were incredibly mediocre (Folklore/Heavenly sword/Genji/white knight chronicles).
- Online which was years behind Xbox live.
- Six axis joypad with no vibration (it's a feature !)

Man, fuck the PS3, absolute waste of a console compared to ALL the other PlayStations.

In comparison, I've never played so many 60fps titles in my life with almost zero loading times due to the PS5, plus, I'd take Stellar Blade, Returnal, the FF7 remakes, BM Wukong, Des remake, FF16, Kena and Phantom blade 0 (coming soon hopefully) than whatever tripe the PS3 had.
In fact the only games I enjoyed on the PS3 were MGS4 (reason why i got the console), GOW3 and TLOU.

Having said that, Sony needs to wake the fuck up after all their latest blunders (Concord, cancellations of other games due to Concord, spending 4+ years on said canned projects, Bungie acquisition which has shown fuck and all so far etc etc).

Personally :
PS1=PS2 > PS4 > PS5 > PS3

I don't think it has any premium new experiences to offer like its predecessors but maybe it can squeeze a few out before it's replaced by the next iteration.

PS3!? No WAY. We got THREE Uncharted games. Wipeout HD. 2 Killzone games. Infamous games. GTA 4 AND 5. The Resistance games. GT5 and GT6. Worse than PS5 !? GTFO if here. I’m forgetting more excellent PS3 games than PS5 has released total..

PS5 , undoubtedly, is the worse PlayStation generation. You can argue it’s still “good enough”…. if you’re of that opinion… but there is still no PlayStation generation that was worse. PSP was cooler.

PS2 > PS3 > PS1 > PS4 > PS5

Yet you’re hyped for a pretty lazy and uninspired mid gen refresh handheld …
Not hyped but you know Nintendo is gonna bring it with the games. They were smart to bow out of the HD monster race. They’re pummeling the competition with PS2 graphics.

Look at Xbox and PlayStation right now. They’re pathetic. 100 year dev cycles, chasing diminishing returns graphics with $700 hardware.

In terms of exclusive output, yes the PS5 is the worst. But the quality is up there with the very best and the device and controller is miles ahead of anything before its time imho. I mean, AstroBot is just pure gaming that is rare to find these days.

It's very easy to say every other generation was better when looking in hindsight with rose-tinted glasses on when you were a kid playing a PS2, but there have been colossal fuck ups and poor output across every gen to some degree. I feel like only adults in the PS1/PS2 days can draw meaningful conclusions about what's truly good/bad looking bad. If I had to pick, I'd PS3 but only for the slow start, it took about 3-4 years for the good stuff to come out.

But PS5 has had them since the very beginning, just not very many.

In terms of first party, yes. It's the worst. I'm interested in basically zero Sony first party games that are still coming out.

-Ghost of Yotei? Pass.

-Death Stranding 2? Cautiously optimistic, but no longer first party anyway since Sony no longer owns the IP. Koji-Pro now owns the IP outright.

-Wolverine? Spiderman 2 was absolute cringe, so pass.

-'Marathon remake'? Looks nothing like Marathon and Bungie is now ass. Pass.

-That one Concords meets Overwatch looking GAAS title whose name I forget? Lmao hard pass.

Can't even think of anything else.

Call me when we get close. How many PS5 years will we need ? 14?

Spider-Man Miles Morales
Demons Souls
Returnal
Ratchet
GT7
Horizon FW
God of War Ragnarok
Spider-Man 2
Helldivers 2
Stellar Blade
Astro Bot

Only in 4 years. Can’t think of any first party output from them in the first four years that’s anywhere close in terms of quality and consistency

Comparing year 5 of PS3, PS4 and PS5 so far (PS1 had a different lifecycle and I'm too lazy to do PS2 as well):

PlayStation 3:
-LittleBigPlanet 2 (Media Molecule, January 21, 2011)
-Killzone 3 (Guerilla Games, February 25, 2011)
-MLB 11: The Show (San Diego Srudio, March 8, 2011)
-PlayStation Move Heroes (Foster City Studio, March 22, 2011) PS Move
-MotorStorm: Apocalypse (Evolution Studios, March 31, 2011)
-SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy SEALs (Zipper Interactive, April 19, 2011)
-Infamous 2 (Foster City Studio, June 7, 2011)
-Bleach: Soul Ignition (Japan Studio, June 23, 2011)
-Resistance 3 (Foster City Studio, September 6, 2011)
-RA.ONE: The Game (Studio Liverpool, October 5, 2011)
-Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (Foster City Studio, October 18, 2011)
-DanceStar Party (London Studio, October 21, 2011) PS Move
-Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Naughty Dog, November 1, 2011)
-Carnival Island (Santa Monica Studio, November 15, 2011) PS Move
-Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest (San Diego Studio, November 15, 2011) PS Move
-EyePet & Friends (London Studio, November 18, 2011) PS Move
-Move Fitness (Studio Liverpool, November 25, 2011) PS Move
-Start the Party! Save the World (Studio Liverpool, November 25, 2011) PS Move

PlayStation 4:
-The Inpatient (XDEV Studio Europe, January 24, 2018) PSVR
-Shadow of the Colossus (Japan Studio, February 8, 2018)
-Bravo Team (XDEV Studio Europe, March 7, 2018) PSVR
-MLB The Show 18 (San Diego Studio, March 27, 2018)
-God of War (Santa Monica Studio, April 20, 2018)
-Detroit: Become Human (XDEV Studio Europe, May 25, 2018)
-Track Lab (XDEV Studio Europe, August 22, 2018) PSVR
-Firewall: Zero Hour (San Mateo Studio, August 28, 2018) PSVR
-Marvel's Spider-Man (San Mateo Studio, September 7, 2018)
-Astro Bot Rescue Mission (Japan Studio, October 4, 2018) PSVR
-Déraciné (Japan Studio, November 8, 2018) PSVR
-Chimparty (XDEV Studio Europe November 14, 2018)
-Frantics (XDEV Studio Europe, November 14, 2018)
-Knowledge is Power: Decades (XDEV Studio Europe, November 14, 2018)

PlayStation 5:
-Convallaria (XDEV Japan, 2025)
-Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (XDEV Japan, 2025)
-Ghost of Yōtei (Sucker Punch Productions, 2025)
-Lost Soul Aside (XDEV Japan, 2025)
-MLB The Show 25 (San Diego Studio, 2025)

We just need a good SOP with a few announcements for new games this year and it's enough to beat the shovelware-filled 2011 for PS3, where even most of the big sequels couldn't make it up as they were generally considered disappointing (Killzone 3, Motorstorm: Apocalypse, SOCOM 4 and Uncharted 3).
PS4 in 2018 could beat it due to having two actual GOATs (God of War and Astro Bot Rescue Mission), but PS5 in 2025 still has chances to be better overall.

Subjective thread!!

From an exclusive/1st party perspective it's very hard for me to choose the best as that opinion changes so often for me as I loved PS1-4 but the worst PlayStation generation for games I like personally is PS5 by a long way.

The console itself is great and the Pro is a fantastic machine but the severe lack of games from Sony particularly is a shambles compared to previous generations especially with the amount of studios they have, It's all down to mismanagement and poor decisions chasing gaas and games spending years in development to be canned.

Alienating their core player base chasing dreams rather than being sure and steady but remaining profitable doesn't help.
